Many years ago, before the big refurb of Kings Cross, platforms 9 to 11 were off in a little side section and weren't part of the big main hall at all. There was a little walk from the main hall to this side section and someone had put half a trolley through a wall that you walked past to get to platforms 9+, and a platform 9 3/⁴ sign. This was before the Harry Potter shop and all that gubbins, and it wasn't publicised particularly. I used that little side section on my commute and I always liked being in on this semi-secret.
Also that makes sense, as it being in a lesser visited section would explain why nobody noticed about a thousand children literally running through a wall throughout the course of the day. Of course, some people would still be in the area, but it'd be easier to run through it when nobody was around (or at least looking).

I don't think they plan to renumber the platforms. The cost to the signalling changes required is too prohibitive to change every reference to the platforms. It was much cheaper to add a platform reference then change them all. As the "new" platform is on the East side of the station, the only "logical" number they could use was 0.

At Central Railway Station, the largest station in Sydney, Australia, there are 3 sets of terminating rails in between platforms 9 and 10. ie One set of rails for platform 9, a set of rails in between with no adjacent platform, then the third set of rails for platform 10. A train would be able to drive in and 'park' on the middle set of rails, but to get off the train you'd need to climb down and walk across the other tracks, then climb up to platform 9 or 10. A train 'parked' on this middle set of rails would have to reverse out again to go anywhere, as all three rails end at Central. It's kind of weird, this extra set of rails doesn't seem to have a purpose .... unless there is some mysterious invisible platform in between.
I read somewhere that she was thinking of between platforms 4 and 5 - anyway, in one of the two stations, there are platforms with brick pillars / arches in between. It was those she was thinking of, but as she was in Edinburgh at the time on a very limited income, it was a bit difficult to justify taking a trip down to London to find out for sure!
Tom, something you might not know is that Network Rail had no intention of renumbering platform 0 to platform 1. It's not just a matter of changing the signs. All the complex signalling pathways, equipment, track circuits and control systems that lead up to KGX (as signallers know it as) would require incredibly invasive reconfiguration just to change the numbers. In short; it just isn't financially viable.
for years (till sometime after 1985)platforms 1 to 7 were under the eastern arch while platforms 8 to 10 were under the western arch and platforms 11,12 and 13 were in the suburban station.
On that note, In Gothenburg in Sweden, we actually have a house with a number of 17 1/2 in one street (Stora Nygatan). They built one house there in the 1850s, and when they built another house there a few years later, they discovered they had two lots, but only one number. So they named one 17 1/2, and that address is still somewhat valid today.
The sign and half trolley used to be outside, there were no queues or waiting or shop, it was just this odd thing in the street you could get a picture with.
I visited London in October 2019, and took a train from platform 10 at Kings Cross to (coincidentally) Potter's Bar. Platform 10 was still shared with 11, platform 8 with 9. I wonder if platform 0 was added as a station expansion (a new track built on the outboard side of track 1), or if they just renumbered the existing platforms so 9 & 10 would be separated & kids would stop running into walls.
IIRC the trolley was originally in a different location outside the station before all the works (perhaps before the Eurostar arrived from Waterloo?) maybe 8-10y ago?

They never changed the numbers. It's still platform 0.
This is the definition of a Tom Scott video
this remembers me that there is a so called platform 9¼ that a school installed just for fun.
just sit near it and you'll see/hear a lot of folks who run into it just for fun
6 years later still not changed...
love these videos man, keep em coming
..... things you never need to know would be a better name for this channel.
I think it'd be worth to check if it is actually at ¾ distance from platform 8 to 9
Something else you might not know: Euston station doesn't have a platform between tracks 9 and 10 either.
Turns out, the last 20 seconds are useless 6 years later its still platform 0
Fast forward to today, there are no plans to rename Platform 0.
Tom Scott and Harry Potter in one video. I can die in peace now.
I went 5 years after this was posted (April 2019) and the platforms had not been renumbered.
was there in 2019, the lines to THE GIFT SHOP were so long, not to mention to the cart
Well yeah, wizards need to get to school, they can't have a bunch of muggles crowding their path.
for years (till sometime after 1985)platforms 1 to 7 were under the eastern arch while platforms 8 to 10 were under the western arch and platforms 11,12 and 13 were in the suburban station.
That trolley used to be in another place, in a corridor between platforms 8 and 9 that barely anyone would pass by
On that note, In Gothenburg in Sweden, we actually have a house with a number of 17 1/2 in one street (Stora Nygatan). They built one house there in the 1850s, and when they built another house there a few years later, they discovered they had two lots, but only one number. So they named one 17 1/2, and that address is still somewhat valid today.
It will become the correct numbered platform? To quote Paul Daniels, "Now, that's magic!"
I'll be honest, that was indeed something I might not have known
That's why I couldn't find it when I was there :P
But Tom, if the platform was in the correct place, all of us Muggles would find it 😉
The trolly is also facing the wrong way
Hi 2022 here, still platform 0...
But why are you screaming, past-Tom? :D
One thing I noticed was that The movie looks like it was filmed at Paddington Station rather than King's Cross
I got a harry potter ad on this video
I think Google's been stepping up their advertising game lately, and its smart, cause now the ads seem to all be related to the video
Isn't there an urban legend that Boudica's buried under Platform 9 3/4?
I was there a couple of years back and knew for a fact that is not where is was filmed. I asked a railroad employee where it was actually filmed and led me through the gates to show me where is actually was (I can’t remember where it was). It was quite funny as it was actually really far away from the supposed platform 9 3/4 at the Harry Potter shop
