Agreed. The R8 has been great so far. I upgraded form the R7 and think the new features are worth it especially GATSO detection. I also really like the how the mute/dim button is up front now, much easier to access the way I have it mounted.
Hey, saw ur post on the G37 Sub, awesome video and It helped me install my own hardwire kit. I had one sitting at home for around 2 months and i finally decided to stop being lazy and hardwire it lol. Anyways, my question is, should the radar detector stay on even when the car is off? I turned the car off but for some reason the detector was still lit up. I have a g37 coupe and followed the same holes you put the pins in. Once again thanks for the video!
Hey glad it was helpful and it motivated you to install it. My radar detector turns off when the car is off. Since you’re a is a different model and year, I think you need to test other cables in the connector, you might be hooked up to the garage door opener which probably stays on after shut off. Try to insert the pin into another cable.
These detectors are not your father's detectors. They are much more complex and take time to learn the hundreds of settings. Yes, you can just leave the default settings, but depending on where you live and how you drive, the detector may drive you nuts. I have an R7 mounted next to the rear view, but wired it to the mini fuse box under the dash. I just followed the A pillar and weather stripping all the way down, so the cord it completely out of sight. That's another way you can wire it up. Also, the video says big differences between the 7 and 8, but does not sight those differences.
You're absolutely right that radar detectors have become incredibly sophisticated. Fine-tuning settings based on local conditions is important. The A-pillar wiring route is a good idea. However, if your vehicle has side curtain airbags, it's important to avoid running the cables over the airbag deployment path. I ran my dashcam power cable like this: from the mirror, under the headliner, down the A-pillar, and THEN across the dash at the base of the A-pillar trim. Crossing the cables over the top section of the A-pillar could interfere with airbag deployment. (The dashcam install video is on my channel where I show how I ran cables using this route) Regarding the R7 vs. R8 comparison, the 3 points I made at the beginning of the video are what I meant. The GATSO detection is the biggest difference. Besides that, R8 has a bit better range and the Auto-highway/city mode convenience. I'll likely edit the title to "key" differences since that's probably more accurate. Thanks for your feedback! It's helpful.
Another solid video, sir. Just straight to the point with everything! We specifically produce LEDs for auto. Can we invite you as a collaborator to do a review? We've emailed for an inquiry

The Uniden R8 is what I have also I love it, I sold my Escort Redline 360C to get it.

I went with the R8 too. I really wanted the Redline 360 but changed my mind since Escort can't seem to get their act together.
@4x4gear33 And you are so right with that, Escorts seem to have theirs head in the sand.

But it fails
What do you mean fails?
@DIYGarageNation it doesn't work like my redline or valentine v1 gen2 for KA at a longer range
@ that’s weird did you ever own the R8? R8 has longer detection range including the KA band.
@DIYGarageNation yup but not pop radar for pop ka
