What Happened To This BARNFIND Engine? - Renault R5 GTL Le Car

  • This Renault R5 drivetrain has NOT been turned over in the past 20 years and I'm glad it hasn't! Just by looking at the engine block, there was serious neglect around this engine by the previous owner. Not only was the cylinder head removed, but it looks like every seal and gasket was leaking.
    I wouldn't say that is very uncommon, but just the overall appearance shows that this engine had a hard life with just over 42'000km on the clock!
    Despite all of the bad, I have high hopes to rebuild this drivetrain and eventually the car, to where I can comfortably drive it down the road. It might not look like it'll be on the road any time soon, but I'll do my best to put a lot of time and effort into this Renault R5.

    This engine is indestructible. It’s a shame to let it deteriorate as shown in this picture. Great job in bringing it back to life. With regular maintenance and oil change, it will run for 200 kmiles, no sweat. Most important thing to watch is cooling, radiator tends to be undersized for hot climates.

      Hi there! thank you so much for your positive words! I will try my best to get this engine back up and running and then place it into the Renault R5. Hopefully that will be on the road sooner than later. I shouldn't have an issue with cooling in Canada...I will have make sure my coolant doesn't freeze in this country (haha). Regards Andreas

    An acetone and ATF mixture works quite nicely to free up seized parts.

    I just rebuilt this same model engine last year... pretty straight forward and Ebay and RockAuto have parts.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому

      That‘s awesome! Was it an 810 model engine and did you get your pistons from eBay? I saw that RockAuto has some gaskets, but they are out of stock. Since they are made by Ajusa, I might buy from them directly.
      Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Karl! Regards Andreas

    They sold millions of these in Europe . That same engine went into the tiniest Volvo too .
    Very smooth and quiet and frugal with fuel. Fun project
    Your videos and know how are great 👍

      You got that right, Tim! These engines were placed in many different types of vehicles and with very little changes to the engine block, Renault managed to produce many models with different HP ratings. I have only heard them run in Europe so far and have never seen one on American soil, so it will be interesting to see this car back on the road in the near future. I will share updates on this project once I find parts for this engine and I hope they are still available (fingers crossed). Thank you for your amazing comments, it's much appreciated! Regards Andreas

    Great job. Good thing these cars had a maintenance free timing chain. The engine must be removed to replace the chain or the tensioner.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  9 місяців тому

      That was probably more of a marketing pitch, than reality. The timing chain cover is on the far end, towards the firewall, which would be very hard or nearly impossible to change with the engine in the car. I will source as many new parts as I can to get this engine to factory specifications. After that it may last another 50 years or at least we can hope so! Regards Andreas

    well, I'm about to start a rebuild on a 1.4 engine, I'm sure i will encounter the same issues. This was helpful, thanks, I'm looking forward to the outcome of your project.

      Hi Luis, the engine in front of me is a 1.3L and yours is just a little bit bigger. I hope you will be able to find similarities between this engine and the one you're working. This will make your engine disassembly much easier! Once the parts are clean I can see what needs to be repaired or replaced. Updates will follow. Thanks for watching and enjoy your engine! Regards Andreas

    Thankyou very informative and good luck with it all. Im working on a C1J turbo block and is very similar in most aspects, will be cleaning parts for the next couple weeks, ordering gaskets etc new year ready for rebuild mission. Will need another video off you please when you get the time :)

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  6 місяців тому

      Thank you for your positive feedback, I really appreciate it! Yes you are correct, the newer C1J engine were similar in many ways, but they also had their differences. I have never rebuilt one myself, but I have worked on these smaller classic Renault engines before.
      At this current moment I am dedicating my time towards the completion of the BMW motorcycle restoration, but I will definitely finish the Renault R5.
      I cannot tell you exactly when the engine will be rebuilt, because I still have to go through all the parts once more to come to a solution on how it will be rebuilt...I might want to upgrade it a little bit while I'm at it.
      If you have any questions about your build, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or through my email. You can find both links in the video description.
      Regards Andreas

    Excellent video. I had this engine in the newer version of R5. Loved the car, can't forgive myself for selling it. I really can not understand how can someone leave the engine to deteriorate that much... Would be better if the engine was removed from the car or left in the car with the head and oil pan....but it is what it is

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for tuning in and leaving a comment! I totally understand your situation and hopefully you'll be able to find one in the near future. Maybe it'll need a little bit of work, because the R5's are almost 50 years old now. Who would have thought!
      Too bad the previous owner left these parts away, but that's just sometimes how things are. Now I'll try my best to repair it and improve the overall condition.
      Regards Andreas

      Yes, this is micromachine engine indeed HAHA! This must be the dirtiest engine I've ever had on my workbench and I cannot wait to make it shine again. I will remember to mention the mileage in upcoming videos to make the viewing experience easier. Thank you for the conversion!!

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому +1

      That is very possible and I wouldn't exclude this theory. There is hardy any visual wear on the crankshaft & camshaft, but a lot on the pistons...so there could have been foreign debris from either the intake or even down in the oil pan. This is a great comment! Cheers

      @@WorkshopRebuild The scaring on the Pistons is a key indicator. The cooling systems on those cars are known for getting air trapped if they were not bled correctly, leading to the overheating condition. Was probably then driven with a blown head gasket.

    Very good video as usual. Thank you for that! Will you get all the engine spare parts in north America or will you directly order them in France where this car was made?

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому +1

      Hi Guillaume, thank you very much for your comment! The cheapest would be to get them in Canada (if there are any), but I would source them from the stated and in worst case scenario they will have to be ordered from France.
      Even though Renault is French car manufacturer, they produced the R5 in Spain as well and they sold throughout all of Europe!
      I‘ll see what I can find and update you. Great question by the way. Regards Andreas

      @@WorkshopRebuild I'd say look at French sites. These cars were an era when a model was produced for years on end. Like the old French favourite the Citroen deckchair. Or 2 CV thingy as it was known.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому +1

      That's what I'm currently doing and I'm browsing Facebook pages and eBay, just so I don't miss out on anything. You got that right, they produced these in large number and there must be parts out there if not NOS parts. The 2CV was an amazing little car and it almost reminds me of a new model they introduced (Citroen Ami). Thanks for your help Simon. Cheers

    Such a small engine! What is the displacement and how many hp can it produce? BTW This video was very satisfying and I enjoyed every minute👍

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому

      It is a small, but efficient little engine(when running). The displacement is 1.3L and it should make just over 60hp...but that is a push😄 Thank you for your comment Matthew👍🏽

    piston 70 or 76?

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Рік тому +1

      Hi Billel, the bore is 73mm and stroke is 77mm. Since this is the 810 D7/25 engine it has a little bit more hp at roughly 6000rpm😁👍🏽
