It's clear that May doesn't give a rats biscuit about what the people actually want to eat once they smelled what was on the table. She simply wants Brexit. As a Norwegian, I hope that you will at the very remain in the EEA and Schengen, and become part of EFTA (truly the cool European countries club).
@@ceo8677 I think most people in the UK have since changed their thoughts on brexit. It was barely a win, and that was with most of the public being quite blatantly lied to about what it would actually be like
@@raeanna33 So Brexit is the UK dissolving their charter with the EU. So the EU or European Union is kind of like a pact or a treaty which extends rights across borders from one country to another. Once you're in Europe, you can basically just drive across the continent as long as you're going from EU country to EU country and even driving between Sweden and Norway is pretty painless since those two countries have a unique relationship. The thing is the EU also governs defense and trade agreements. The UK imports a LOT of goods. From food stuffs to automobiles to friggin toaster ovens and the trade deal they have as part of the EU means that all those goods travel into the UK quickly without having to go through a protracted customs inspection. Basically when you think of the EU, consider if the individual states in the US were even MORE individualized and the federal government instead of being a centralized body was actually a treaty and contract of cooperation. So Minnesota would have a trade and free travel agreement with Wisconsin that was enforced by the trade and cooperation treaty instead of being different states in the same country. So the end effect is the same (you drive across the bong bridge if you're traveling from Duluth to Superior) but instead what is supporting that free travel and commerce is different. The EU countries also share a common currency (the Euro) except for certain members like the UK and Sweden who retained their own currencies the Pound and the Krone respectively. OK so lets then move back to the vote that changed everything. The UK decided to hold a vote where the people would decide if they wanted the UK to leave the EU. The government didn't think the people would be stupid enough to vote to leave and held an election instead of doing their FRIGGIN JOBS. By that I mean that parliament could have voted down movements to leave the EU but having the people vote it down sped up matters for them though and they were lazy and decided to shoot down those individuals who btw were funded by foreign countries in part but meh. The parliament thought they could just let the people vote but having a vote meant that there was a period of campaign and the probrexit people did a LOT of campaigning. Typically that campaign was full of half truths and misleading information but that's sort of the way of things these days. And without anybody calling out the probrexit side on their BS they got away with a lot of it. Next step was the vote. Never underestimate the idiocy of the masses. A person is a wonderful intelligent creature but people are panicky and prone to making terrible decisions when in a herd mentality. Individual voters voted FOR the exit thinking it would be ok because their neighbors would vote to stay. So you had a situation where many people who voted for it wanted to have a do over but YOU DON'T GET A DO OVER, IT'S AN ELECTION NOT A GAME! sorry.. So the people voted to leave the EU and this causes a LOT of problems, not least of which is the current peace in Ireland. Now the current tenuous peace is mostly only held together because there is no border between Ireland and Northern Ireland thanks to BOTH being in the EU. (again back to those borders being eliminated) You see, in Ireland (the isle not the country) because part of it is a member of the UK and another part is a sovereign nation they would have a border however with the UK being in the EU then that means that the two nations who are one common people (Norther Irish don't see themselves as anything other than Irish after all) could coexist peacefully. Now with a border we may return to the bloodshed that you're likely only somewhat familiar with because of a song by the Cranberries, Zombies. You know that part where she's talking about with their tanks and their bombs and their guns. She's talking about Ireland where a terrorist organization (yes a terrorist organization lets get real here) called the IRA killed countless people because of nationalism. You know that old chestnut that got the Nazis rolling and is our own current President's position? Yeah, nationalism... Which was actually also one of the factors in the Brexit election. So in short, Brexit is the British people's response to their parliament not doing their job and telling a bunch of crazy nationalists funded by foreign countries to go stuff it and thus allowing STUPID people to vote to basically ruin their own nation. The only consolation is that after laughing at us for voting in Trump, they screwed themselves over even MORE because this doesn't even have checks and balances mitigating the damage and will likely lead to disaster on a monumental scale that they'll never recover from. Lets be honest, they don't have the resources which was the whole motivation for the British Empire in the first place and without some kind of trade deal to keep the resources keeping the tiny island nation afloat (see what I did there?) they will have uncontrolled inflation and even potentially a flare up in hostilities between Northern Ireland and Ireland again which will be bloody. So Brexit in short is Parliament not doing their job and getting screwed over because of it and dooming the entire nation into turmoil and because they assumed that their people would somehow be smart enough to not fall for nationalists funded by foreign powers but in history people have NEVER been smart enough to not fall for that and us Americans can at least take solace that now WE'RE not the stupidest nation on Earth. No our allies across the "pond" are indeed the biggest morons on the planet.
Darren Skjoelsvold wow. Thank you for summarizing that up for me. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know a lot about the EU beforehand. I have, of course, heard about Ireland and Northern Ireland, but did not understand the consequences of Brexit for them. Of course, we see this happening once again. Nationalism at its absolute worst. The US is, in my opinion, on the brink of a civil war, but after heading your explanation, it definitely sounds worse off “across the pond.” So. Parliament. Are they basically bought off like Congress, turning the nation into a corporatocracy? I mean, I just can’t wrap my head around the notion of leaving the EU. Did they just not think about the consequences? Obviously the masses didn’t. We all know very well that the majority of the world’s population are incapable of critically thinking and analyzing, so I get that. I just still don’t quite understand parliament’s motivation. Was it just because it was a promise Theresa May made? Similarly to Donald Trump’s wall, where he is only trying to do it because it was a campaign promise?

From my understanding, there can only be a few ways this ends. 1) The EU agrees to extend Article 50 in order for the UK to make up its mind 2) The EU declines to extend Article 50 in one of 2 scenarios can occur. a) The UK revokes Article 50, which goes against the result of the referendum. b) The UK leaves with a no deal Brexit, which goes against the wishes of Parliament.
As a British citizen , I know this will now last decades ,the next elections will be run on this( leave or stay) and the fighting will continue .The betrayal of the leave voters will lead to a massive rise to the right and who can blame them for being upset and kicking back.

She lost the opportunity to force them to choose between her Deal and No deal Brexit, sure, but she now has standing to force them to choose between her Deal and No Brexit, instead. Since they voted against Leaving with or without a deal, she can argue they effectively voted against Leaving at all.
@@KerbalFacile not really. Parement is currently split 5 different ways, with noone in a majority. On top of that the majority coalition only have 13 more votes then the other coalition of party. That easy to sway. Another thing is that May said she would step down if her party lost majority in the last election. She didn't. Which means that the second party have a lovely scapegoat to blame nothing happening with Brexit. Of course they are against Brexit at all, and want to stay. Which means more people are wanting to stay. Which makes those 13 seats from earlier easier to sway. I have no doubt that the 4 vote differences is cause by people from the majority switching to the minority. So when she says it will be no Brexit versus her deal, it the minority won that round.
Seriously, what else can she do? MPs do not want her deal, they do not want no deal - and as the EU is not going to give them a different deal, they are practically saying that they do not want Brexit, but at the same time there is no majority and no time for another referendum, which would be questionable anyway, as it can be very well argued that this would be undemocratic. The MPs are all just in for their own olitical gains, May might be the only one in there who actually does things in the interest of the UK and not just in the interest of her own party/career...
What else do you want her to do? This is the only deal the EU is giving. The parliament said no to both this deal and no deal. At this point if I were her id just resign cause the parliament doesnt want any of this brexit act to actually end it seems.

Why are they screaming, talking and acting as if they were in a pub in the parliament? Is this the norm in the uk parliament that the speaker has to remind people to shut up when people are speaking. It looks like a class of special needs students and a new teacher that doesn't have any control over the class.
Actually, British Parliament is a lot more civilised than most other countries with similar parliamentary system - you should watch the speaker of Indian Parliament the poor man/lady has absolutely no control whatsoever - it's like a helpless teacher trying to control some out of control retarded children.
Mindblowing. The UK becomes less democratic and more authoritarian by the day. My wife and her friends left a corrupt non democratic country to come to the UK. Only to see the UK become more and more corrupt and less democratic, leading to a government that blatantly ignores the largest democratic vote in British history. Not to mention going into a negotiation set up to lose. The only upside here is that because huge numbers of people now have no representation in parliament it seems inevitable that the 2 party chokehold over British politics is probably over. But how much more damage can they do along the way?. Already have companies I work with pulling investment plans after re engaging with the UK because they thought Britain would leave and be more business friendly. Some of us have spent 10 years restructuring against Euro and EU political risk. Signs are that the EU is on the knife edge of recession as it. With predominently non Euro countries bucking that trend. This was a terrible move for Britain. It is doing huge reputational damage at a time when our formerly respected institutions and authorities are being condemned aroumd the world. Our legal system, our Broadcaster, the BBC, our Government are all losing enormous credibility and it is will probably do more to damage the UK than anything Brexit could have achieved. 18 months of discussion with investment agencies in the UK, utterly wasted unless some miracle happens and Britain gets some leadership and simply gets out.
And here we are, 1 year and 3 months later and still no idea where we are headed! Perhaps you could revisit this and explain what, apart from now having an internal customs boundary, has actually changed.

The truth is that there might be no other options left for the UK than no-deal or revoking art 50. All other options need a unanimous agreement from the EU27. From those reps who are pissed af that the UK have just wasted 2 years of EU negotiators time for nothing. It is in no way sure that all EU27 support any extension. It needs a unanimous agreement. The EU has all the cards and UK got nothing. Even if UK asks extension for another referendum, nobody can guarantee that it changes anything which would just be further waste of everyones time.
A referendum offering the agreed withdrawal agreement and Remain is likely an acceptable reason for an extension. And really the most practical way forward. But none of this was every practical to begin with so what do I know...
Its not like UK and EU transactions and agreements are suspended during this process. EU will indefinitely give extensions with a "fee" of course. And UK will accept these fees. I highly doubt EU will say "nope, you're out". As they need UKs money.

About the needed unanimous agreement: please remember that not all the 27 members are the same. Most of them can be "commanded" to vote for the extension, as long as the big players in the EU agree among themselves that the extension is to be given. Sure, one of the "little ones" could try to put a veto on the extension, but the big ones would quickly "convince" them to change their mind putting pressure through politics and economics.

They never believed the vote would be leave. They took part in this chaos for what was best for their party not what was best for the UK. I can see no reason for thanking people for finally doing the job they were elected to do as we teeter on the edge of the cliff.
I am not certain the UK will get their extension. After all, the other members have to agree unanimously on it. If only one member throws the UK out they are out. Period.

I am an American and this is my first exposure to whatever the hell this is and I have so many questions.
This is our government. Help us all
Ironically I am an American and can possibly answer many of them. I lived in the UK so I know a little bit.
Darren Skjoelsvold OK cool. First of all, I still don’t fully understand what Brexit is and the motivation behind it.
The US is, in my opinion, on the brink of a civil war, but after heading your explanation, it definitely sounds worse off “across the pond.”
So.

At this point if I were her id just resign cause the parliament doesnt want any of this brexit act to actually end it seems.
Personaly I don t think the United Kingdom s government actually want the Brexit and they are currently stalling, only to eventually quit all together

This is the first time I actually understood what the heck is happening with brexit so thanks for the fantastic video...we really need these translation videos for regular mortals 😂
Why are they screaming, talking and acting as if they were in a pub in the parliament? Is this the norm in the uk parliament that the speaker has to remind people to shut up when people are speaking. It looks like a class of special needs students and a new teacher that doesn't have any control over the class.
True
Actually, British Parliament is a lot more civilised than most other countries with similar parliamentary system - you should watch the speaker of Indian Parliament the poor man/lady has absolutely no control whatsoever - it's like a helpless teacher trying to control some out of control retarded children.
I belive the house has a bar...imagine drinking at work!
Short answer: that´s how it was done many hundreds of years ago and they decided to just keep doing it as that how it always been done xD

@@Morbuto no deal out must be on that ballot, & it also must be a numbered balot, with oc all being allowed to only place one vote if they only support 1 option, & this coming from someone who believes britain's best place is exerting pressure from within the EU to secure national integrity not sitting outside of it, there's a matter of democratic integrity to be upheld
They will have to fork up the money the UK used to put in. I can see them allowing it.
About the needed unanimous agreement: please remember that not all the 27 members are the same. Most of them can be "commanded" to vote for the extension, as long as the big players in the EU agree among themselves that the extension is to be given. Sure, one of the "little ones" could try to put a veto on the extension, but the big ones would quickly "convince" them to change their mind putting pressure through politics and economics.
can we just thank all those MPs who didnt follow May's three whip? Because being booted from your party is a serious case and I can understand not wanting to piss off superiors.
Don't be in such a hurry to thank people who risked everything under Cameron by offering a binary referendum on something so complex for no other reason than to negate the threat to the conservative vote by UKIP.
Period.
Freaking Littlefinger's politics. They made chaos and now they play the game to gain as much power as possible out of it.
And we all know what happend to Littlefinger...

If and When Brexit goes through i would love to see a completely new system of democracy in this country along with a new place for it to be held
AstroWolfGaming So true.
I'm hoping for a fist fight.
That's never going to happen. Any change to the electoral system would need to be supported by the government, but whoever that is has always been elected via the current system so has everything to lose and nothing to gain by changing it. We're stuck in an eternal cycle of always being governed for the good of the party in charge and not the good of the people, which is exactly how we got into this Brexit mess in the first place.

Surely the EU are getting fed up with this delaying over and over..is there any chance the EU just take a deal off the table and force no deal on the UK for messing them about?
Nah they want UK's money. if the UK is given a no deal the rest of the countries will have to fork up the money to replace them.

Ladies and gentlemen - democracy inaction!
Er, I mean, democracy in action!
;-)
Lycurgus of Sparta, before delivering the new Law, would be uncontrollably vomiting until he could finally bring himself to draw his sword and plunge it into his gut if he were given vision of what democracy was to become...
Lycurgus definitely knew the risks and he accounted for them, but it's odd another Ancient Philosopher from Athens of all places despised democracy because it killed his mentor. Strange to think, Plato wrote an outline for Fascism (not the sort synonymous with today, but fascism) that is studied by many who never get what he was saying....
If this here democracy can't work out this issue.. The Queen shall regain full power and make the decision..
So... what happened with this? How is no one mentioning this Amendment?

500+ MPs to act on behalf of the people, yet not one of them is actually qualified to negotiate their way in or out of a paper bag
No deal is our best hand within the negotiations. we're basically giving up and surrendering at this point

British Parliament: "I reject your reality!"
Alternately, for nerds: "I roll to disbelieve!"
It's not for Britain to decide if they get any concessions out of Brexit. Their vote doesn't compel the E.U. to pass gas, let alone conditions they favour. As long as Britain demands to leave, EUROPE SETS THE TERMS up to and including tariffs higher than Bran's Wall.
If you peel away all the layers of formality, the British parliament is basically just throwing a temper tantrum.
As an outsider how i see it.. basically England is wasting 2-4 yrs to lay waste England, Scotland, Wales, N Ireland for decades to come.
That's a weird way to see it. Why would it "lay waste" anything? Because there's not a government supervising their government? Would pulling out of the UN "lay waste" the United States?
Which is to say you don't see it at all.
@@riogrande1840 The economic impact of Brexit on Britain and the world are not under debate. It will be rough to leave, it's whether or not Britons are willing to harm themselves to such an extent.
