      Vicki Robles I say go for It! Halloween is great because you can mix a bunch of colors and It just works.

    Best video demonstrating how to assemble the 6 pieces at the end so that the points match. And: pressing seams open! I was not sure about that. Thanks so much, just what I need to continue my current project!

      Glad it helped! Pressing seams can be a big controversy but sometimes it’s just necessary to get everything to work. Happy sewing!!

      @rsislandcrafts that's nice to get your reply straight away! I agree. When skipping pressing, e.g., with small projects, you usually see it later... so simple but important! Thanks so much for your helpful videos!

      Sometimes I’m on the ball 😉. As a new quilter I skipped many steps and then wondered why my project wasn’t nice looking or precise. Now I know it’s better to take the time for those little steps.

      That 60 degree stuff used to scare me but if I take it slow it's really not that difficult. I used to worry about what people said or thought but one of the benefits of getting older is that I don't always care anymore. ;)

    I like to sew 7 strips together, then I have the option to drop down a row to mix them up when I'm cutting. You do have to pick out the seams a bit but it works great if you want a more scrappy look

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  6 років тому

      I'm going to try quilt as you go sometime soon. I've done QAYG table runners and tote bags but not a block by block quilt. I've been researching different ways to put them together because I'm not a big fan of the style most people use where you add a sashing strip over the seam and hand stitch it down. For now I'm just letting it percolate in my brain and see what bubbles up.

      Beverley Simmons Since I’m just really getting into these videos I haven’t made a set schedule yet. I want to try making a variety of table runners or wall hangings but make them in a pattern that can be repeated to make a larger quilt.
      I love requests and will make a list of everyone’s requests and suggestions and do the best I can to work through that list.
      I was thinking this week of making some simple hand towels for the kitchen. With Christmas just around the corner it’s a good time to work on small quick projects for gifts or ourselves.

    I have searched the internet and you tube with no luck finding a round table topper for a 46 inch table. I believe your video shows it could work by adding more strips of fabric but then what degree would it need to be cut? I have tried figuring it out myself but I am 78 years old so it's been a long time since school math!!! Any help will be very appreciated, thank you. Geri

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  5 років тому

      Geri Jones I’m better at accounting math than angles and fractions. My two thoughts are first - have you looked for a round tree skirt in the size you need? Second - do you remember the trick of folding a piece of paper and using a pencil on a string to find the circle? That would give you the round circle you need but then It would only be one solid fabric and not like this table topper. Hmm. Let me take a look around a bit and see what I can find. I remember a blogger making something that might work. I believe they used one of those really long Dresden rulers.
      I wonder if you either had wider strips or more strips that It would make It the size you need. It still wouldn’t be round though.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  5 років тому

      Geri Jones I found this basic idea. Although you would have to add an appliqué circle to the center to cover the hole for the tree. www.advanced-embroidery-designs.com/projects/guide_tree_skirt.html

      A 30 degree ruler will mean you need more wedges for your circle. I haven’t made one that size but the process should be the same. I suggest using some scrap fabrics to test It out. See what measurements you might need.

    Robin what ami doing wrong when it won’t lay flat?

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  4 роки тому +2

      My guess would be either your pieces aren’t all cut the same or your seam allowance isn’t exact on all pieces. Unfortunately I think you will need to use your seam ripper. Then lay them in a pile and make sure they are all equal. When you made your original strip set did that lay flat with no wobbly seam lines?

      Beverley Simmons I love sewing by hand and how nice it looks but in reality that isn’t always possible. I’ve dabbled with machine sewn binding with mixed results. Maybe a placemat series would be a good idea. Here’s what I’ve figured out so far....with machine sewn binding you sew the binding to the back first. 1/4” is the common measurement but it’s really whatever works for you. A walking foot is helpful but not necessary. Then you iron the binding over to the front. Use some clover clips to keep the binding lined up past the stitch line from sewing on the binding. Stitch along the edge of the binding catching the front binding but not the back. That’s the hardest part for me so I found an easier way. When you sew the binding to the front use a decorative stitch. My favorite is a serpentine stitch so if you don’t always sew straight it won’t matter. You could use a buttonhole stitch too. Really any stitch you use will be fine as long as it holds the binding down.
      There is a binding foot that I’ve recently tried and it’s okay it just takes a bit of practice. You use bias tape (store bought or handmade) binding and sew the front and back on simultaneously.
      I like the speed and durability of sewn binding so I keep trying to perfect my technique. It’s hard if you don’t make several quilts a year.

    Hmm...just thinking...if I were to cut my own 2” strips, do you think I should cut them on the straight of grain or crosswise? Thanks.

      bonnie musselman I think if the design on the fabric allows It you should probably go straight of grain. I would be concerned about stretching the bias. Although if you use a ton of pins and go slow you should be fine either way. To be honest, I never pay attention to straight of grain. I work with so many scraps that I can’t always be picky.

      Beverley Simmons That’s a good idea. I don’t know anything about group chats though. I’ll have to see what’s available. It would be fun for some of us to chat, show what we’re working on, and ask questions.
