Really happy to see a new series going up. I'm an electrical engineer, but honestly after watching so many of your videos, I'm feeling encouraged to try building my new really simple 600sqft 1sty home on my land in Maine by myself. Keep up the great content and keep using these as an opportunity to teach.
Awesome video can't wait for the next one! The pop-up descriptions of the tools you are using/random descriptions is very helpful and I want to thank you for that!
Hey Matt, I'm a 27 year old mechanic from Florida, I've been looking forward to all your builds and I am planning a 25ft x 50ft expansion to my home. Watching your videos gives the confidence that I can do it and do it right, I've been to home depot every weekend looking for good framing tools, thanks for all the quality content and I'm already waiting for those walls to go up. See yah later Bang on!
Hell yea man! That concrete driveway series was cool, but im pumped to see another awesome build series! Thought your plate drilling trick you shared was pretty cool aswell! Bang On!🔨📐
Thanks for your videos my friend, is awesome your small pictures of tools on the video links and prices of tools and all the staff you use. Thanks Allan
Hey Matt thanks for the videos. I built for a living for quite a few years then took a decade plus hiatus and am now full time again. Your videos have been a thorough reintroduction and are much appreciated. I’m wondering what the name of the tool/ jig is you use for bolt marking your treated footers? Being a bit older than the last time I built I’m all for any tools and tricks that keep me off my knees, being hunched over, or any other stooped uncomfortable positions. Thanks again!
I love layout. I did it in Vegas during buildings boom 1991 to 2000 . It paid 16 cents sf piecework. It's hard on the back though. I drilled plates same way as you. I still have bolt marker.
Curious if you could describe/identify the different components of a framing job as you work through this project or a future project? Things such as headers, cripples, jack and king studs, etc. It would be a big help to us novices. Bang On!

Just wondering why you don't treat the inside of the holes you drill? I'm from Northern Canada and our lumber would need it done. Is your lumber treated all the way through?
What's up Matt Ibe been trying to decide if going in to framing is a good Idea I'm currently a sheet metal installer and want to switch to something else. Is framing as cut and dry as it seems or is it a vast field ?
Great Video Matt, but why are some of the bottom plates offset by ~1"+ (i.e. outer red line) toward the inside of the building and yet other times in the video the bottom plate is flush with the concrete face?
If he does, it'll be later on. He's on a 3-story 3-plex with another contractor right now. All is good with us, he's been off and on with us for years.
Why do you have two achor bolts at the end of each bottom plate? Why does one extend further above the concrete than the other? IS this required by CA code?
For bottom plate, we keep all plate lengths 4'+, try to break next to an anchor bolt, as you have to have anchor bolts on both sides of plate break (we'll use TITEN's on the side missing bolt). On big sections, break them in a door way, as the doorway bottom plate will cut out after framing is done. For top plate, we always break the first plate on a stud layout [16" O.C.] and second plate is never within 4' of intersecting walls, or 4' of first plate break.
been a while since i’ve seen a vid, did notice a diff color of cordless drill. I’ve told a few framers i work around about your channel. They could learn from you.
Hey matt, just wanted to know how you get into frame carpentry. Im 22 years old and i have 2 years experience as an HVAC Installer, 1 year experience as Plumber, but my DREAM JOB is Frame carpentry. I want to get in but most companies that ive seen want people with experience in carpentry. Any tips on how i can get into a company ?
Hey i work as an apprentice carpenter and I have a question After setting the exterior bottom plates Why did you guys pinned pieces of timber along with bottom plates and the concrete (11:17)
Hey Matt, what do you call the piece of wood that you attach at 90 degrees to the plate, hanging down vertically on the side of the slab? Sorry for the naive question...UK viewer, where most walls are made of brick!
Hey Matt, I’m thinking about switching careers to become a union carpenter. Are you a union carpenter? Any advice for someone wanting to get into carpentry?
5:33 If you watch closely you can see when Matt hits his boot on that metal bar how he relaxes his ankle and doesn't react. This is super important. When you are on a job site just relax. When you freak out and you get all nervous and twitchy, that's when accidents are more likely to happen. Be smart, be safe.
Perhaps building codes are different in California, but shouldn't there be an insulator between the concrete foundation and the plating? Everything I've always been taught says that wood should never directly touch concrete. Over time the wood will wick moisture out of the concrete and cause the foundation to crumble and the wood to rot and/or mold.
Ive seen old builders just set the sill on the bolts and hit it with a hammer to put an indent in the wood.... is there a reason you dont do it this way?
He was just plating those walls. They probably put sill seal down before they stood the walls. Even if it's not required, it should be used. I built in socal for a long time, and most well designed wood structures use it these days.

Hey Matt, been following all the videos. great work, learning alot. My back couldnt do this work. Glad to c Q learning more.
I appreciate that you respond to many of the comment questions. Many don't.
I try to get to as many as possible. I don’t have a big head, I’ve always been a pretty humble down to earth fella. 😊
God I've been waiting for another build series! I'm pumped!
I love your videos bro I’m only 18 years old and I learn a lot from watching

Estoy aprendiendo mucho con tus vídeos
Gracias 😇
Oh and could you show us more on the plating tool you were using for the studs?
I second this
So you don’t have to use sill seal or a draft seal out west?
He will put it on after he is actually ready to stand walls. If you put it on too soon it will get torn or simply blow away.
No fox ?

Matt left a Amazon link in the description
Why do you nail the outside boards hanging over the outside of the concrete?
Diablo all the way) great content!
Did you make a video for the concreting, also I’m newly getting into construction work, any recommendations?
Lets get Q some boots to replace those Vans. Always be safe kid.
No moisture barrier or foam under the mud plate?
Hell yeah new build !!
Why are you always dressed for winter weather down in California 😂love the videos man keep it up
It’s cold! 50° is freezing to me. 🤪

How does the giveaway in pa work
Just wondering why you don't treat the inside of the holes you drill?
I'm from Northern Canada and our lumber would need it done.
Is your lumber treated all the way through?
No call for plate Seals in CA ?
He will after he builds the walls and ready to stand them. If he did it now they will tear or blow away...
Inspiring!
What's up Matt Ibe been trying to decide if going in to framing is a good Idea I'm currently a sheet metal installer and want to switch to something else. Is framing as cut and dry as it seems or is it a vast field ?
What is the requirements in this area? It looks like the foundation wall is uninsulated, so that there's a cold bridge straight into the foundation.
Hi,
Just a question, is there any requirement to have plate gasket between the sill and foundation?
What happened to fox mat
Great Video Matt, but why are some of the bottom plates offset by ~1"+ (i.e. outer red line) toward the inside of the building and yet other times in the video the bottom plate is flush with the concrete face?

what brand of circular saw are you using?
Why do you have two achor bolts at the end of each bottom plate? Why does one extend further above the concrete than the other? IS this required by CA code?
Hey Matt, why don’t you guys paint your PT cut ends on your sills? Thanks!
Is there a certain place you need to break your bottom and top plate or just anywhere in the middle when your plate isn't long enough for the wall?
4 feet apart is code between plate breaks
For bottom plate, we keep all plate lengths 4'+, try to break next to an anchor bolt, as you have to have anchor bolts on both sides of plate break (we'll use TITEN's on the side missing bolt). Hey Matt, what do you call the piece of wood that you attach at 90 degrees to the plate, hanging down vertically on the side of the slab? Sorry for the naive question...UK viewer, where most walls are made of brick!
It’s just the top plate for our wall, we want them like that so we can do our stud layout.
What does a framer get hourly out there? Or just a close price...
$25-35 depending on skill level.
@@MattBangsWood thanks for your feedback
Do the plumbers in Cali use cast iron for their underground or is that ABS plastic? Thanks Matt.
Hey Matt 😀🤙🇺🇸
Why no sill sealer?
Looks like a nice job Matt, roughly whereabouts is this build in california.
Where did you get those hats done? Do you have a website, they look nice.
Hey Matt,
I’m thinking about switching careers to become a union carpenter. Are you a union carpenter? Any advice for someone wanting to get into carpentry?
Non-Union. Call around, everyone hires! Right now with the pandemic in the US.. Might be hard though.
i wanna see the site slab prep, rough in utilities, septic or utility outlets

Sill plate gasket… not code in many areas but a really great idea. Most local codes require treated lumber.
Nice alien friend! :D
What kind/brand of tool belt is that?
I want to become a framer any tips man ? Currently I am a painter
Dude you are going to end up like me, deaf, not wearing earplugs. I like the long drill handle that saves you from a lot of excess bending over.
Out of curiosity do you guys just do the framing or are you building the whole house
We do concrete, framing and siding. On this build, we’re only framing. I’ll be timelapsing the process from there on out though.
@@MattBangsWood ok thanks
Do you guys not use sealant and/or sill sealer under your plates in California? Missouri minds want to know. Bang on!
trshuster yes we do only for apartments tho not houses
Not for small residential, I’ve seen it called on bigger stuff but it’s always just by whoever draws plans..
Not code here though.
.. only use sawdust under them by look of it 🤣🤔 best practice?
@@MattBangsWood weird, it's code here in WA
@@Ramdodge582 its not to code where im at eather
What is the 1/2" space from outside of slab to plate for?
Our shear panel is going to sit on top of it. 😊 That way wall runs down flush with outside of concrete.
Is that a common practice for siding? Or just a detail you guys like to add
