"Charles Cross" - not his real name - is by far the most likely candidate. The guy was found at the scene, having "discovered" the body, just moments after a murder occured, gave a false name to police, and tried to give them the slip. He also lived in and around the area where the murders took place; his route to work took him right through some of those very places. He also used to live right in the epicentre of the suspected area where the murderer was thought to have lived, by modern methods of figuring out a catchment area based upon where each murder took place. Wasn't he also a butcher by trade? So he wouldn't have attracted much attention wearing blood stained clothing.
There is no evidence that Cross was the Ripper.
JSkillz the most likely suspect to me is Jospeh Barnett who lived with Mary Kelly, did not like prostitution, tried to get her off the streets and a huge fight with her 10 days before her death
Y’all are wrong. It was groot.
Agreed.[see my comment above]
@Gary DeBlasio He ment "groot" from his favorite marvel movie because hes 12. Very fascinating work man. I believe that one of these suspects is indeed the killer too. Probably the guy who hated prostitutes. Or theyre all wrong and was someone in between all of these people. Someone so plain, and relatable that they would never be seen as such. As for why he stopped killing, he probably got caught locally but whoever caught him either died and was assumed killed by other people. Then the ripper split, or the man who caught him didn't realize what he caught and jack split. Not having enough evidence for a clear conviction in those times would be hard. Maybe it was a super natural force as well. Such a curious case that will never be solved.
I mean, Jack had it bad from the start. What kind of parents would give their son Jack a middle name like "The" when they know their last name is already "Ripper".

I hope jack the ripper would be caught if he acted these crimes in modern times. Its crazy how hard investigative work was back then
It be nice if could kept stuff or test now and find who was but yeah not all is found out
Another thing that caused problems was two police forces that wouldn't work together and withheld information from each other
It took them years to capture the Yorkshire ripper in the 1960s to 1970s, much of it due to the same police stubbornness & incompetence that marked the Ripper investigation nearly a century before.
They low-key needed a real Sherlock Holmes
Well, in those days, there was no DNA profiling, no CCTV cameras, and even fingerprinting wasn't available until the 20th century so the police had to rely on visual clues when investigating a crime scene.

I'm less interested in the identity of Jack, what I want to know is the mind behind it all. What was he like? What drove him to kill and mutilate in the way that he did? What did he think of it all? To me, those details are infinitely more fascinating than being able to put a name to the killings. It's a shame we'll never know.
I think the curiosity of the mind of a killer is one of reasons why True Crime is so intriguing and popular. A lot of the time, these people seem other worldly, especially in cases like Jack The Ripper and the Zodiac Killer.
Most of the people he killed were prostitutes maybe he thought he had to remove the evil work of the devil or something like that
I love this guys videos so interesting. Although some are kinda hard to keep ya lunch down.
Loved the video. And the fact that they never could find Jack, adds to it's thrill. And by the way it is not so uncommon for the serial killers to never be captured or identified. Normally a psychopath is really good at hiding his true nature. They live, study, and work among us without us having any clue about their reality. Great video, thank you for all the efforts.
Sepehr Jalali moghaddam wasß is
Most of them were medical students
There's a good chance that the BTK killer would've remained free had he not felt compelled to keep killing and taunting law enforcement, but I guess that's why they're serial killers to begin with. The ones that can actively control their murderous urges, pathological need for attention and praise are almost impossible to capture.
Honestly, I'm even more interested in that torso murderer that was mentioned. I wonder why Jack the Ripper rose to such to prominence, but nobody ever mentions the torso killings that were going on at the same time. I guess there's just not much to go on there, since almost none of the torso victims were identified. That's really sad.
Jack the Ripper has cooler name :). I remember when I was younger, Jack the ripper was basically synonym for serial killer and I was sure that that is because he was one of the biggest one and later when I discovered that he "only" killed 6 people, I was kind of disappointed. I mean, some of serial killers killed a lot more, at least those that we know of.
Brazenness would be my guess. The Torso victims were dismembered and their remains were dispersed to different locations for disposal. This is grisly, but also practical. The victims were also discovered over the course of ~2 years, increasing the possibility that some or all of the incidents were unrelated. The most notable things about the Ripper murders is the choice in victim (vulnerable woman who themselves provided the means of access) and the brutality of the assaults.
Thanks Simon. Yep I've read a lot about Jack over the years. My Scottish Grand Mother talked about how his notoriety still scared people when she was a girl. (and She was born when he started his spree . ) I think that is why I find it interesting.

@@strongside4565 While I agree he wasn't the Ripper, there is some evidence from his youth and in the twilight of his career where he did some low key face to face. But by and large, he preferred poisons and so forth. But linking him to the White Chapel Murders is merely trying to tie a nice bow on it to make money. I think Kosminski is a top suspect, if obvious.Though the Australian has some merit since record keeping in the Victorian age was iffy at best. He was an unusual killer. Most had more of a cooling off period. Clearly, it was about mutilation, not torture. He seemed to have a rage for women as well. The genitalia, the breasts, the face were all targeted, as if he wanted to erase their womanhood. The scariest part? You would not have felt threatened by him, he would not have stood out. He had a good reason for being out at night, he was someone nobody would look twice at. He was not an outsider in the east end. Even when women knew there was a killer, they still went with him into dark alleys. In my opinion, jack the ripper was almost certainly male. Psychologically, female serial killers tend to be based on some kind of material gain, and they also use less personal and bloody ways of killing. A woman could certainly have had the knowledge required, but it is unlikely.
Back then, people didn't think a woman could kill in such a horrific fashion but its still possible JTR could have been a woman since a neighbor of the last victim claimed she saw her just hours after the victim was supposedly murdered so its possible a female killer could have donned her clothes and fled the scene of the crime. In those days, any woman can claim to be a midwife, go out in public with bloody clothes, and nobody would think anything of it. A female abortionist would also have knowledge of female anatomy to remove organs like JTR did and a woman whose husband cheated on her with prostitutes would have had a sound motive for murdering them. People also tend to relax their guard around women then they would with men as well.
@@Elly3981 omg, that could be a possibility.
Oh yes? Point to the exact location of your kidneys right now
of course it's a man, why is this even up for debate
Likely a nicely dressed yet unassuming individual then, but there is a problem with this... London at the time was the largest city in the world (pop. wise anyway) and I don't think ANYONE stood out in particular except for very rare cases. If you've ever lived in a city you'll know what I mean... Anonymity in the masses
John Douglas(fbi profiler and author of mindhunter) actually covered this case in depth in his book cases that haunt us. Originally he thought jack was kosmimski or someone similar to him. He fit the profile perfectly. But after finding out he was still alive after the murders stopped (living out his days in mental asylums). He ruled him out as his prime suspect. Who then became David Cohen(or someone like him). A near identical profile that just fit the mold better than Kosminsky.
A big thumbs up! That was thoroughly terrifying, and you did a great job painting a gruesome word picture!
In the streets of London, a tale unfolds,
Of a criminal enigma, whose story still holds,
Jack the Ripper, infamous and grim,
His reign of terror, a nightmare within.
Mary Ann Nichols, the first to fall,
Her life stolen away on Buck's Row's gall,
Strangled and slashed, a brutal sight,
The curtain was raised on this haunting night.
Annie Chapman, a week had passed,
In Hanbury Street, her breath did last,
Abdominal mutilations, surgical precision,
The Ripper's knowledge fueled suspicion.
Elizabeth Stride, the same night's toll,
In Dutfield's Yard, her fate took its hold,
Her throat slit, but a different scene,
Interrupted plans, an unsolved scheme.
Catherine Eddowes, an hour's span,
Mitre Square witnessed horror's brand,
Throat slashed, abdomen torn wide,
Her kidney stolen, panic multiplied.
Mary Jane Kelly, the final victim's name,
In Miller's Court, darkness claimed,
Mutilation unmatched, a scene of dread,
The Ripper's masterpiece, souls left for dead.
Inspector Frederick Abberline, relentless in his quest,
To unmask the killer, put the city at rest,
With H Division, he pursued the trace,
But Jack's true identity, still a secret encased.
Through harrowing details, victims and their plight,
London's streets haunted, engulfed in fright,
Each murder etched in memory's strain,
Forever linked to Jack the Ripper's reign.
And so, we ponder with a shudder and a sigh,
The motivations and secrets that lie,
Behind these heinous acts, their dark allure,
Jack the Ripper, an enigma to endure.
The fact that we will probably never know who Jack the Ripper was makes him an even more fascinating figure. The only person who knows who Jack is is the killer himself, and he’s long dead.
Charles Allen Lechmere/Charles Cross was JTR. See "JTR:The Missing Evidence" for more info. QC James Scobie agrees the evidence collected is strong enough to go to the modern court (there are more resources on Charles Lechmere, but this is obv an excellent starting point).
@@thesorrow88 And yet you have written the statement with absolute certainty.
Good Christ the last murder was gruesome. Goodness. Overkill much Jack? Makes me shiver a bit when watching this.
there are some who consider the brutality of the murder to claim Jack was her boyfriend who hated that she was a prostitute. And that the other four were a smokescreen for him. I don't buy it, but it is plausible.
But yes... how any creature much less a human being, can do that to another is sickening.
It was about as bad as it could possibly get. Thankfully, the woman was dead before her body was mutilated in this way. The carnage was gruesome, but she didn't suffer because of it. (That's my understanding, at least. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.)
Mark O No she died quickly of a slashed throat, although the way her body was dissected and taken apart like something in a butcher’s shop is no less horrific.
@@cha5 I agree. Whoever did this had extremely severe psychological problems. I find it incredibly sad to think about a person being in such a diseased, twisted state so as to be capable of doing something like this.
But I think it is a great blessing that this woman died quickly and had no experience of the grisly mutilation that her body was subjected to. The only person who had any experience of that atrocity was "Jack".
They didn't show her face, thankfully. Then again, there was no face. It legit got hacked to the point it was pretty much just a skull with no visible features of what used to be a face.

You brought up a good point, in reference to those possible Ripper victims who fall outside of “The Canonical Five”; that because Martha Tabram’s throat wasn’t cut like the other victims afterwards, that she’s been excluded by many as being a victim of JTR...
But I agree that it’s entirely possible that Tabram was The Ripper’s first victim, and that he didn’t cut her throat because at that point, just killing her was enough to excite him. He may not have been sure early on about how he would play out his deranged murder fantasies.
But as he continued to kill, the murderer evolved in the ferocity of the damage he did, and he found that what once excited him in the beginning, no longer did as time went on... and that he had to grow more savage with each subsequent victim, in order to feel any excitement from doing them.
Basically, what got him off at first eventually didn’t anymore, so he had to keep taking it further each time. This would ultimately lead to the most savage of his killings, with his complete ravaging and tearing apart of Mary Kelly, who was the most torn up and disfigured. Kelly is also considered to be the only victim who’s murder occurred in a private residence, so the murderer had plenty of time to relax, be methodical, and take his time, acting out his ultimate violent fantasy and prolonging the event, without the risk of being caught by a passerby, or by the police.
You're absolutely right. Serial killers also continue to kill until they die or are caught. Whoever JTR was, he was highly intelligent as well as mentally ill and sadistic, a dangerous combination. I also believe that he was someone who was good at getting women to trust and let their guards down around him too since none of his victims ever got the chance to scream or defend themselves before he murdered them.

Along with the DNA Lab - and accordingly, the validity of the tests on the alleged DNA on the shawl coming under serious doubt, Sotheby’s of London had their antique clothing/fashion experts examine the fabric, and their conclusion was that not only was the fabric and pattern of the shawl NOT designed until well into the 20th Century, it was also said that even if the shawl had existed in the 1880’s, it would have been a very expensive shawl, and no one in the East End would have ever had the money to buy it. A years after Jack the Ripper murders. A few eerily similar murders happened in New York. I had that someone I don't remember who, said the killer might have been sailor who's ship had stopped in London just long enough for the killer to do his thing. Then when it was time to set sail again, he simply got back on the ship and moved on. Possibly to New York. Where he killed again. The killer could have a hundred victims all over the world if that's the case.
I mean think about, if you were murdering psychopath with weird fetish for cutting people up. And it's pretty obvious that you like it too much to want to stop. What would be the best profession for you, that would allow you to keep killing while staying on the move?
At the same time imagine being on top of other sailors on that ship. Having to travel long distances with this maniac. I'd imagine someone like Jack the Ripper wouldn't be the most friendly person on the planet. He was probably a total asshole, especially when after not having his fix of blood and guts starts getting to him.

The most interesting theory of Jacks identity I have heard is H.H Holmes. The theory states that he was capable of the violence and had the intelligence for anatomical knowledge and apparently his documented travels to England and back to the U.S line up with the murders.
Yes i heard that too, he is a very plausible suspect. But it would be a long shot but truth is stranger than fiction.
It is an interesting theory but highly unlikely, Jack was never caught because there was no connection between him and his victims. HH was caught because he knew most of his victims personally tried to swindle money from them before killing them and was eventually caught because of a bad insurance fraud scheme that went wrong. I just think the two killers are so dissimilar that they can't be the same person.
Holmes can be placed in the US during the Ripper murders. The whole thing about records of his travels to England is bs because he was in Chicago working and building his murder castle during the Ripper murders. Records like marriage, birth (of his daughter), dozens of lawsuits for non payment of his murder castle and his other scams, and other examples all place him in Chicago between the mid 1880s and early 1890s when the Ripper murders occurred thousands of miles away in London. Needless to say, he couldn’t travel back and forth to be in two places at once when the only way to cross the Atlantic back then was a weeks long trip by ship.
@@maelstrom2594 I also heared of the theory that H.H Holmes was also Jack the Ripper and he did have the medical background.. the one thing that maybe him being Jack the Ripper was the fact he was in England and White Chapel at the same time Jack the Ripper was doing his killing he arrived a couple months before the killings started and once it ended H.H Holmes had left and went back to America that alone makes him a suspect.
@Flicks I said it was a Theory I never said it was true.
I'm so in love with this man's voice!!! True Crime and Simon.....oh yeah ... perfect combination!
Check out his channel The Casual Criminalist!
I remember watching a documentary on this on Discovery channel when I was in 5th grade. I couldn't sleep that night.
Interesting fact: Even today the graves of Polly Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly all have flowers left at them, 130 years on they aren't forgotten
Simon, You are truly a superb presenter
We truly need the help of the "Scoobt-Doo Gang" on this one. I just don't believe we are going to solve it without their help. I've got a feeling that it's Old Man Jenkins..
Vincero, the ripper's watch XD
I know right!
Get ripped off with Vincero watches! Don't forget to use the code JACKOFF10 for 10% off your entire order.
Please do Cecil John Rhodes. Thanks for your fantastic presentation always
His fight against Heracles was the best so far imo
His greatest kill yet.
Rest in peace to those that passed away.
You got to do a bio on the Zodiac Killer.
The zodiac killer lived in my hometown of Vallejo California while my mom was a kid. She told me that during that time she wasn't allowed to go anywhere alone or not too far from the neighborhood.
I can only imagine the terror of running to your friend's house thinking the killer might be watching...
@@carriemaxwell4695 I grew up in Ventura & have always been fascinated with him, mostly because we're never gonna know who Jack was, but we still have a chance to solve the Zodiac killings
Everyone and their brother has done that one.
Yeah but Ted Cruz is still alive
It was Kevin Spacey playing Ted Cruz in the film Seven.
Now this is the kind of lunchtime information I crave.
He was believed to be a doctor only because of how popular the Doc Jekyll and Mr Hyde play was at the time. I really think Mick Priestley cracked it, it was Albert Bachert
I wish there had been a disclaimer at the beginning of the video about the pictures, and how the story is not for the faint of heart or stomach.
There's a Ripper Walk guided tour about 20 minute walk from my home. Plus the 10 Bells pub, where the ladies would go is a short walk away.
Cool! If I ever visited the UK, I'd rather do that tour than Windsor Castle.
I did the walking tour led by a beefeater when I was there and it starts at dusk and ends in the dark and was one of the best experiences I've had abroad. So amazing to walk the actual streets and follow his path.
really want you to also cover Zodiac as well since your covering Jack who was also never caught
Out of all the videos I’ve watched, this one scared me the most.
Did a walk through the Jack The Ripper display in Madame Tousault’s wax museum in London in 1983. Chilling, extremely realistic experience. Glad I had the insight to do so. Inspiring, not to follow suit, but to appreciate the crimes of the horror that haunted White Chapel in 1888. The Johnny Depp movie, From Hell, presents a thought provoking, alternative view of the Ripper saga.
I love the Masonic theory involving the Royal Family. It makes sense in some ways, but there are holes in it. But it makes for a great story, i really enjoyed From Hell, even the movie.
The same theory was used in the Sherlock Holmes movie Murder By Decree and the 1988 TV movie Jack the Ripper (which also featured Inspector Abberline, here played by Sir Michael Caine).
I enjoy the 90's movie with Gabrielle Anwar called Ripper.
William Blackfyre sq
I loved the Alan Moore/Eddie Campbell graphic novel From Hell.
@@RachelG1979 I absolutely love her! I'll check that one out. Thanks.
Have you done a video about Harriet Tubman? Or Queen Liliuokalani?
The standard of guilt isn't beyond a showdown of a doubt.
It's beyond a REASONABLE doubt.
Earns a sub nice channel
02:50 Charles Cross is actually a very viable candidate for being the ripper. There’s a documentary on him. It’s quite detailed & outlines a believable & probable case against him. Even shows his portrait picture taken later in life. aka Mr Charles Allen Lechmere.
One suspect was hanged for a ripper style murder in Australia one was electrocuted in Sing Sing for several ripper style murders.Charles Lechtmere AKA Charles Cross was a meat market employee who often walked to work at 3 am. He was caught with a body (claiming to have discovered the body) all murders were in areas he knew like the back on his hand, and Mary Kellys flat was along his meat route.
There are also wild theories tying Jack to Texas's 'Servant Girl Annihilator' who is probably worth their own video
It's definitely worth a documentary of its own.
Simon Whistler is someone I can listen narrating about anything and I still would enjoy it
For a cliff notes version on Jack I recommend Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's "From Hell". References to all theories in the graphic novel are explained in the detailed and thorough appendices. And the book is also the best and most fun way of learning about London's history and city design.
