Evolution and Future of XR Technologies and Applications

In recent years, we have observed a rapid development in extended reality (XR) technology, encompassing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). It is thrilling to see XR technology has found a lot of applications in different domains, e.g., gaming, entertainment, training, manufacturing, education, medical, etc. In view of its immense power and potential, XR technology, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI), is increasingly hailed as the cornerstone of the next-generation computing platform. In this talk, I will share my experience and perspective on the past, present and future of XR technology and its applications. Specifically, I will first introduce the development journey of XR technology from its very beginning and the fundamental techniques essential to XR. Then I will highlight a few works done by my team and my collaborators in the past few years, including cutting-edge developments in XR technology and representative applications of XR in different sectors. Lastly, I will share my views towards the next development of XR technology and its applications, culminating in an exploration of future prospects, particularly concerning its integration with AI.
