  • Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers being interviewed by Ian "Molly" Meldrum back in 1980, probably the first time Australians ever saw or heard of The HeartBreakers or Tom Petty.
Tom Petty does most of the explaining on how, when & why The HeartBreakers started so I'll leave it there so you can see for yourself this very rare interview.

The interview was done before 1980, but was shown on Countdown in 1980 when TPHB broke through commercially in Australia. Recently, there has been a lot of unseen and unearthed interviews Ian ''Molly'' Meldrum did that was never shown on CD. This interview could have ended up buried in the vault as not worthy of broadcasting if Tom Petty didn't become commercially big in 1980. The Countdown viewers wouldn't have cared at the time.

It's around 1978. The show's producers must have decided to ''dust off'' an older interview seeing as 1980 was the year Tom broke commercially in Australia. Ian ''Molly'' Meldrum interviewed almost everybody at that time, but not every interview was played on the show.

    This isn't 1980. It's earlier. Probably 77 or 78.

I think it's late '79 after Damn The Torpedoes was released...

TPHB first toured Australia in 1980, so the date makes sense.

The interview would have been done in 1977/78 but actually shown on Countdown in 1980 (the time when the group broke commercially in Australia). The show's producers must have decided to dust off an older interview seeing as they may not have been able to get Tom Petty at the time. Ian Molly Meldrum interviewed almost everybody at this time (except The Cars), but not every interview was shown on Countdown...
