Having an ice axe with an adze makes a huge difference to make the whole unless you have a shovel as avalanche gear

I am curious why / when you would use this? Once you rap down, then your skis are still at the top? Maybe to lower someone injured? Or maybe to allow one person to rap down, build another anchor and then they belay you as you climb down?

Yeah, to me it looks like something you would never get to use with a balanced crew unless somebody is injured

Crevasse rescue is the big one I would say. If you're concerned about avalanches at the entry of a colouir you can belay the first skier while he does ski cuts. Further down the snow if normally more wind protected. So its only the first couple of turns you have to worry most about. And even in a balanced group you quickly find yourself in a situation where someone gets a technical ascent or downclimb done while someone else needs a little bit of assurance. I have been in both places. But most of the time there are anchor options that are strong enough and way quicker to set up.
