Dear Sir, Thank You! You bring so much joy to this old American senior, who has, since childhood, had a fascination with Great Britian, especially ENGLAND. I truly appreciate the effort, time, and extrodinary talent that you put into your craft. I deeply regret that I never treated myself to the blessings of travel, but I'm very thankful for blessings from you and others like you. You make this old world seem smaller, less distant, and so much more joyful. May you be greatly blessed with a long, healthy journey!
@bobbybigboyyes Never was a Grant fan and until now I didn't know his birth name. Maybe my mom was a Grant fan, I never asked her about my name. There were 9 of us, we were just happy when she called us by our own name, not a sibling's.
I think it's because most local people are so busy getting from A to B with eyes to the floor. We very rarely look up and miss so much. Different of course to tourist who have the luxury to able to amble along taking in the so many wonderful views.
Thank you SO much for these videos. You are no run-of-the-mill tour guide, no garden-variety film maker! No, not at all! You are a (very) tall and adorable purveyor of facts and knowledge! And cute as a rabbit. I love seeing you, I really do. I wish I was there. Alas! That shall not be. But I have you to show me. Pip Pip Cheerio!
I have been watching your videos everyday for the past week when I discovered them. I’m an Anglophile with a chronic illness and have been feeling poorly lately. Watching your videos has brought me so much happiness. I feel like I am walking around with you and seeing all the wonderful sights of London. Thank you for bringing me around your wonderful city! I love all your jokes and fascinating tidbits of information! And I love the way you dress. You are awesome! ❤️
Most people never notice what is in their own backyard. I was in Paris and I noticed a coat of arms on a building. A policeman was standing there and looking at me... So I told him what I was looking at. He said that all the years working there, he never noticed it.
jules, your video's are fantastic. you give me knowledge I never knew and don't need to know... but for some reason, it's really interesting knowing it.
Thank you so much for your fascinating videos. I've always loved London, but your delight in this city - especially all the small nooks and crannies and out-of-the-way places that make London so special - is infectious. I feel certain that I will return to London one day (after all, as Dr. Johnson wrote, "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life"), but until then, I will continue to enjoy your videos. Cheers from California!
Nobody would have ever thought about doing a research on the weather vanes of London. This makes Joolz Guides so special and apparently people have started to notice and recognize you on the streets. So hardwork is paying off, finally!!
Wonderful video! I love weathervanes and the history behind these is fabulous. Reminds me of one of my favorite Jethro Tull songs "Weathercock": "Good morning Weathercock: How did you fare last night? Did the cold wind bite you, Did you face up to the fright When the leaves spin from October And whip around your tail? Did you shake from the blast, Did you shiver through the gale?"
Everything now is plate glass and steel, with plastic cladding. Nothing of any character. Who was it said the architects did more damage to London, than the luftwaffe ?
Actually starting to get addicted to these videos, I have learned so much about London in the last week and all things that I have walked right past! Jools If you need a cameraman I hereby volunteer!
Apparently the weathervane at Aldgate Art Gallery was installed in 2007 and is by the Canadian artist Rodney Graham. it is called Allegory of Folly and, as you say, depicts Erasmus reading his master work, In Praise of Folly, while riding backwards on a horse. The figure is modelled on the artist, dressed in Renaissance style and clutching the Vancouver telephone directory, based on a previous wind vane of he made of himself riding a bicycle backwards!
Bloody Hell , every time i watch your vids about London ( i live in Italy) they get me so nostalgic!! I miss London so much and it's almost been a year now since i popped up for a visit. Thanks for your channel.. carry on 😁
Fabulous as always! Of course you love the St Olaf's & Santa Maria. You love anything about ships, sailing, the sea and exploration. This Pennsylvania girl loves any shout out to William Penn! Ttfn 💚
@@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 Oh wow! I don't know much about them. Are they considered a positive family? Or do they have their dark deeds like many wealthy people. W. Penn is generally seen as positive here as he founded PA on principles of peaceful co-existence.
Love these videos. I moved from London to Berlin three years ago and, I cant say I really miss it. However, watching your videos gives me a real sense of nostalgia and sadly, regret for not taking more time to delve into and appreciate the city's rich and intricate past. Thank you Joolz. Do keep them coming Ol'chap :)
Quite amazing, I've been to a lot of places in this video but I've never noticed all these weather vanes. Besides the mail boxes, I will also pay attention to weather vanes now when strolling around.
Hi Jules. I appreciated the video. They are always interesting and informative. By the way, I shocked a London cab driver in October when I mentioned "The Knowledge". He told me that I was the first American who ever knew about it, and he had been a cab driver for decades. : )
You've become quite the famous bloke! 👍You won't be able to go out in public anymore soon at this rate. Might have to pick you up a nice little Mini, and get out of London...take us a stroll down Hadrian's Wall and the likes..
Nice barque on that weathervane at Lloyds. Note the close-hauled mizzen is the only sail set. More effort from sails behind the keel's fore-and-aft center produces weather helm, the tendency to nose up into the wind. Just what you want from a weathervane.
Another lovely interesting film. That church of All Hallows by the Tower is so pretty. A pair of my ancestors got married there. He was William Henry Brand from the Shoreditch area and she was Louisa Groser and I know she was born and brought up on Tower Hill so I wonder if she played in the Tower of London grounds when she was a child.
Honestly Jules, you forgot When I grow rich said the bells of Shoreditch.... When will that be? Said the bells of Stepney, I do not know....said the great bell of Bow. Honestly! Apart from that, well done... I've never watched anything about weather vanes and it's been fascinating.
The shield used for Brunels' Thames Tunnel was rectangular. The arch near the portal of Rotherhithe Tunnel came from the shield for Rotherhithe itself.
I’m normally not at all interested in watching this type of video. But then one day about a month ago I received a pop up saying recommend video, and after viewing it, I have been going back and watching your older videos and ended up binge watching LOL. I guess that old saying is true never say never.
15:54 No no Joolz, that's part of the shield used to build Rotherhithe Tunnel opened in 1908. It's used as a "size guide" for vehicles entering the tunnel. It's nothing to do with Brunel's much earlier tunnel which was more low tech.
This has been one of your most interesting and informative videos. I am here to learn about London. ------ The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), chartered 2 May 1670, is the oldest incorporated joint-stock merchandising company in the English-speaking world. HBC was a fur trading business for most of its history, a past that is entwined with the colonization of British North America and the development of Canada.
So fascinating. I love weather vanes. We have a lot of them here in Bay City, Michigan on top of the very old houses down on Center Avenue. A lot of the houses were built by the lumber barons. Another thing that is prominent on the houses are the very beautiful stain glass windows. It would be really cool if you could do one about that i one of your videos. Well as always Joolz, I learn some more interesting facts. Thank you! Your friend, Steve Bonds from Bay City, Michigan
Thank you for the latest addition to your video collection. I will rely more on your videos than on my borrowed copy of Pepys' diaries when navigating your fair city. Cheers!
Haha, loved the Naked Gun reference. (Nice beaver. Thank you. I just had it stuffed!) Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas. But a Christmas tree in front of the Royal Exchange before Halloween...? Door knockers across London?
This is a fantastic video, packed with so many facts and so much information. It's sad that these weather vanes have such significance in our history, and obviously have to be maintained and looked after, but because of their positioning are missed and overlooked by the majority of people, hurrying around in their daily business. Whereas as no one can fail to see the modern skyscrapers, with no stories to tell.
What a good video, never thought about weathervanes. Now I know why there's a pub near Covent Garden called The Lamb and Flag. Haven't been down to London for a while but really fancy a long weekend now.
