@@Vantage_pointsaccording to Dave Marsh’s “The Heart of Rock and Soul,” Michael McDonald wrote the lyrics on a NY-LA plane ride and was fussing with the melody when Loggins pulled up to his place for their first collaboration session. Loggins heard it, pulled his guitar out of the trunk and said “play that again because I think I have an idea.”
They worked on it that day, finished it over the phone.

What man hasn't been there...or even a woman for that matter,
"The song is about a man who is in love with a woman, but he's not sure if she feels the same way about him. The song explores the theme of unrequited love and the idea that sometimes we can fool ourselves into believing that someone feels the same way we do. In the end, the man realizes that he was a fool to believe that the woman loved him, but he's also hopeful that one day she'll return his love."

it is a rare thing sometimes for professional musicians to maintain their friendship after many years of gold and platinum success. the fact that these two guys Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald have remained the closest of friends after all these years is quite stunning! they have brought us some of the most wonderful times of music that we will ever know and I applaud these two musical ambassadors for just keeping it real after all this time!! Wat an example to the music industry and life in general!!!

According to the "Yacht Rock" mocumentary, Episode 1, it was record producer Koko Goldstein who got them hooked up after Michael McDonald was threatened by Doobie Brothers band mate, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter to write a hit single or be kicked out of the band. Their first collaboration, "What a Fool Believes," was based on McDonald's chastisement of Kenny Loggins for kicking former partner Jim Messina to the curb.
