AnimeFreakLucky7 it’s just the fact not many will give this show a shot because of that old art style. If we got something like the ova it be great. Or HXH
The soundtrack in chapter black saga is really something else. The use of light and shadows, the blocking and perspective and pacing make this battle stand out. And while many shows from the time are notorious for recycling animations constantly, yyh REANIMATES the same scenes during its recap segments. This show is too good for us I swear.
I just recently finished this show and I totally agree with you, the whole saga reminded me of the eerie tone that Bleach had when it started out,(funny enough I started Bleach first way back then this a bit later, now I have a big huge disrespect for Bleach, for sort of copying its world and stuff lol) This anime was one of the most underappreciated classics of all time
people underrate it...yusuke has to hold back...he clearly is stronger but there is so much conflict going on from how the territory works to the issue of killing a human that he has to hold back...makes it a case study on tension and atmosphere rather than a simple how will hero win scenario.....we get that doctor is out matched but he has leveled the field in a way and sensui has rigged this to enlighten yusuke
It was pretty easy. I get this is an anime where people shoot lasers from their finger's but Doctor's bio powers would not save him even from a casual Yusuke punch

Gritty, tensed, and raw. One of the best fights in anime. The lighting, snappy animation, the dialogue, elongated, and expressive artworks all work at the same time to deliver this gripping fighting scene.
In hindsight, the odd animations in some of these episodes adds an artistic styling to the series. Back in the day, I thought these were low budget episodes with drawing errors or something. But even if that was the case (which it's not), the way some of these episodes are drawn is so unique with the close-ups, exaggerated faces, elongated bodies and shadows, that you can't help but appreciate it! It gives a unique coolness to YYH! Something MOST anime don't have!

This fight was animated around 1994 and it's still one of the best fight scene to ever exist in all of Anime. The choreography, the sounds, the pacing and colors was outstanding. Goes to show just how talented Yusuke is at fighting. Remember that before he was trained by Genkai he was always top dog in human on human fights, even against multiple opponents. But he would break bones, bend limbs, and bruise; but never kill another human no matter how pissed he got. But after double checking I think Yusuke killed far less demons than we thought. Remember his spirit beast, he looks tough on the outside because he "has" to. He's strong and good with his fists so he gets targeted but he never took that path despite being more than capable of it. At this point in the story Yusuke had only killed a handful of demons, the one no one remembers who worked with kurama and hiei, Suzaku, and some unnamed mooks during the Rescue Yukina ark. Still even when his enemies are weakened in front of him and on their death bed he doesn't kill them unless they are actively fighting him, forcing him to kill, or were actively trying to kill him. For example he wouldnt kill Hiei while he's unconscious on the ground and was more focused on destroying the makai whistle than killing suzaku of the saint beasts. The only arc Yusuke killed multiple sentient demons was the Rescue Yukina arc and even then it was low level fodder who threw themselves at him. Im not sure he even finished off the triad as all of them were left unconscious with no signs of lethal damage. Hell in the dark tournament, where you're supposed to kill your opponent, the only demon he killed was Toguro. He didnt kill any of his other opponents all winning via a ring out or a count down. Even Dr Ichigaki who he was furious at but he only knocked him out the ring and shouted that he "think about what you've done." It also goes to show just how much his mind set changed once he started interacting with Hiei and Kurama. Once he saw that Demons were able to live with humans peacefully he would beat them to a pulp and get them to stop but not kill them unless they forced him to kill them by targeting someone he cared for like Suzaku or Toguro. This is why The Doctor was such a hard fight for him. Yusuke is running off of his normal MO and logic of "look i'm stronger than you by a significant margin and can kill you at any point, but I'll just keep using false swipe until they go unconsious". But with with the doctor no damage he dealt mattered unless he ended the doctors life. You can see him trying to just so carefully ramp up the damage while reminding the doctor he could have ended his life with each engagement but the doctor just kept getting back up.
Man the nostalgia. I could watch reruns constantly of YuYu, DBZ, and Ruroni Kenshin without even thinking twice or fall asleep with it on. The animation especially the fighting styles and detail holds up to this day and is what is missing from today's amines. I am not bashing today's anime at all, I am just 33 and I love what I grew up with glad to call them classics!
Animation, actions, mindsets, art styles, everything about this is why I miss old shows like Yu yu hakusho. It just feels everything today is rather lacking compared to back then.
Every time I rewatch this fight I just can’t believe how far Yusuke has come from the beginning of the story! He was getting wiped out by weak demons, now he’s dodging attacks that split in an entire hallway with such subtle movement like WOWOWOOW

Most anime from 30 years ago hold up very well or even surpass current series in many ways. It's just a fallacy that old anime is worse because of it's age
Too bad Sniper, game master and Sensui sucked. Could have had Sensui develop a dangerous territory where the characters had to use the skills they've learned to overcome it. Instead we get a generic super strength, super speed, and flight- type of villain who gets infinitely stronger, fucks Yusuke up, then Yusuke gets infinitely stronger, and then Yusuke gets even more infinitely stronger and fucks Sensui up. Fuck, this arc had so much potential.
@@oceanstar2294 Well if you grew up watching funimations original 276 episode english dub between 1996-2003 Raditz was voiced by Jason grey-Stanford. Ofcourse funimation would go back and redub these episodes in 2005 with their own voice talent and in this version Justin cook is the voice of raditz.
You miss all the artistic animation shortcuts used to make shows look more dynamic that just so happened to be most present in the Cel era since Cels took significantly longer to animate with than digitals. Nowadays, studios and most anime fans value animation over art or aesthetic, which isn't to say that the latter two aren't needed at all, but just that studios and fans prefer shit to move constantly because our attentions spans have decreased since the 90s, so cool looking stills with interchangable colors staying on screen for more than 5 seconds just isn't as profitable anymore. I miss it too.
And I miss people not talknig or cpmplaining about it at all... Pre 2010 whp cares, as long as anime looks great it doesn't even matter. Internet sadly destroyed this once great thing for me, i miss the simpel fact of watching it rather than making discussions more heavy than political ones

@@xm_heecka.laddder.job_mx5962 This debate has been going for decades at this point, dude. There have always been hardline militants against anything practically from '04 onward, and people who hate "old" animation purely on principle, not for any specific reason. That makes me wonder something else: If Doctor can manipulate his biological processes so well, could he eventually slow or even halt his aging processes?
One thing to keep in mind is this: a TON of people died off-screen in this scene. Doctor mentions that the weaker someone is, the quicker they die from his illness, then says that Yusuke's friends have 30 minutes. Given that Yusuke's friends are young, healthy people with spirit power, it means that anyone weaker than them have *less time* to live. And this fight is happening in a hospital full of sick, injured, older, and non-spirit-powered humans. Yusuke BARELY manages to kill Doctor before the time limit is reached, saving his sick friends, and afterwards Genkai revives Doctor. Later, Doctor is called a mass murderer by authorities after he changes his face and sees his wanted poster outside a police station.

The fact that Yusuke knows he’ll be judged for his actions when he dies, he knows that taking Human Life is a Serious Crime regardless of reason. Even if this will save lives, the fact is he will have some judgement for this murder. Not to mention he will have it on his conscious until he eventually dies.
How is it murder? It's a corrupt human who tried to kill him. Japan have too many 'life is sacred' bs as long as it's a human. But the doctor was clearly too gone. It's very unfair.
Taking human life isn't so serious a crime at all when you've already been dead, you're friends with the grim reaper, and the guy running the Afterlife is the same guy who sent you out on this mission. Yusuke isn't afraid of judgement from others. Everyone else in his life will agree he's done the right thing here, just like Genkai did. It's his own sense of right and wrong that's telling him he doesn't want to kill the guy. This is why Yusuke will always and forever be my favorite shonen protagonist. He has a sense of moral clarity that I never see anywhere else. He's got his priorities straight. He consistently went for the minimum level of force necessary to take the Doctor down, and when he had no choice but to kill him, he bit the bullet and did it. He didn't do the western superhero thing of valuing the mass murdering psycho's life above the innocent people he's killing, but he didn't do the typical shonen thing of treating matters of life and death lightly. Even when he's got every reason to shrug off the implications with his certain knowledge of the afterlife and literally being on a mission from God.
@@falconeshield Ask someone who has killed someone else what it felt like after the fact. They say they'll never stop seeing the face of the first person they killed. These episodes stoke with me a lot as a kid, Yusuke has the power to cremate the Doctor but held back cause he was human, but the Doc kept forcing Yusuke's hand relying on the good nature of humanity to get away with atrocities feeling he would get away with it. So the question arises how much should good people tolerate before evil has its way.
Other shonen heroes: “What’s wrong with you? Can’t you see you’re only fighting out of anger because of your tragic backstory? What ‘d yah see we be friends instead of fight?” Yuusuke: “I wrote and advice book for bad guys, it’s called DON’T PISS ME OFF!”

This is the most SHAFT thing I've ever seen in a show not produced by SHAFT. Akiyuki Shinbo is one of those directors with a style so distinctive, it bleeds through every nook and cranny of an episode's production. A true auteur of Japanese animation.
The point of the saga was that humans can be worse than demons, up until now he spent the series thinking demons were were evil and slowly learning to respect them.
The chapter black saga only had visuals and music going for it. The plot itself is undeniably rushed and not well executed, with it pretentiously pretending as if its pseudo philosophical nonsense on morality is deep or innovative. Doesn't even compare to the Dark Tournament.

Even Dr Ichigaki who he was furious at but he only knocked him out the ring and shouted that he "think about what you've done."
It also goes to show just how much his mind set changed once he started interacting with Hiei and Kurama.
You can see him trying to just so carefully ramp up the damage while reminding the doctor he could have ended his life with each engagement but the doctor just kept getting back up.
eeyup
Agreed. Yusuke character is the best
I like that whole "Keeps using False Swipe until he's down for the count".

Cel animation was fucking amazing. It's a shame no one using it anymore. But it's understandable. It's much easier to use CG nowadays and cheaper too.

This fight shows how far yusuke came from the beginning of the show
One thing to keep in mind is this: a TON of people died off-screen in this scene.
In addition, Doctor kills a bunch of other doctors right before this fight starts and then kills a bunch of police officers in order to escape.

The shading wasn't even in the original manga. Props to the anime artists for adding the atmosphere.
This is why Yusuke is one of the best, most underrated protagonists.
Not really
@@falconeshield Ask someone who has killed someone else what it felt like after the fact.

It's interesting how you know Yusuke is strong enough to beat him, but the fight is still so unexpected and exciting.
