- The weather is glorious here in Central Portugal! Join me for a tour of the garden. See how my seedlings, plants and fruit trees are progressing on our little piece of paradise in a forest on a mountain in Central Portugal. We catch up with my husband Dave who is a builder involved in a whole house renovation. We see the progress he's made over the last month, including; plaster boarding, insulating, rendering, plumbing, installing a French drain, plumbing, cleaning and sealing an entire roof, custom made designed features and made to measure fire places and bathroom design features, painting and kitchen fitting... the list goes on! Dave has been very busy! Watch the video to see what he's been up to! I have been a little lazy this week mostly sunbathing and cooling down in the pool... sometimes you've just got to enjoy living in paradise and reflect on all the hard work you've done. We hope you enjoy this weeks episode. If you have any more gardening advice for me please comment below. If you'd like to ask Dave any questions about building please comment below. We also make regular updates and posts on our other social media platforms that are designed to help immigrants moving to Portugal, links below. Thanks for watching, until next week, Awen and Dave Xxx

Hello Awen, your plants are ready to go into the ground. Leaving plants in plastic pots and totally to the harsh sunlight will impede their growth. You may find with your warmer weather watering twice a day could be a good move. I think those cucumber are getting burnt by leaving them in the pots. Find some large pots or get Dave to make you a trough for your herbs. I think they do better is slight shade. Having said all that you are doing well with the garden, Try and keep the grass short, it helps to keeps bugs and allergies away. Dave, the house renovation is looking good. Till next time ..........
Thank you Elizabeth 🙏 All the seedlings are in the ground now 👍 I’m using shade netting on the lettuce and spinach and have moved the cucumbers to be by the artichokes. I have so much to learn but I am finding it easier every year as I get to know the garden, the climate and the different seeds. All the help and advice I’m getting on here is also invaluable 🙌 I really appreciate it 🙏🇵🇹❤️ Xxx
Hi 👋🏼 Glad you take the time out to savor the life you've built. Winters are long... it's time to take sun and rest between work projects. Garden and plantongs are looking really good. Orange segments in salads are yum. Your bouganvillia will sure to be bushy and full of flowers this summer. I think those butternut squashes are ready to go in the ground. Yellowing of leaves with most plants seems from over watering. I think all your plants seem ready for planting. Yes, definitely a gate to keep the puppers from trampling the garden. 😊
Hi! I’ve planted all the seeds now 👍 I think I will have to redo the cucumbers but there were enough courgettes to plant 🙏👍🇵🇹❤️ Xxx
Hi, courgettes need quite a lot of spacing because they get huge so I’d plant your best ones and see how they do but hold on to your others as back up.Yes get your onions, spinach and definitely your beetroot in.Cucumbers hate direct heat and sun so if you can shade I would.Tomatoes plant and get your stakes and climbing trellis in at same time for them to grow up but pinch out side shoots as they appear. The more you do it you will learn what works were etc. It’s all fun and a learning curve.Definitely water morning and evening as it heats up.Good luck xx
Thanks soo much Wendy 🙏 All the seedlings are in now 👍 I’ve spaced the root veg like you said and am redoing the cucumber. I think they got frazzled by the sun! It’s very hot here for May Xx
Already, Dave's reno is unrecognizable from the house and grounds as they were. It's going so amazing when it's done.
Hi Ruth 👋! He’s just finished tiling the fire surround in the living room. It was really difficult as it was curved and all the terracotta tiles were slightly different in size 😅! But it looks amazing 👏👏👏 I’ll try and film more of it for next week. This reno is coming to an end this month and he’ll be starting a new one soon, again, a whole house renovation. Should make for good informative viewing 👍🇵🇹❤️ Xxx
You did so well with the garden, it's always good to have to much, just incase you loose a few to bugs or the weather.
The cottage looks so different, i bet it's even better still by now. Brilliant updates from you both. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Owen 🙏🏼 Josh (Dave's son) is here now and we're busy showing him around. Hope you've had a good week and enjoy the weekend Xxx
@@portugalmuse8430 ahh that's lovely having family to visit. I'm visiting mine this weekend up in Llanbabo. 😉 Hope you guys have a fantastic weekend as well. 👍🏼
Maybe consider planting your cucumber and salad in the part of the garden that is shaded most of the day. I think you planned to have pumpnings there
Hi Tina 👋! I’ve covered the spinach and lettuce with shade netting and the cucumbers I’ve moved to be in the shade. I hadn’t expected the sun to be this fierce this time of year but the climate keeps changing 👍
welldone
Thanks 🙏
👏
🙌
Great gardening video, I always plant marigolds with tomatoes they call it companion planting and it works well, hydrangeas like semi shade and damp so lots of water and feeding till established, plant flowers in with your veg looks good and attracts pollinators, you’ve got off to a great start
Thank you Patricia 🙏 I’ve planted all the seedlings now. It was hard work 😅! Still a lot to learn, maybe next year I will try the ‘no dig’ approach I keep seeing on UA-cam. My knees are killing me 😊 Xxx
Great vid!👍👍
Garden tip: To strengthen tomato, eggplant, and cucumbers, add a 325 mg. uncoated Aspirin tablet to 1gallon of water and spray in the early morning. The Salicylic acid will protect them against mildew, etc.
Great tip!!
Fantastic 🙏 Thank you 👍
The majority of the plants are more than ready to plant out, most things do better in the ground in any case. You'll have an interesting time because of the intense heat but you'll learn from experience what works or not.
None of us get it right first time, I well remember sowing an entire packet of purple sprouting broccoli my Mum had on the front of her gardening magazine. We ate it as fast as we could from our broccoli forest but the enormous excess we gave the farm animals in the field behind the house!
Dave you're doing a great job of the renovation .
❤🏴
Thank you Annie 🙏 All the seedlings are in the ground. I did a little short video of them. The cucumber didn’t survive the heat so I’ve planted some more seeds and will keep them in the shade 🥒👍 Dave is working so hard and the property he’s renovating is almost finished. I’m going to try and get over there this week to do some more filming. I’m tackling the balcony rendering and it’s a horrible job 🤣😅👷♀️💪!!! Really regretting starting it now as it’s ‘upside down’ rendering and I’ve got to make it stick… it’s not easy… but I’m going to keep going with it🤞Xxx
@@portugalmuse8430 Well done getting the seedlings in, fingers crossed now.
Don't envy you upside-down rendering, your neck will hate you for it.
Dave's an absolute star, look forward to seeing his progress.
Xx 🏴
There's progress everywhere you look. The garden and the house are looking great. All of your hard work is paying off. I'll bet Dave LOVES coming home to that pool after a long hot day. Do the dogs ever get in the water?
Hi Joan 👋! Thanks for being so nice 🙏 it’s great to get this encouragement on here 🙌 Xxx
The dogs don’t get in the pool but we do take them swimming to the river beaches. Gruff is a fantastic swimmer, Brân’s not so keen 👍
Hello Awen and Dave garden looks lovely Dave is doing a cracking job on Bungalow restoration all the best
Hi Stephen 👋! How’s it going? Thanks for watching 🙏 Xxx
@@portugalmuse8430 Hello Awen i am restoring my ferguson tvo tractor ted 20 its had a engine rebuild i am now painting the tractor ferguson stone grey with a brush good job
Great progress on the house Dave, inside and out. It was the right thing to do to incorporate drainage into the project right from the get go. Looking good!
Thanks Bryan 👍 This project is almost finished now. Starting another whole house renovation next month 🙌🇵🇹
Most impressed with what you've done so far! Well done!
Thanks for your support 🙏 Xxx
Wish I was there, lucky you
We are really lucky 🇵🇹❤️
Look at spacing for butternut squash, they grow big and need room, yours look a little close to each other. Same with caugettes, it won’t matter if some die because you get many from one plant, you’ll have to give away to neighbours and friends 😊
Thanks Katherine 👋 I’ve done what you said and left 1m between them 👍 All the seedlings have been planted now 🙌 It was hard work 😅 my knees are killing me! But it will be worth it ❤️🇵🇹🙌 Xxx
@@portugalmuse8430 nothing better than eating food you’ve grown yourself, it’s hard work but pays off eventually, also look at the amount of water each plant, they’ll differ to the amount, you can also self pollinate with a small paint brush. X
Hello 👋🏾 💕Awen, don’t blame you relaxing & taking advantage of your awesome weather. Your homestead is looking really nice. Today, the U.K. weather has been extremely hot - blue skies and no rain 🙌🏾🥳 Would shade netting help the plants from the harsh sun? I’d water them twice daily if they’re dry. Wow Dave has done an awful lot to the house. It’s incredible . Thanks for sharing 🤗🥰
Thanks for watching Jeannie 🙏 Glad you’ve got nice weather 😎🌞I’ve planted all the seeds now. Going to sort out some sort of shade netting structure today 👌👍👍👍 Xxx
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, I think you need to put shade cloth over the vegetables garden for the summer or they are all going to burn. It's so beautiful with you guys 👍.
Thanks Arjan 🙏 I’m going to cover the lettuce and spinach and keep an eye on the rest. All the seedlings are in the ground now 😀 It was hard work 😅 especially the onions! Happy most of the work is done now 🙌🙌🙌 Xxx
The garden looks great! You've done good! I think everything is ready to go in the ground. It good to put the plants outside before you plant like you did. It is called "hardening them off". I usually put mine in a mixture of shade and sun at first to help them adjust. A breeze is what helps them "harden off". Its hard to tell if the brown and yellow leaves is too much water or too much sun. I would start by putting them in the shade. For the lettuce you need sun shade like what you used on the pile of stuff by your car. That is a good price at Little. Shade cloth is rated like 50% sun block. I keep shade cloth on my lettuce pretty much all spring and summer. Otherwise they will bolt. Which means they will flower and then the leaves are bitter to eat. I have these hoops (they come in different sizers) that I put over a row and then I put the shade cloth over it. Clothespins work to clip to the hoop. I also use wire loops as a stake to hook to ground. I am sure you will see this in a you tube video! ha! What would we do without youtube videos! Sorry this is so long winded. I hope it is helpful! Take care, see you next time.
Thank you Jan 🙏 I’ve planted all the seedlings now. It was hard work and my knees are killing me 😅 I think I will have to do raised beds next year and try the ‘no dog’ approach I keep seeing on UA-cam. I’m going to sort the shade netting today 👍
Hi, the vegetables are ready, I think they will start growing as soon as you plant them. I don’t think the cucumber will come back but you can try. Maybe you should start a compost pile to give extra nutrients to the soil. You are doing great, don’t put the mint on the grow… it’s spread like crazy, it better contained. Good luck.
Thank you 🙏 All super helpful advice 🙌 I’ve planted all the seedlings now 👍🤞🤞🤞 Xxx
Beautiful green and lush all around you❤The butternut squash, tomatoes and courgettes can go out now. The lettuce do not like too much sun so best to find a shady spot. You may be overwatering, especially the courgettes and herbs. All herbs should be fine outside now, and will also do well in a shady spot. I am just outside of London and have already planted out tomatoes, all herbs. Your aubergine need to be in individual pots, which is probably why they are not thriving. I live just outside of London, so in much cooler temperatures than yours and I have planted out tomatoes, aubergine, all herbs, chard and beans Still too cool for my cucumbers.
Thank you Christine 🥰❤️🫶 I’ve done a little ‘short’ video of all the veg planted. They are much happier now they are in the ground. The cucumbers didn’t survive so I’ve planted some new seeds. I’ve still got 4 courgettes and they are doing great now they are in the ground 🙌👍🌱 Thank you soo much for all your advice 🙏 I really appreciate it Xxx
Give the seed a go from the Sage plant - nothing ventured, nothing gained. I dont know what gardening vlogs you are watching, but I would stick to Portuguese ones.... TheScotters, TheNewbys, Make Do Grow and Living in the Algarve Portugal. They are all growing and restoring. Be great if you met up with them too (Will help with subscribers too). Dave is doing a top job at the renovation. If he is looking for another job, Real Algarve Living need a decent builder, they keep getting cowboys and have become disheartened. He might want to touch base with them too (his brother who is also doing the reno has a channel The Quinta. You could help them and they could introduce your channel on theirs.
Thank you Tracy 👍 In honesty… I’m a bit shy ☺️!!! I’ve become a bit of a hermit since our cafe business closed last year 😅 I’m very happy just keeping myself to myself working in the garden with the dogs for company. I know other channels meet up with other channels to try and grow their subscribers but it’s not really what we’re about. Dave is pretty much booked up now for over a year and is really reluctant to encourage more work coming his way… he’s really tired and overworked!!! But thank you for thinking of us and wanting us to succeed here, I really appreciate it Xxx
