- In September, a fire tore through the Derrick Street homeless encampment, aka The Slab, in Huntsville, Alabama. The city closed the camp and moved 75 to 100 people about 100 yards down the road, where a hastily constructed chain-link fence and three city trash cans were the only infrastructure. Here a representative from Love Huntsville talks about the city’s response in the immediate aftermath and the importance of community resources for people experiencing homelessness.
