      (any brand, any model)
      Thank you for your help!
      (PS. Nowadays I am thinking of Roland FP-10 and StudioLogic SL88 Studio,
      because I've heard and read really good things about their action,

      Thanks! I was thinking about the Casio CDP-S350 or 360,
      because it seems one of the best bang for the buck Casio,
      but then I found the Casio PX-S1100. The PX-s3100 is too expensove for me, and I think I wouldn't use the majority pf its sounds and I don't need arranger function,
      so I thought maybe the PX-S1100 would be a better choice (for me at leqst),
      because all I really want is a nice fully weighted action with a nice piano sound.
      I think tje CDP piano sound is pretty nice too especially for its price, but I like the sound of the PX-s1100 waaay better.
      I really like somewhat darker piano sounds (I mean for example Yamaha or Roland sounds tend to be a little too bright to my taste, and I think the Caaio PX-S1100 has a nice darker (and more realistic) sound IMHO, which I really like. I guess I better just save up for the PX-S1100.
      (PS. Sorry, I just noticed this when I finished typing. This comment got a little longer then it should/could've been :))

    I did a blind listen and took some quick notes. There was a noticeable volume difference on the Nord (seemed quieter), and the Roland had a strange panning issue... seemed off to the R channel more than it should have been? Anyone else notice this, or is it just me?
    I don't have the best ears, just wanted to share.
    From my blind listen, I liked Keyscape the most, and Nord was close second but the quietness was hard for me to look past for some reason. Unfair, but I guess that's how the loudness war started, eh? haha

    Interesting comparison. I agree with the conclusion. Montage and Fantom are Workstations, they can't fight with the enormous Keyscape Piano sound bank ( 200Gb I think). And Nord sound is also more natural. By the way, I love the pieces and the pianist. What is his name ? Dan Who ? What are the pieces from ? Especially the first one (played on the Roland and the Casio) , with Bb - Bb/D - Fsus/C - Eb/G ... So nice. At 9:35 I think I recognize Nimrod by Edward Elgar. Again who is the player and were can I ear more of him ? Sorry Jack, I like You too of course

Learn how to adjust the driver buffers down to failure, then raise them up just enough to stop the glitches. I have 10ms latency.

    I think Jack tried to mention subtlety, but the Montage and Roland are different beasts from the Nord Grand. They both have piano centric models for comparable prices with action designed to feel like a grand piano. I mean I'm not faulting the comparison becuase now piano centric players will look at maybe a CP over a montage. More rounded players might prefer the compromise action of the Montage though

I am extremely picky and there is still a long way to go before a digital piano reach the moon in order to sound acoustic, but the nord has a great sound and fits my workflow even though i have to tweak it at times. Their grand samples are still lacking, but their Upright samples really has something real in them.

      Many of Nord's pianos are licensed from Pianotekk, so they're basically cut down Kontakt libraries. My gripe is that they have too much ambiance & mid frequency. I've found a bit of a work around for most of the pianos. if you're interested, I'll share.

    Not sure it's reasonable to gauge the action of the Montage when it's visibly bouncing around on the top tier of a stand - the best key bed in the world is going to feel bad when it's supported so unstably.

    I remember back when I was an electronics technician and then an engineer that regular folks assumed I could tell them the best "Hi Fi" and then "Stereo" equipment to get. Especially speakers. People would listen to speakers in the listening room of one store. And then drive across town and listen to some in another store. It is VERY hard to compare unless they are side by side, such as these pianos. That also suggests that if the piano test had them located in different places with drive time to get there, it might be harder to judge. The other thing I suggested was they buy the cheapest speakers they liked the sound of. Some people like big boomy bass lousy frequency response speakers. Tastes vary with pianos, too. Of course, a professional pianist (and my mother was a professional concert pianist) is going to have a better ear for such things. She didn't live long enoughto see the state of the art that exists today, but was adamant they "would never equal a real piano". Of course, you should never say never, or always. And here we sit with most of us with crummy little speakers that came with out Dell setup or whatever which probably doesn't translate the real sound all that well.

    • @derbar7051
      @derbar7051 7 місяців тому

      I can attest to your mother that a real accoustic will never be beaten against electronic keyboard. Some elements of music will never fade despite the test of time -- I'm a professional pianist.

    • @trainliker100
      @trainliker100 7 місяців тому

      @@derbar7051 Maybe. But I've been involved in "high tech" for years and one thing I have always avoided saying is "never." We might not only get to the point where in a "blind taste test" so to speak, even experts might not be able to tell the difference. If I create a waveform identical to that of a certain piano and have a sophisticated enough speaker system to "handle DC to Daylight", I suspect it is only a matter of time. And there can also be choices to select piano brands, model, period of manufacturer. voicing desired, and so forth. I know that two consecutive pianos off the line won't even sound exactly the same, but whatever the variables are, they can probably be identified and simulated.

    • @derbar7051
      @derbar7051 7 місяців тому

      @@trainliker100 I don't disagree with you based on the science behind your logic but I do think that science cannot replicate human nature. The sense of touch and the sound world that a electric keyboard pales in comparison compared to accoustic (good that is) pianos. It doesn't help that I have perfect pitch and a true love for the art form so I am biased. Maybe I am wrong and that you're right in that there will be no distinction between both mediums, but I am sceptical.

    Hey guys I love your vids, and the playing of the both of yus. I'd only mention that these machines have different purposes, Fantom's a workstation, Montage is a Synth beast, the Nord Stage is the ultimate nord stage piano, and the casio is not even a controller-only. Would make more sense to put the best controller for piano action with the Keyscape, the Yamaha CP88, and the best Roland stage piano. (Sorry Korg has no place here lol)

    The Nord sounds nice but it sounds more like an EP to my ears, not a bright concert grand. I like this format of comparison. Please consider doing another one of these blind tests and include the Kurzweil K2700 against other similarly priced models ($3k) from Yamaha, Nord, Roland.

    Maybe do a shootout between stage pianos like the Yamaha CP88, Korg SV2, Nord Piano 4, etc. Also, the Roland Fantom 8 can get much better piano sounds if you mess around with it a bit. I'm not sure if you had the Super Natural piano tones downloaded on there or not, but they are much better than what the Fantom 8 comes with out of the box.

    Brilliant piece of work. Each still some way off from a real acoustic piano, I think! Might be handy to include one sometime, so we could 'calibrate' our expectations. Trying to find words for what I hear: these keyboards sound like an over-compressed FM radio broadcast of an acoustic, though some of that might be down to UA-cam.
    Maybe also try a classical riff? Chopin, Mozart? Such a different texture from jazz.

Blind A/B tests with loudness being normalized (you may use EBU-R128 lvele meters for equalizing the perceived loudness, there are free plugins out there) are the only serious tests in my opinion. Please keep us both entertained and informed with more videos :-) // That being said, I am not even a pianist or keyboard player :-D Still love your videos a lot.

    For pianos alone, I think that was spot on really. I do personally like the roland V-Pianos sounds ... but once tuned to the individual players touch (the stock patches arnt great). not really sure why you chose the Fantom though - as the RD2000 has the same keybed and same sound engine, and is more a pure piano (OK it has lots of other stuff too - BUT its not a VA synth, sequencer etc that the Fantom is). While the outcome would be the same - the price difference between the Fantom and RD DOES make a difference - as does the price of the Nord V the RD (quite a bit) - and indeed the soundscape version. Have to say the Grand stage is the only Nord piano Id play - its the only one with a decent keybed, and it misses out on a lot other stage pianos can do (the RD as mentioned, Yamahas dedicated pianos etc) - but as JUST a piano - its probably the top choice right now (bar POSSIBLY a Kawai MP7/11)

      As they are in a parallel not competing universe, I feel I can point here to the YT channel of Merriam Music where pianist Stu Harrison reviews pianos. I'd say more as a musician than as a salesman. He did in-depth reviews of virtual instruments about half a year ago, comparing Keyscape to others. I think that the Kawai MP11SE now has the best action of the 88-key boards that look like a stage piano (but may be too heavy). Maybe Kawai should update their VPC-1 with these same keys and it facilitating the MP11SE's 3-pedal unit (with optical innards, instead of common potentiometers). I feel, though, they should also do a version of the VPC-1 with a real real grand piano action in it, like they put into one of their Novus machines. No, that will not become light enough for a single person transport to gigs either.

    this is so interesting. so, i own that cheaper casio. it was the first one i bought. then i bought some others that cost a lot more. i also have an actual piano i was given. for me, i use a daw, studio one 5 pro, and i have tons of vst's. for me i shoot for the physical feel since most the time they are going to sound the same as i use sounds outside the device itself mostly. the irony of watching this and videos of shootouts between keyboards is how some people say they love the feel of one, and dont care for another, and then ill run across someone else who loves the other and dislikes the other. i use to think only guitarists ran into that issue where some swear by a strat while others cant stand them. for myself i HATE the casios feel lmao. yet he thought it was great. after all my research ive found its better just to go play on one yourself before buying it, and never listen to anyone else. it goes far deeper into personal opinion that i realized it would when it comes to piano, especially digital. edited for typos. =)
