  • Topline muscle development of the horse is vital for the horse to be able to carry its rider correctly and easily. In order to develop a strong topline muscle, make sure to always engage your horse's back while riding at all gaits. "Tracking up" is a good measure of how things are progressing with the topline muscle development of your horse. Allowing the horse to stretch while riding and doing hill work and pole work will also help to develop your horse's topline. A good way to check your horse's topline is to check for shallowness in his back in the area right behind where the saddle sits. A good topline muscle development means the horse is being ridden correctly from back to front and is always engaging his back while being ridden.
    This video explains the topline muscle development of the horse and why it is important. Examples of what good and bad topline muscle development of horses look like are included in this video. Causes of topline muscle development in horses that aren't the best are explained in this video. This video explains what causes poor topline muscle development of horses and what training exercises can help prevent it.

    Honestly this really helps me out! I've just taken in a 3yo TB to train for a family member, and he desperately needs some topline built up. They want me to train him to ride, but I want his back to strengthen a bit more before I attempt anything. He's completely different than my Appaloosa, who has a more stock type build and doesn't need any help building muscle lol

    I got my horse for free, given to me by the person who taught me how to ride and continues to teach me. He sat in pasture for 6 months before I got him and he’s been back in work for 4 months now, I have been trying so hard to get his top line to look good, he’s on a supplement for muscle growth and just all around health. I have been lunging him every day and riding him just once a week. I lunge over poles, back him, and even go up and down hills frequently with him. I see no difference in his top line through all of this. He’s got pretty sunken in withers and has a little bit of a bump on the top of his butt. I know he can improve but I feel like nothing I have been doing is helping.

    I have a quarter horse and his go to trot is sort of a cowboy jog. My instructor encourages us do the big stretching down trot. The horsemanship online instructions I watch don’t seem to go there and still trot quit slowly. Is u it t natural for a QH to move this way?

    Nice video. Could you address other work in hand in addition to poles and hill work for top line. I have a young Warlander 3yrs not broke to ride who has a telescopic head and neck and a short choppy trot. Would like her to step underneath herself more. Could you show some ground pole patterns. Thanks in advance. Love watching you use a rope halter!

      Thanks for watching! An upright neck can be tricky to handle. I have a very upright saddlebred/Arabian horse in my training program right now so i am familiar with this struggle. Most horses that are very upright can easily develop a ewe neck (check out my video on this subject: ua-cam.com/video/yM86cwYSRC4/v-deo.html )
      It’s going to be important that your Warlander learns how to travel with a high back and relaxed, lower neck after she is started under saddle. A skilled rider can achieve this but it can be tricky. Lifting her back and riding her from back to front will lengthen her strides and decrease her desire to develop that under neck muscle (see my video on this subject: ua-cam.com/video/9_PCv6wU_iE/v-deo.html )
      As an unstarted 3 year old though, it’s just important to keep things pretty light and fun. You could also consider some light lunging with long side reins to help show her the way. I will work on putting together a video that goes into more detail on this subject. Don’t be discouraged about her upright neck, the goals you mentioned can certainly be achieved!

    some horses also develop a hunters bump from ill fitting saddles. if the horses croop is relatively flat, it is also indicative of back/psoas pain.

      your welcome. most horses have tipped pelvises due to psoas pain. in dressage and jumping, they use that part of their back so much, it can over strain. daily check your horses, and run your fingers down their spine. if they flinch, get a chiropractor out, or learn the massage and chiro treatments for yourself. i find i have to do that at least once a week or so, even when i am a saddle maker/fitter, and trainer myself. good stuff to watch. its the first thing i see go out on all horses. eventually after prolonged issues they can get a twisted vertibre, and develop kissing spines. its a real issue we all face as horsemen. thanks for your video. because of dedicated horsemen trying to get the truth out there, we are making a difference. so thanks for doing that.

    Seems like the inset photos were of slightly underweight horses which would, of course, show a kind of hollowed out look of the hind end so I'm not clear about this top line thing.

    • @singularity613
      @singularity613 2 роки тому

      @@roisinc8299 8 months late, but if he's very tense, is there a way you can help him relax at all? Like take him on calm trail rides or pony him around from another horse. That way he doesn't have to work hard every time he sees you and can learn to enjoy being ridden. And I know a lot of people frown on treats, but have you tried treat-led stretching? like getting him to lower his head to stretch, bring his head between his front legs, etc.
      I'd also have his back checked out by a vet/chiropractor! He may be experiencing some pain or stiffness and may not be able to stretch at the moment.

    How for a horse to have a big round butt?

  • @rhythmandblues_alibi
    @rhythmandblues_alibi Рік тому

    Ok but a lot of the examples of poor topping development were actually underweight or unfit in general. I think in my case it would be more valuable to see examples of horses that have plenty of condition but are undermuscled. I think with the examples you have it's easy for people to mistake a fat horse as having good topline, where it is fat rather than muscle.
