The myth began with an interview his father Errol gave to Business Insider South Africa in 2018, in which he relayed a story about once trading an old plane for some cash and a share in a Zambian emerald deposit.
But there were problems with the story:
      None of it was corroborated
The quantity of wealth that came from the supposed emerald flow was never quantified
The journalist suggested a direct link between the emeralds, the family’s overall wealth, and Elon’s later success
One of the resulting articles had a US headline that claimed the family still owned the mine (despite there never having been formal ownership, despite any emerald supply having died out some 30 years prior, and despite Elon and his father being quite famously estranged)
That story then mutated into a myth that grew to include the idea of apartheid or “blood emeralds”, despite Zambia (i) not being a conflict gem country, (ii) having been a regional ringleader of anti-apartheid activity at the time

I have a tremendous amount of regret, when it comes to Jordan Peterson. A few years back, I found him, I think through Joe Rogan, and I valued his point of view, not as someone who agreed with him, but as a way to hear from the other side that didn't seem so disingenuous or fear mongering. I recommended his videos to my father, who was already right leaning, as a sort of compromise to get him to watch other left-leaning commentators I also watched. Well, he took pretty strongly to Peterson, and now he quotes him all the time.
After consuming more of his content, or after his steps toward becoming more heavily entrenched in the Conservative pundit grift (I can't tell which I noticed first), I started to really wish I hadn't introduced my father to him. It became clear he wasn't so invested in impartiality so much as he was in creating the illusion of it.
Dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, and had seemingly beat it by 2018. Well, it resurfaced recently, and on Father's Day, he actually said to me "Y'know, I can't help but think this all came back a month after I got my vaccinations," and I admittedly didn't take that little philosophy well, and said he can't start thinking like that; that cancers take a much longer time to develop than a month, and he hit me back with "But they rushed those vaccines!"
I told him he can't believe everything he sees on Fox News, and he was like "I don't watch the news anymore! It only makes me mad! I don't even care who's president!"
Then I realized the source he relies most heavily on these days, other than the Bible, is Peterson. He has read all of his books, and voraciously consumes online his content.
Peterson has been instilling doubt in the medical profession for a while now, blaming them for his health woes. It's like blaming a building inspector for the crack in the foundation, but there's nothing I can say to convince Dad, it seems. He's in too deep. I used to think he was so smart and analytical.
    I hate Peterson for this.

It's weird to completely divorce social evils from "the evil inside oneself". To actively do good in the world is part of becoming a better person. You can't hide in your room for years saying "well, I can't help yet, I'm not cultivated enough, my life isn't together yet," that would be ridiculous. You go out and help and let others help you - and you improve yourself and the world all at once and that's how it works. ffs.

What annoys me the most about JP fans is the response "You didn't understand him" or "haven't read enough of his work". It shows an unfathomable degree of uneducated arrogance.
I'm finishing my bachelors degree soon, I'm a former JP fan and am WELL aware of what he says, and own one of his books. I've studied philosophy, politics and art history. It's VERY evident, even from introductory level philosophy, logic and politics that JP is either clueless or a liar, and his wordview is incoherent and fascistic. His opinions on these things are pure illiterate idiocy, and 0 academics even take him seriously because his takes are so damn bad.
JP thrives on two things. 1. He relies on an uneducated audience (on the topics he speeks on). People who have no clue what the naturalistic fallacy is, what marxism is, postmodernism is, what fascism is, how capitalism happened, who Hobbes or Umberto Eco is - people who don't know history or how to be critical of rhetoric.
    2. He rarely makes normative claims. He makes a few carefully selected, and often misrepresented or wrong, descriptive claims that heavily imply a conclusion. He rarely says the conclusion himself, but every listener will draw it by implication. When someone asks him "so you are saying (conclusion)?", he can be all offended and say that is not what he meant.
I know what Petersons message is. His message is that there is a great threat to western society, that can only be remedied by individuals ordering their own lives responsibily, and speak out against the threat, and remove the threat from power and influence in society. The threat, according to him, is the ideology of "post-modern neo-marxists" - a group of intellectuals who promote relativism, challanges traditional modes of life and wants to restructure society and destroy all (meritocratic and natural) hierarchies. ALL his claims point to this thesis. The lobster hierarchies, the (misrepresented) nietzchean opposition and distrust of virtually all things progressive, his love for religion, his fear of communism, his sympathetic analysis of nazi-germany, his takes on women and men. All of it paints his central thesis above. This is his worldview. He wants an orderly, traditional, christian, meritocratic capitalist society, where progressive voices are muted and only considered if they don't disturb the order. He's devoting himself to fighting progressivism. He fights and despised activists for climate, gay, trans, animal, black rights, calling them moralistic narcissists. He recently called trans people monstrosities, and makes unfounded claims about their outcomes that contradicts all avaliable science on them.
The dude is a textbook example of fascism. Simple as that. He fits the description perfectly. He is terrified of a non-existent bogeyman, because the bogeyman will challange the fragile order he has built his frail identity on. He is bitter, scared and deeply irrational.
Fascists want to restore or retain a traditional order in their respective society, which they justify by a mix of appeals to nature and mythical/religious prescription. Their main grievance is marxism and progressivism, which they think pervert and degrade societal order. They advocate for the removal of progressive intellectuals from positions of power and influence in society, that gay and trans people shouldn't be visibaly present in society. They obsess over the idea that every individual, through heroic willingness to fight, and traditional conformity, can be heroes, they obsess over masculinity, dicipline, ability for violence and domination (used correctly), and their movement is lead by a few charismatic, populistic personalities who "speaks common sense and says it like it is" for the disaffected people in society. This is JP to a t.
And this always leads to 1 conclusion. If the fascists percieve the threat from the "degenerate" progressives to be large enough, they are willing to "remove" the threat in lets say, violent ways.

Elliot. He is against the idea of most people participating in politics or attempting to change anything, unless they are very successful in several ways. This means, of course, that Peterson is fundamentally anti-democracy. He defends hierarchies because he thinks there should be a hierarchy to who gets to call for change.

That government should rule by the consent of the governed. It's a principle about freedom and civil rights and the basic value of every human. As a consequence, we can't have a level of meritocracy where the most competent become god-kings with absolute power. That would violate our principles of freedom and human rights. There's also the issue of how to define "merit" and who makes that decision. So we solve all of these problems at once by giving every citizen a stake in the government and a piece of that decision about who is most worthy of power. That's democracy. thats why I think its so important to have Vaush speaking about masculinity as well, the whole discourse about that should not be dominated by the right
I wish more people on the Left would talk about that topic though

@Dr Harold Shipman so much for the free speech advocacy of the right.

Im all for encouraging self improvement, my issues with that idea is that for a lot of people "self improvement" means telling people "stop doing this thing i personally don't like." Completely disregarding your personal enjoyment of that thing and/or its lack of any harm to others.

I think the idea of "selfimprovement" is toxic. It implies that you as a human are badically insufficient unless you do x or y.
I think it is a more healthy approach thinking in "developing skills", "developing helpful routines" etc.
Overall a mindset, that is accepting of who you are, and not asks how you get "better" but what skills or helps do you need to live the life you want to live.

@@hannajung7512 I think self improvement is good but it has to be for yourself and because of yourself. Don't do it, trying to appease someone else because you can't please everyone. Just be the best version of yourself you can be.

@@kap1618 I think that the simply idea of a necessity to "improve" is toxic. No matter for whome you are doing it.
I think it is better to strife for your best life... And to try learn the skills you need to this.
The simple idea that someone is not good enough as a person and needs to improve is in a way selfharming. Framing it as skill development is healthier.

Honestly just want to see someone tell Peterson to follow his own advice and speak clearly for once in his word-salad life. He speaks like a first year uni student trying to make their essay long enough on a topic they don't actually understand in any depth

Why hasn’t anyone brought up frogs to Peterson? He seems perfectly willing to use the way lobsters behave to justify certain human behaviors, but completely neglects to mention that some frogs can change their sex because it would be inconvenient as applied to his views on trans people.

Name me one human who could change their sex naturally and reproduce afterwards. Frogs can only change sex during their tadpole phase.

So you’re saying animals are completely analogous to animals? Thanks. That was my exact point.

@@michaeltorris5675 No I'm saying humans can't change their sex like frogs are able to. It's a completely different factor to make an analogy to the biology/neurochemistry system regulated by serotonin which does play a role in social hierarchies of both humans and animals, that includes lobsters. Tried to link ncbi Neural mechanisms of social dominance study but youtube deletes the comment. Unless you can speak frog, afaik frogs do not switch their sexes because they experience gender dysphoria.

Right. Kind of how lobsters are so different than humans that there is zero point in looking to the way they they organize into hierarchies to explain and/or justify certain hierarchies that exist in human society. Again, thank you for making my point.
