    I got picked as part of our negotiation committee recently and was looking for tips on how to handle being at the table when i found this. Good content, everything else on here is from the employers perspective

    Great video. It was an excellent starting point toward my education as a possible negotiating team member this year. Your video has clearly shown me that our union hasn't done things by the book regarding contract negotiation times since before I started working there 9 years ago. I am hoping to bring a change to the table this year, and show my union how different things can be when the committee understands all the rules..as well as plays by them. Throughout the past, our committees have been unprepared, and have simply handed over many of our leverage points....including the right to strike!!!! This leads me to my question. "Without the ability to strike, what kind of action could a union take if they found themselves at an impasse with the company like the one you discussed in this video?"

    Is there any chance that you could share the survey that you made? I was asked to be apart of the negotiating committee for my union.

    I would love to speak to this gentleman one on one. I’m in a ems union here in NJ and we can’t seem to get anything together. No steward, our president is effectively working against us. I need all the help I can get

    Great content! I’m so glad I found you guys! I recently got involved in my local and I can use all the research I could find. Our contract has been expired for two years, our local says the company won’t come to the table until they finish negotiating with a different department. Is this normal ?

      Glad you found us too! Unions can continue to work under expired contracts, but if the contract is expired then either side can unilaterally demand negotiations open up, I believe. Maybe the union feels like the contract is good, so there's no rush, or maybe they feel like they don't have enough leverage to secure a good contract if negotiations open back up. I'd look over the contract, see what you think of it, and maybe ask around, figure out why they aren't pushing the employer to come to the table.
      For example, in my own union, I am also working under an expired contract. As a federal employee, we wanted to at least wait until Trump was out of office to begin negotiations if we could help it. Additionally, the contract is pretty good, so there's not a lot of heat from membership to renegotiate. And thirdly, we're an amalgated local with 29 different agencies and 29 different contracts, with some agencies more friendly than others. I happen to work in a pretty friendly agency, so we're not really at the front of the line as far as concerns go.
      I'd also look into LaborNotes, they have a good section called Steward's Corner, and you may even be able to ask them questions.
      Brandon Magner is a guest we've had on the show and a labor lawyer, he may be able to give more certainty on whether or not you can unilaterally demand negotiations open up.

    Hello I have a question about unions in Colorado. When CBA expires does the company have to offer another contract at negations? Say the contract expires June 1,2023 can they say we don’t want to offer any contract? Thanks in advance.

      I’m not too educated on this but I believe if you have a union you should start negotiations before your current contract expires and if it goes past the expiration of the current contract and you reach a deal then you will get back pay for the days after your contract expired.

      If you want to survey your membership for a contract you there are a lot of free services you can use - survey monkey and google forms are good resources. One on one conversations are good and important as well.

    Can unions force employees to go to arbitration with all issues, even if the union will not represent the employee? Can union and employer change arbitration clause at arbitration to benefit the employer and remove the time limit for arbitrators to rule and give the arbitrator infinite time to rule?

    • @mustbtrouble
      @mustbtrouble Рік тому

      I don't think they can change the arbitration cause in the arbitration to benefit either party it's already outlined in the contract how disputes will be settled and that will persist for the length of contract. Arbitration will almost always favor the employer
