It's a early 20th century Greek dish, there was another dish also called Pastitsio in Greece but was a more of a filo wrap with a pasta filling. The Greek chef that invent it made it as homage to Italian, French and Greek cuisine. He named it Pastitsio after the Italian word (pasticcio) meaning layered dish.
