- This week we look at locations of handles which needed a hand to not be completely off, and a special treat we're interviewing Inkscape contributor Ishaan (pulsar17.me/) and talk about the way he's improving the next version of Inkscape's visual appearance.

Yay! UX/UI expertise in open source software! Really that's the only difference between commercial and open source, are standards and UX/UI finesse.

CMYK e PDF X1A fará o inkscape substituir facil o coreldraw e até o ilustrator pra muita gente. prioridade essa funções.
Inkscape é a melhor opção pra Linux, quando Windows 11 for obrigatório muita gente vai mudar
FreeCAD highlights selected geometry (lines , vertices , surfaces etc)
I think it was AutoCAD that used to (maybe still does) selection drag right is window and selection drag left is crossing. It always seemed super intuitive, and I've always been surprised I haven't seen more of that.
Kicad does the same. I'm not sure how intuitive it would be for beginner users, but as an option it definitely would make sense, I think

This is also the way MOI3D works : for a selection rectangle performed from from left to right, objects need to be fully emcompassed to be selected. For a selection rectangle performed from right to left, objects only need to be touched. I suppose that this is quite widespread in the CAD world.

The touch select should be a dashed green line though to feel familiar for me. i think that is what autodesk and maybe some other CAD softwares do. Many cad softwares also helpfully switch modes depending on if you drag the rectangle from top left, or if you start the rectangle from bottom right.
I've been using Inkscape for 10 years or so. I love it, and have been telling people all these years to use it instead the adobe product. I've told people in my lectures about it as well. Thank you for all the work you do!
I'd love a "dark mode". I've developed a harsh sensitivity to light, and while I've come up with work arounds to help, none are as good as a genuine dark mode. In the video his inkscape has a "dark mode" kind of look. How do I do that? Despite all these years of using it, I'm guessing there are still many things I must still not understand. I'm an artist, so I tend to not pick up on anything too technical.
There's a themes option when you first start inkscape which allows you to select dark mode, if you can't get back to the start screen, don't worry go to the preferences and go to theme, there's a dark mode setting there.

I do like the ability to customize the colors of the selection boxes, though I know nothing about CSS, but it would be nice if there was a simple way (in the menus) to turn off the selection box shading if you don't want it (I would prefer it without). If I missed something about that, my apologies. Great work on making Inkscape look and work nicely! :)

Thank you so much for all your work... please an we have more keyboard support.. basic stuff like executing extension with keyboard shortcut.. or navigate through the file list on splash screen with up-down arrow keys?
You can add a keyboard shortcut for any extension in the preferences.

Thank you for this interesting development update. I am a relatively recent Inkscape user and it has proven extremely useful already.
A side remark about selection modes in Inkscape : it would be great to have the option to have the software be in "Outline" or "Outline Overlay" visual mode while still having selection behave like in "Normal" mode - meaning being able to select objects by interacting with their surface, as opposed to having to precisely click on their thin outline. Hence decoupling visual mode from selection behavior, somehow.
On an unrelated note : I would love to get some UI tweaks/quality of life improvements done to Inkscape specifically for my personal needs (paid of course). Is there an email one can get in touch with you at for this ?
you can contact me at doctormo at gmail, the issue about selecting in outline mode is likely a bug. I certainly sounds like one.

Regarding selection in Outline mode : there are certainly some ambiguous cases for which having to click on the the thin contour of an object might be preferable (specifically : when zooming way in on an object, there is no way to know which side of a line is indeed the surface of an object and which side isn't, therefore it would be improper to assume that the user knows). But in the case of Outline Overlay there is no ambiguity, therefore it seems counter-intuitive to me that surfaces aren't selectable/clickable in this mode.

7:30 still unfortunately no proper enclosed lasso, and still no pre-selection highlight so I can get real-time feedback on what will actually get selected… 😕 it would also be nice if crossing/inside modes had visible toggles in the UI and not just hidden shortcuts… (The rectangles are also near useless when many objects overlap and have weird shapes… a blue silhouetted outline would be more usable.)

Also there's a crossing option in the selectors toolbar.
@@doctormo Ah, yes, sorry I still don't use Inkscape a lot and confused the "crossing" option with the actual box selection tool (because that's what the icon looks like).

Please change this or tell me how work around this... Let's say I have a group of several objects and I copy one of them and paste it in elsewhere in the document it will automatically be a member of the old group. I feel like this is the wrong default behavior. If I copy an entire group and paste then the new pasted objects should be grouped together, but not together with the copied objects.
It depends if you "enter" the group or just select the single item in it. There may also be bugs.
I need something like MS Word tables in Inkscape...

@@doctormo You know how tables works in MSWord? You can set borders and align in cells...
@@amigaworkbench720 Yes, but what is inside the cells? Or do you mean just the construct itself, no contents?
@@doctormo Basically "table builder" object, where you set number of rows and columns
and then you can place text objects or images inside cells with option to be vertically
and horizontally aligned. Also with option to set borders to targeted cells or
whole table object.
Having this would also be great for making PDF documents, brochures or magazines.
Inkscape UI needs some refinement.
You can use icons like Affinity ( If its not a lot of work 😅 )
And what software do you use to design demo layout of UI ?
There is also a FOSS called Pen-pot that is alternative to figma.
Currently the way I can support Inkscape is by word of mouth.
And In future if possible I would like to contribute to Inkscape Website.
I believe it is called PenPot, not InkPot

@@SmileyJack. Agree, on a laptop I had to go near the screen to see what particular icon do.
Icon colors kind of blend in background color with only white outline.
I prefer using variable Colors and more bold icons.
Affinity designer is a perfect example of this.
Though I never used it but when ever I see a vdo tut of it.
I like the UI.
The functionality of the app keeps improving, but the interface is so cluttered. It always has so many options visible that have nothing to do with the tool you are using, and those color palettes along the bottom are awful . It needs to hide about 60% of the visible functions in dialog boxes and menus where they belong.
ok but keep the UI components/controls placements like it is.... otherwise you gonna confuse people
they did the same with Gimp, I just never used modern versions...the best intentions can lead to a complete mess
It's good that the program itself is going to look better, but I think my main gripe about inkscape is the svg output. It's very redundant, bloated, and chaotic, it reminds me of how dreamweaver would messily cobble together html files. Whenever I use inkscape, I have to go into the file by hand and change many identical style tags to css classes, reorder, rename, regroup things, etc.. I can usually make the file ~⅔ smaller and _much_ easier to read, but it's very tedious 😢
