As they say, all good stories involve pirates. Thank you for teaching me more of the history behind this legendary figure, and more of the legend behind his history.
The way I heard it, Maynard was fighting Blackbeard one on one when one of his sailors stabbed Blackbeard in the back. Maynard then chewed that sailor out for either stealing his kill or interrupting a pari of gentlemen fundamentally disagreeing wit one another.
I recall reading something similar. In one of his memoirs Maynard took credit for killing Blackbeard in single combat (Highly Embellished)- he claimed that each time blackbeard was stabbed or cut he became more and more furious. in the version that I read Maynard took credit for killing blackbeard in unassisted 1v1. I also recall a footnote saying that historians doubt Maynard's personal account.
Something interesting about the battle between Maynard and Blackbeard is that despite having more men on their sides, the pirate-hunters had no cannons! Yet in Maynard's account he says that the reason Blackbeard couldn't sail away is that the pirate-hunters managed to shoot away the jib and fore-halliards of the pirate sloop. To accomplish this with just muskets and pistols Maynard must have been incredibly lucky!

Hello Simon. Love your work. Listening to this while i do mine is both treat and a delight. Love as i do this tale of Blackbeard, you sadly didnt mention my favorite exploit of his. Namely what happened after he abandoned the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Or at least a legend of it. While it is true that Blackbeard did so to split up his crew of hundreds, how he did so was absolute barbarism With only two full sloops remaining of his fleet, there was precious few room to carry both the crew of the Queen Anne and the Treasure Hoard it carried. A choice was made between the two and Blackbeard chose what was appropriate to his style. He took the treasure and marooned the rest. Sailing away with the treasure hoard while leaving hundreds behind to starve and rot. A devil in the flesh and died as one. Defiant against all. A true pirate.
Great video! Interestingly enough, I went to high school in SC...one of my classmates was a descendent of Blackbeard...in my biology class where the teacher was a descendant of the captain who captured/killed Blackbeard, Cpt Maynard in NC. I waited for their inevitable fight-to-the-death.
Coming from VA living in SC I have a few things to add Blackbeard's head was put on a pike near the then Virginia Capital on one of the Wharf. Second having sailed the area where the 2 ships were lost, it either had to be an incompetent helmsman or intentional. The only other possible reason would be contrary winds to the current. Blackbeard was to good to try such a maneuver in those conditions 3 Having been out in Charlestown Harbor (Charles Town) 5 ships could have easily held the town hostage. It isn't that wide at the mouth making it an excellent port with many barrier islands which makes for an excellent anchorage.

To anyone who is interested in Blackbeard and beach vacations to a small town. Beaufort North Carolina is rich in black beard history. The Hammock House is the house that he would visit after conquests/pillages. This town is near the outer banks of North Carolina. There are some haunted stories around the town about Blackbeard, if you’re interested in things like that.

Love as i do this tale of Blackbeard, you sadly didnt mention my favorite exploit of his. Namely what happened after he abandoned the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Or at least a legend of it. While it is true that Blackbeard did so to split up his crew of hundreds, how he did so was absolute barbarism
With only two full sloops remaining of his fleet, there was precious few room to carry both the crew of the Queen Anne and the Treasure Hoard it carried.
Blackbeard was to good to try such a maneuver in those conditions
3 Having been out in Charlestown Harbor (Charles Town) 5 ships could have easily held the town hostage. It isn't that wide at the mouth making it an excellent port with many barrier islands which makes for an excellent anchorage.
I remember Blackbeard being like a childhood hero of mine 😂 already at the age of 5 I understood his badassery
Thank y’all for sharing this! I’m new to this channel. I love pirates I find them interesting and so much to learn about them so thank y’all for sharing Blackbeard!
Great episode! Would ever consider doing biographies of other naval leaders such as Zheng He or William Bligh, or even one of the Viking explorers such as Erik the Red?
To anyone who is interested in Blackbeard and beach vacations to a small town. Beaufort North Carolina is rich in black beard history. The Hammock House is the house that he would visit after conquests/pillages. This town is near the outer banks of North Carolina.
There are some haunted stories around the town about Blackbeard, if you’re interested in things like that.

Good lord. How many advertisements do they need in a 20 minute video. I had three plus the plug for Curiosity Stream. Hope you made lots of money off of it.

Have you ever thought of doing a full 1hr or so biography, similar to a history channel life of? Your voice is easily to listen to giving a cathartic feeling to the information yet very exciting. Anyway, just a thought, love the channel
'the french offered little resistance' - theres a surprise...
The US is Good a
At fighting the French are good at laying down and giving up hey do what your good at
Yeah those battles at verdun and the Somme were a such a joke
@@FRDOMFGTHR yeah the French have been on a losing streak since Waterloo
@@haydenpayne3465 yeah well you guys have been on a loosing streak since world War 2. France is still the nation with the most victories through history. Maybe Americans are bad at documenting themselves as well? Stick to what you are good at i guess :).
Bisous sur vous mes lardons, merci pour le cola et les jeans hahahaha.
@@FckUhatersbhindyrpc this is true we are a younger. Nation but weve saved france 2 times and the marquee and French forgin legion. Are. Very. Good at there job. My personal. Opinion is. That the seals rangers marsoc and SAS are the top 4. France can fight but I don't think there the best no offense intended
This dudes the best on this channel
I liked the mention of the fuses Blackbeard would light, but I have heard they weren't JUST under his hat, he also was supposed to have tied them to his long beard as well. While it was purely theatrical, and it would potentially lead to a singed beard, I imagine it wouldn't have bothered him very much, as I doubt he looked exceedingly well-kempt
This was such an amazing channel.... RIP. Luckily Simon's videos are here still. ^^
Hell yea, Blackbeard! Captain Sir Henry Morgan Biographics when?! :D
Blackbeard was a beast.
I just started our flag means death and saw this. Still relevant
Finally! Biographics actually listened
Cool video. I live about an hour from Ocracoke North Carolina, where he had his home base, and about 10 minutes from Beaufort where he had a house, and we're Queen Anne's Revenge sank. This story hits close to home, literally! Thank you Simon.
I live in Beaufort and cant believe i never saw this til now.
Great video, thanks again Simon 🖖
THE PIGTAILS FROM OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH ARE HISTORICALLY ACCURATE???????????
Blackbeard could read and write, I have heard about him, A legendary Pirate, like you stated! I also read that b4 they were Pirates that after all of the wars they were screwed over by the countries they fought for, and , became Pirates, but, who really knows? Another superb docuvideo, thanks!!
He appears in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Very well-portrayed, must I say.
