- I did four Warhammer 40k Combat Patrols in 2023, and I enjoyed it. Will I bother to do another?

Could just be my PC, but the audio levels seem a bit inconsistent. Not wildly so, just something I picked up on.
Seems like whenever there is a cut, the sound takes a second to rise to full volume, not sure if intended.
Yes the volume does seem to fade in and out all the way through.
I have the same issue on my headphones so it's not just your speakers.
Yep, his editing software has put a fade effect on either end of each audio clip.
Yeah I came here to say the same thing.
Would love to see the black armor tutorial!
I'll second this! I've got about 2500 points of sisters to paint so this would be helpful!
Absolutely, love that less contrasty black look!
Same. I've just started in on 40k with Deathwatch (lol) and I'm not fully content with any black armor painting techniques yet.
Thirded

I would very much like to see you do the Tau and bookending that great chapter on your hobby career. Get your that closure on your army that never was.
Plus, maybe you can petition Sam to do a 2024 HD reboot of the "Tau for SAAALE" clip.
This!
Agreed: before and after skills growth video or stream or both would be very cool and insightful and inspiring.
(For the Algorithm) Agreed, that was my take on it as well. Would be a fun nostalgia piece.
I’d absolutely love to get a tutorial on how you paint your black armor. And combat patrol was my starter drug to Warhammer 40K too. Really hoping AoS does the same with the launch this summer, as I’d love to have an easy entry into that too.
I'm a historical wargamer but you're the only non-historical wargamer I watch. Great advice on painting techniques and great content as always!
I’m getting ready to paint some shadow keeper Custodes. So a black armor tutorial would be super helpful! Especially since your style on the death watch was so good!
I vote Tau, that sound cool to pick some up 15 years later and go to town on the faction that you stated with. If you have the original models, it would also be interesting to see the side by side when you get the new ones done.
I would love to see a video on your process for painting black armor.
Adding my vote for T'au. I think the connection to one of your first painted armies makes it particularly compelling.
dark angels next please, and i love your work, i love your painting techniques and the way you explain how and why you do what you do. inspiring!!!!
Honestly, ever try Middle Earth SBG? I wasn’t even into LOTR much but gave it a shot with the skirmish version, and WOW was a surprised how good the rules and flow was. The old style minis even make it kinda chill to paint them up.
He absolutely should try it, it's a really good way of playing tabletop wargaming.
And a brilliant game system.
I love it
@@alexholt5930 I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. I had zero interest in getting into it, then… i tried a practice game tutorial with a friend and I was hooked
Just started Middle Earth back in the summer. It's definitely GW's best game as far as rules and balance. Lots of fun to play and I'm not really into the universe.
I’m interested in Battle Companies, actually. My wife’s a big LotR fan, so she might be interested. Thanks for watching!
Unusual audio issues in this video. When the camera angle changes, the volume goes down and slowly returns to normal, or I would say that some filters kick in and the effect has a decay a few seconds long.
Yep, this video was my first video with the new software (and new audio plugins) and I’m still learning. The audio plugin volume levels was set to ‘auto’ so that’s the first thing I gotta change for next week. Thanks for watching!
Dark angels are getting a new combat patrol. My Necron combat patrol is fun to play
Would LOVE a black armour tutorial from you! I have the same combat patrol to paint and would love to have a good down to earth tutorial!
I watched the entirety of the Deathwatch sessions. When I finally get the motivation to finish painting them, they'll look way better than the ones I've already finished and it's mostly because I watched you. Good stuff.
I would very much like to see your take on painting black armour, just building up a deathwatch force at the minute.
I was super keen for new 40k, i played for a couple of months but i got over all the rapid updates fast. When we play now we ignor all updates and just play what was released back a new edition start
Would really like to see the tutorial on Painting Black armor. I bought the same Death Watch box and kind of struggled to make them look the way I wanted them to with the highlights and contrast.
The people I play with have either started working on The Old World or Legion Imperialis and we've gotten in a few games of Mordheim and Warhammer Quest. I only have the Necron and Space Marine CPs done and only played a handful of games but I do like playing the Necrons more than the Space Marines.
I'll vote for the old Adeptus Mechanicus CP. I also love the Dunecrawler and wouldn't mind seeing how you painted it.
Love the cut of your jib!
Would love to see that painting black armor video and great job on these projects as always sir!
Would love to see your do a tutorial video for how you paint black or even a full process of how you painted your deathwatch combat patrol
I like the concept of combat patrol and i like painting and collecting them. As a dawn of war 1 veteran i like being able to have all these different factions.
On a building note its easy to make convertions. So i have an astra militarum patrol with death Korps instead of cadian. I am curremtly working on an admech patrol that uses forgeworld heresy admech models and Tau rules (thallax instead of ghost suits, tech priest for etherial and so one).
I also plan making an necromunda gangers combat patrol using vaan sar and escher models with adeptus sororitas rules.
I've been collecting CP the last year. And funny enough. I have almost the same CP laying in my bunker that Atom was thinking of doing. And I have also been thinking about what to do next. Thank you Atom for the great videos you've been posting. It gives me a real boost to watch them regarding the hobby. Have a nice weekend.
I'm always up for more tutorial videos. You even mentioned in a previous one how you'll watch things you may already know just to glean other little bits from them. So yep, put out as many as you want, we'll watch them!
I love playing regular 40k 10th so I moved on from combat patrol. When playing your guard, one tip (you probably already know), if your opponent tries to leave just a couple of models alive so you can use reinforcements, charge one of their units. They can either kill you or retreat. If they retreat they can’t shoot or charge. So you force them to kill or tar pit one of their units.
I also painted four combat patrols (and a set of terrain) in 2023. I’ve played seven games of combat patrol as well and don’t mind the system. I think these make an excellent medium-sized project. I won’t be painting another 40k combat patrol for another year or two BUT I believe AoS will be getting a vanguard mode and I’ll be painting four vanguard boxes as an introduction to that system!
I have similar feelings about combat patrol. I spent a long time painting up my space marines from leviathan (I’m mostly a painter pretty new to gaming) and got absolutely destroyed in VP. Low mobility on terminators plus small unit count is not especially beginner friendly. I also played with my dark angels combat patrol. That game I won. I won hard. And I felt kindof bad the whole time because the game basically turned into my dreadnought bullying everything off the board.
I like combat patrol as a game mode, but no one at my local GW is interested in it. It’s a moderate sized club, but most people already have multiple armies so their advice to me is just get up to 1000 or 2000 points for a better experience. This kinda sucks for me because I do like the limited rules and scope. I feel like I forget things even with only 3 squads. But I don’t know if I’d be jumping out to buy a different factions combat patrol now.
Would love to see your take on Tau! They were the first faction I played a game of CP with. I do think CP works well as an easier/quicker version of the game for newer players, but I tend to aim for slightly larger games just to play with more model variety. I think you're spot on with a critique of more than a few faction's prescribed CP lists in that they are too unit light which makes holding objectives a challenge.
If you want to win, Dark Angels are a good pick 😄 I'm a bit slow with my second combat patrol (GSC), but a friend of mine just joined our painting/playing group, so I expect to pick it up soon 😊
I just want to see Atom’s paint procedure for Dark Angels cause I want to paint some 95th Rifles for Silver Bayonet. And play Sharpe with my dolls.
Please make the black armor tutorial! Getting ready for black templars myself so perfect timing
This isn't mean to be a slight against any other creators as there's so many great ones but you just have the best demeanor I love your videos. Your black armor looks fantastic
Would be absolutely delighted to see that T'au set done up.
Sisters is quite a nice one - lots of models, varied models, with similar but different schemes (flagellants, sisters, the flying ones and the repentias with the chainsaws, and a character or two) you get a mech dude thing and a rhino. I am enjoying coming up with a scheme that works, having varied models with different but unified schemes and having small numbers per unit so I’m not painting a gazillion of the same set of power armor. They are also the most bonkers faction in 40K.
Id say Tau are a combat patrol you HAVE to do if it was one of your starter ones. I just finished the Tyranid one from Leviathan and its great seeing them all on the table. Im much more in the hobby for painting than gaming (mostly due to how time works out) but I do want to grab 2-3 more combat patrols as both fun painting projects and for the game mode.
I have been painting GW models since the great Nurgle incident of 2020. My first game was a Combat Patrol game after the launch of 10th ed. I have played several since and it is my favorite way to play. I am not big on huge games or building lists. I have 3 Combat Patrols and plan to get more, eventually.
I feel you on that, IN 2023 I successfullly finished 1 Tau Pathfinders Kill Team (Kauyon Yash Savon) roster, and 1 Death Guard (The Rusted Host) Roster
As for what to do next, I vote tau, because when I came back to GW after my long Hiatus I went back to my first ever army (Cadre D'Yanoi Ta'Ro'Cha Ko'Vash Tau'Va) and made a Kill Team out of tau of the same name, but Meant to be remnants of the destroyed cadre. I did however pick a new colour scheme because I had grown to not like my old teenage Silver and Blue one.
Very solid reason with painting GeeDubs models on stream! The appeal of familiar models for the fan favourite models is always there.
I'd root for the Tau Patrol Box myself. I'm biast but at the same time curious to see and possibly learn how you tackle the infantry models with your signature "kwik and ez" paint techniques.
Also xenos races are "under-represented" in 40k hobby space so more power armour isn't that welcome in my books.
In the end you do you, Adam!
I'm currently building the Marine and Nids for me and my 10 year old from the ultimate starter set to play combat patrol. I like the idea of the format and premade lists and army rules/abilities to keep things simple for me and my kiddo.
Yea to that tutorial on black Armour!!!
I must say, it's really cool to see you getting hyped if not for Warhammer 40k, the Combat Patrol stuff for 40k. Your enthusiasm is getting me back into the hobby after a 3 month hiatus. I don't particularly like nor agree with many changes to the core rules GW tends to make each edition, but I'll never give up the hobby soooo. Yeah.
Not remotely related to Combat Patrol, GW, or the cut of your very admirable jib, but I thought I’d report that I have just acquired a fidget popper for use as a palette, the virtues of which you extolled some months ago and again in your Products of 2023 video last week. Mine is half blue and half white, an entirely white one proving impossible to find, but as it is larger than I expected its 14 usable wells should prove perfectly adequate. Thank you again for this excellent tip.
I used to watch for the painting tips.
Now, it's all about your jib.
Tutorial on the black armor would be awesome!
Awesome showcase, thankyou. Please do a demonstration of how you do your zenithal style black. Never played the new rules, my mates enjoy using rules based on 9th Edition stats and pretty much base 40k rules from 4th to 6th edition, with added house rules we made up. Examples would be 20 Plague Zombies can flip a Rhino sized vehicle on a strength check in close combat etc... And house rules have always been a thing for heavy weapons being able to move and shoot with a -1 to hit, long before GdWb put it in the rule book in 8th edition... Nothing like a Devastator Squad with Heavy Bolters doing a room clear. For campaigning we still use the 8th edition and a wound chart from WH40k Compendium, it is ruthless. But it sets the scene, of tragic adventure/war. Most scenarios are story motivated, exercising escape, rescue/capture, and assassinate/escape. My favourite was Eldar Scout Mercenaries "cred bank robbers" vs Adeptus Arbites on a hive world, escaping to an FW Eldar Vampire on a landing pad.
1. Great video. While there may be some sound issues, I love the crispness of your voice with this new software setup.
2. I enjoy watching you paint anything, but I'd particularly enjoy seeing you tackle the Dark Angels combat patrol (it's my personal army of choice). Talk about very few models: 1x Primaris Chaplain, 3x Inceptors, 1x Redemptor Dreadnought, and 5x Primaris Intercessors.
I would love to see a video on how you do black armor! And for the next combat patrol why not get the old ad mech box and have fun painting something you like!
I vote for seeing you complete the meaningful project of your Tau, and all the videos that could spawn from that!
I do not get much time to wargame with friends, as being adults kinda stinks at times lol but when we do get time , we often lean into more of a 500 point game cuz it allows us to start and finish in a reasonable time frame. I absolutely love combat patrol box sets and even the new xmas sets really hit the spot as I picked up the Orks stampede box. What an amazing set of mini's to paint through and options with skin tone and such.
Genestealer Cult have one of the best combat patrols imo, highly recommend
Of your three potential boxes…I vote for Tau. I’d love to see a side by side with your original army vs the new patrol. The skill difference would be cool to see….
1. The cut of your jib is liked.
2. I enjoy seeing you stick with combat patrol its a noce consistent theme and id really enjoy seeing you even do a wee report with even its talking over pictures of your games.
3. All great choices, but Tau seem like it could be a solid passion project.
I'm finally able to do Combat Patrol. My closest store hasn't done anything with the format, and I had a schedule conflict with a store farther away. That conflict is resolved, so I'm testing out Death Guard in a Combat Patrol league.
Grey Knights would be awesome! That Dreadknight is awesome.
My group of friends moved on from combat patrols fairly quickly scaling up to 1k games. that said they are still amazing as a start collecting option. Of the options you presented I like the Tau army partly because i'm working on my own Tau CP right now actually. That ghost keel is a great model and is staring at my primed.
Seeing the Tau "fifteen years of experience later" would be a very cool video, as would "how I painted my Mechanicus / Dark Angels CPs"
i so need to get back into painting minis again. i keep watching, and try seeing if i can revive the older paint that is about 5 years old, have added water so some and shaken, but not consistent with all colors. think i need to bite the bullet and buy another set of paints and move on. thanks uncle!
Great to see your work, looks amazing! Black armour tutorial please 🙏
My group loves combat patrol! 2000 point games are fun, but sometimes you just want a quicker experience.
Thanks for the video!
I would love to watch the Tau on twitch.
And Happy New Year!
We were so excited for 10th. Never got a game in before rule and unit changes hit. Have not got a game in to date. Still painting.
Love your humor and that jib of yours is always cut so nicely.
I really like the power armor/space marine models but at $160, it's a bit pricey for me to get started in a game I don't know if I'll like or even find someone to play with. Guess I'll stick to Battletech. Not that I play that either, but the mechs are pretty cool.
Just based on the pictures, I'd like to see you tackle the Tau next. They look pretty cool.
I love combat patrol!
With battleline units having sticky objectives and limited big vehicles, everything has a clear role to play, and with the unique enhancements, stratagems, and secondaries, the different patrols have a lot of flavor.
The only downside is it gets less attentiom from GW, so I don’t expect any major balance overhauls, which means certain patrols, like the Dark Angels one, are probably going to be very strong for a long while! Having a redemptor dreadnaught sounds strong, because it sure is!
A black armor tutorial video would definitely be appreciated.
Happy New Year Uncle Atom!
Huzzah! Happy New Year Buddy!
Currently working on my first ever army, but, I've been itching to start Combat Patrol and Warcry. I'm not great at remembering the rules of 40k and AoS, and playing a compact game would help me a bunch. I think Combat Patrol is the way to go!
Great video as always. I've painted the Ork and Necron; my son's painted / is painting Grey Knights and Guard. We've had a lot of fun. It does seem playing if you can take out the "big" thing, it's pretty much over. We aren't very experienced though so that might just be user error, lol.
I just picked up the old AdMech combat patrol box that you’re referring to! I want to play cohort cybernetica detachment and many if not all of those models fit into my list. This is my first army. Wish me luck. Great video. Thanks
I suggest Dark Angels for your next CP box painting project followed by Tau. I'm also collecting CP boxes and treating them like premade MTG commander decks that you choose not to upgrade. My CPs are Leviathan SM, DA, Tau, Necrons, Orks, and Chaos SM.
I just finished painting my Black Templar Combat Patrol. Im enjoying the formet so far, and I'm planning on getting my Custodes done soon.
I would definitely agree about the older ad mech combat patrol. I am currently painting an Dark Angels army but not too enamored by the combat patrol. Tau would be cool or a box I managed to win but yet to paint is the World Eaters. Maybe a melee heavy combat patrol might be different to the ones you already run.
The next 40k Hachette partwork has been announced: 40K Combat Patrol. Where you'll get 9 combat patrols. However, likely 12 months before it hits US. UK likely to get it in August.
That could feed your itch long-term.
I love the idea of combat patrol, and I'm working on building a Guard box right now. I'm using krieg models with the load out of the box though.
I bought an Adeptus Mechanicus combat patrol, but I'm going to use it for a Necromunda Enforcers gang. The horsie guys are going to count as wastelander dirtbikes. I haven't decided how to use the winged guys, but I'm still going to paint them up anyway. Also got the Gravv-y boat to use as a modified Cargo-8 with hover drive conversion.
I'm the opposite way from you. I couldn't stand the old AdMech CP, but I snapped up the new one as soon as it went on pre-order.
I like Combat Patrol. Some of my friends and I brought multiple patrols and switched them around to play multiple rounds in an evening. Never tried World Eaters before but I got to play my friends patrol and I see the appeal
Try One Page Rules, there are a lot of fun and you can use your GW modells😊
I think it would be fun to watch you paint some tau. Cant help in the gameplay department have yet to play my girst game of warhammer but I love painting. Appreciate all the content!
Ive not played a game of 10th yet - almost not a game in 9th either. My biggest 40k era were 3rd and very much 4th edition. And some in 5th. But getting together a group to play a Crusade campaign now. Also getting one of my kids onboard. I am unsure about Coimbat patrol as it have some different unit rules than the basic game. Kind of worried I will confuse rules in my head and use more time rereading more often.
Also getting into Old World as I have become grumpy with AoS, that I loved in 1st edition. But Old World seems to hit the right notes with my. I loved 6th edition.
And yesterday had my first Mordheim battle, Ostermark mercenaries vs Beastmen. So much fun! Thinking that I maybe woul enjoy Necromunda too then - but it so many books and stuff. Need to find out what I really need to play.
And really enjoy your content. Relaxing to listen too.
Dark Angels Combat Patrol is a really fun list. I've got that Tau box as one of my next up for the building desk, so I'd love to see you do that one too.
Mechanicus for sure!!! Then perhaps Drukhari...and maybe Tyranids...great video...
Really like your Guard, shall look for the painting vids. Also, your black armour tutorial would be good, those models look nice.
Make sure to check the combat patrol rules adaptions , and scenarios. Sticky objectives and a lower number of them. That being said some of the combat patrols are much better than others. I've played a pile of combat patrol. As an example I played a league with Chaos Space Marines , and then the next league with Thousand Suns. Both were fun to play, but winning with Thousand Suns was .. much harder.
T'AU FOR SALE!
One thing I've become aware of this year is not letting GW monopolise my time and hobby budget. There are lots of other games and miniature makers that value your business more. That said, your legions of space bros look great, nice job!
Combat patrol is my main way of playing the new edition. It’s a lot of fun and means me and the people at the club and play a game after work without taking too much time. + it gets me to experience and experiment with factions I otherwise wouldn’t
Tau would be my vote for next combat patrol and I'd like to see a tutorial on black armor too. Enjoy the videos and a friend and I are about to have our first game of Space Station Zero!
Been enthralled by the cut of your jib for years now, sir. Great vid, as always.
I'd definitely watch your black armor tutorial and would love to get a look at how you'd paint your Tau
Thank you again for another great show, hope your holidays were good.
Excellent video and solid content as always! The sound level did seem to go back and forth from soft to loud a bit on this one though.
Trying to learn a new audio plugin to help with all the studio noise. Still learning. Thanks for watching!
Seeing those Tau from back then, followed by the new models in the same schem after years of improvement? Sounds like a win to me!
I would love to see your take on the mechanicus. I was thinking of 3d printing an Imperial Guard CB but using Redmakers Solar Auxiliary, but I may hold off to see what GW has coming out.
Neurons looked cool. I now have a phobos force as they were already painted, kinda lucky :) thanks for the vid.
You have the Tyranids CP from Leviathan, paint & play them maybe. OR, paint up some of your other Space Marine models to form the Dark Angels Combat Patrol.
Excellent summary Atom on the Quad of Patrols, would definatley love to see a stream on Twitch for the Black Power Armour as my next project is an Inquistional force based on Astra Militarum models. For next Combat Patrol Box from a painting perspective would like to see the Adeptus Mechanicus as I agree they are very cool models. On Gameplay - Meh,the models all work great with OPR and have dumped the GW rulesets into the archives long ago.
Yes Atom, I'm always looking for tutorials on black armor! Also I'd vote for Ad Mech for next combat patrol since you are excited about a model from it and Ifeel like the Tau are overdue for some new models, wouldn't be surprised if it happened in the near future.
I'd love to see you paint Tau in the original scheme you used back in the day.
Great video! Please make that black power armor video. I have some Sisters of Battle that need it. Thanks!
Tau would be neat to see you work on. Have to say getting into Kill team. Because of watching your channel. And Pete the Wargamers kitbashing.
I tried to play straight up games of 10th when it came out and I couldn't stand it. Bounced hard off the rules and the point deflation.
I'm trying 10th again through Combat Patrol in a local casual group that starts Monday. I'm hoping it's enjoyable. It feels much more manageable prep-wise because I can focus on learning the fundamentals of the rules since the list building is already done for me.
If it's not fun, well, at least I got a bunch of minis I had sitting around painted!
