Caught on camera and still pleads "not guilty". Lying should be another charge.
It is actually. That's called Perjury. If you lie to Law Enforcement, you go to jail for that too.
Gas stations should make checking the credit card machines once or twice daily an employee task.
absolutely...and when a pump is opened it alerts staff inside...good point
Gas station clerks already do this or at least have been advised too for like the past year or two
Some not all stores are somtimes in on it!
it is. but I guarantee they skip doing it
The gas station attendants are lazy af.
My heart trully hurts for the senior folks who barely get by and simply not aware of these thefts.
Aww❤
If you don't have any money using a credit card is just stupid. It's other people's money you will pay. I go in to the bank for cash and pay cash at the store. No big deal. Some stores give a cash discount but you have to ask.
They barely get any jail time you can steal millions from banks and only get 7 years and people get killed for less, for stealing a big screen TV
Seniors should be banned from owning credit cards for their own good! Also be banned from walking on streets
Hahaha
I work at a credit card call center and seriously the rise in fraud is unprecedented. It's the majority of my day helping account holders deal with fraudulent transactions.. scary
Hopefully, you're educating these callers to only use the chip when making purchases and not to swipe or tap. Those two methods can be captured.
It’s a big pyramid scheme.
Do them a favor and tell them to use cash.
Can’t be tracked or hacked.
Safest method of payment there is.

For people is more of a risk. Every time your info and social sec# get put into some companies “system”, who knows who gets to it some day.
Signing up for an app and all this other horse shit is a super high risk.

It's inflation plus a declining economy
Caught red handed but “….pleaded not guilty” 😂😂😂
My thoughts exactly 🤦♀️😒🙄
It could have been someone else, let's not jump to conclusions 😂 ... No, seriously. I was watching an episode of the first 48 and they were interrogating a guy who shot a woman. They were watching footage caught CCTV and they were like soooooo... This isn't you? And he kept denying it. Even though he was wearing the same t-shirt and jacket, I mean it was amazing..
Our country and society has lost it’s mind! This is why we need to bring back Capital punishment into the government!
He’s Delusional!
Right 😂😭😂
So it cost consumers $1 billion dollars annually, and yet when these scammers are caught they get a slap on the wrist. Why should they stop?
sir it says it costs financial instutions AND consumers means most of these charges were rectified. the damage i guess is in your credit scores if it was a credit card. But theft is theft, I'd rather someone steal from me like this than confront me with a gun and possibly killing me.

@yumyummarbles Guess what the financial institutions don't pay the lost funds you do in the form of fees that will continue to increase if theft rises.
“Just move on to the next terminal“ how about notifying a employee and have them take a look so the next person who uses it won’t be the next victim
A lot of the times the employee is in on it smh
@@Malepical if they’re on it, why is it not removed…smh
@@lemontea128 can't tell you.. I've seen videos where someone discovers it and the employee tries to get them out the store or stop recording.. usually gas stations or convenience stores
the reporter makes it seem its all over the skimming and to check the machine its not dosent hurt to check
This happened to me at an AutoZone in my area. I think an actual employee placed the reader. I reported it to the management but they did nothing. Next time, I'd report to the FBI.
Nah just take it and destroy it, calling the cops gonna be a waste of time, see what that dude plea? When he was caught right handed
True
FBI won't do anything... they would rather watch Epstein videos
There is no financial incentive for most businesses to deal with this issue.
Just take anything you want in the store. The law doesnt punish criminals.
His suggestions of "feel the skimmer, if it doesn't feel right, don't use it." How about reporting it instead of letting another person fall victim to it....Duh!
I'm sure the vendor would stop using them once they find out there's a skimming device. You can't catch them all before someone falls victim. That's what the tips are for.
We’ll considering the skimmer would be over the credit card slot on that pump and not the keypad feeling the numbers would be zero help.
I frequently look at the machines before I scan my card. I’d suggest you do the same thing while you wait for every criminal to get arrested.
Use apple pay or samsung pay, its more secure
I saw the security tape at the gas pump torn one day, moved to a different pump and also went inside to report it. Not sure if they took it too seriously, but I can hope.
That’s why I yank on all credit card terminals 😂
😂😂 I don’t trust any of them! 🤨
lmao great minds think a like
Exactly even in the banks!!
Lol, same
I said that’s exactly what I’m going to start doing.
My credit card information was stolen and the police said most likely from a skimmer. I was notified by my credit card company when my card info was used in New York the same day I purchased a pizza in another state. What’s sad is anytime you hand over a credit card or give the information, your at risk. My husband’s grandmother’s credit card information was stolen by an employee with a satellite company for tv service. Crazy world we live in.
Yeah, this really bothers me. I work for a small nonprofit that hosts events and we sell our tickets online. A lot of the older folks don’t like buying online because they don’t trust it, so they call in and buy the tickets over the phone from me. What they don’t understand is that not only am I just buying their tickets online for them (it’s the only way to do it) but afterwards the computer always asks me if I want to save their credit card number for future purchases. I always say no, but it makes me worry about how easily I could just have all their information. They don’t realize that it might actually be safer for them to just make the purchase online themselves. (I mean, they are safe with me, but if someone less honest were helping them.)
@@Anonymouse428
Yep, good point!
@@Anonymouse428 Right, I didn't think of the nuisance phone call transaction. That's probably worse than using website and I can at start verify the online website is SSL encrypted.
There's one HUGE piece of information this story didn't mention. Skimming only works with the magnetic strip part of the card. The chip can't be skimmed, because it generates a one time use code every time it's used. Translation: only use the chip when making purchases and you'll be safe. Don't use the swipe method. Don't use the tap feature either, because that uses NFC and can be picked up by someone near by. Use the chip and you're good.
For the few places that ONLY have swipe technology, you should either 1. pay in cash or 2. simply go somewhere else.
@L D A lot of places like grocery stores and Walmart still don't accept the tap and pay. Which is bs but it's true. Had to figure out the hard way when I lost my card recently only gas stations like Shell accept it and Target did nowhere else.
@@angelmegatraveler Nah. Tapping means the signal/info can be _picked up_ ANYWHERE there's a 'catcher' around.
@@jaywholoveseveryone1721 no when you tap to pay it generates a one time code it’s not the same as using swiping your card
Why should we believe you ? You could be a skimmer scammer too!!!
Incorrect. Chip card data can be cloned and encoded to be reused on a cloned chip card. Chip cards are not dynamic as that would require chip readers to rewrite data back to the card as new data for the next transaction. The chip data on the card is there regardless and can be cloned very easily. Good point on the NFC transactions, as those can be picked up easily.
I use a privacy card at times, and other times I use a prepaid (Chime, Varo, etc.) and load what money I need on it for weekly spending. The rest goes into savings not tied to any cards.
Super glue a small lego to the outside face of the skimmer so that the mold fitted skimmer case doesn't fit.
GREAT idea!!!!!!
You’re going place bro
Want to know what’s funny… I do this for a living and that would totally work. Especially if it’s randomly placed. It would force me to alter the metal/plastic shell, which would be too random to replicate properly. Too bad most of us use deep insert style skimmers which are impossible to see. It may slow you ever so slightly as you insert your card but people never realize. What they didn’t mention here is the deep insert skimmers require a separately installed camera to capture your pin… the exception are credit cards where we assume the area zip codes so it doesn’t matter but for atms it’s a must. The Cameras are placed usually in light fixtures or the molding above the keypads. The downfall is the camera requires a shitload of battery life so we only get 48 hoursish of footage. Then we have to recover it and the skimmer for the info to sync the photos and skimmed card data. There are some boss scammers who use Bluetooth for the skimmer but no one around me has made the camera that’s a BT enabled set up. We travel all over the US so people are never safe. Businesses and banks closest to main roads or highway exits are king. We also use RF readers to gather chip information in crowds but no one yet (around me) has made a RF skimmer, but someone will make one eventually. Good luck people, the more you know… the hustle continues.
@Mitch M lego, any piece of plastic would defeat a desired tight molded fit. Harder type of plastic like CD MUSIC CASE plastic is better. Low temp thermal plastics like DVD cases or milk jugs plastics aren't the best for this idea.
Our local gas station has these stupid fuzzy sticker pets stuck to his machine. I once asked why he had them there and he laughed and said “not cuz I like how they look, that’s for sure. They can’t put a skimmer on top of that”. I don’t fuss about the lil fuzzy guys anymore lol.
Be careful at self-checkouts too. It’s happening in the grocery stores too.
What? Seriously? Okay.
i use cash only 💀 only clowns put their money in the banks and use cards
@@emotion_gfx yes, one of my neighbors received an alert from her credit card company approving a 2nd purchase roughly 15 minutes after she had received her alert from purchasing her groceries.

Usually construction workers have identified company names on their hard hats or vests. SOP for most companies.
And may look like they work and aren’t in clean cut “YMCA” gear. 😂

Using the construction vest to commit crimes is also on the rise. Don't trust just anybody wearing a vest, verify they're legitimate.
I wish they would've shown us how to distinguish skimmers rather than explaining briefly.
I remember hearing about this happening at gas stations years ago. The major tip I heard about was look for the security tape that is there. If it's disconnected/cut then it probably was tampered with. Obviously, it's not a 100% safeguard but it's a sign if it's been messed with.
Watch out for the cashiers they are in on this too. Also watch at gas stations if u used your card at the pump someone else will pull up right after u to try and get your info
So true some of them are
Employees are sometimes the biggest thieves too. One photocopied my check years ago and used the check info to go to my bank and try to take out 900 bucks. The schemer even had my signature down somewhat but the bank teller got a bad vibe from her and asked her questions and said she would talk to the bank manager. They pulled the photo and we discovered she worked at the hair salon where I went to.

Criminal’s have nothing to fear. The punishment needs to be severe enough to deter criminals.
Ah this ain’t Dracula days.
This is why I still prefer old fashioned cash. 🌟
I didn’t know people were still using the swipe feature. I see them everywhere, but I only see customers tapping or using the chip reader.
Not all cards have that feature
SNAP cards have the swipe only and here in Oregon, a single mom has has her benefits stolen TWICE now by skimming.
I work in retail. Most people use tap to pay (like Apple Pay) but there are people who still prefer to insert the chip. Certain cards unfortunately are also swipe or insert only, especially SNAP/EBT.
Always use Apple pay
They need to remove the mag strip. Inserting the card into a reader to read the chip likely gives the reader the information on your mag strip too.
Court - "we have you on camera placing the device"

lol
“Allegedly” “suspected” while they have them on camera doing it. Pleads “Not Guilty” while showing him do it. Here’s a thought, start sending these scumbags to prison for 20 years and stop giving them probation. It’s almost like the Government wants them out of jail.
Sometimes the merchants are in on the crime. I found a gas pump had been tampered with at a Shell gas station in my area. I went in to report it to the merchant. They came out and looked at it and said there was nothing wrong with the pump. However, the seal on the pump had been broken and there was a small screw in the pump cover that was protruding. None of the other pumps were like that and before I noticed the problem, I tried to use the pump but it wouldn’t recognize my fuel rewards cards which is what made me look closer at the pump. None of the other pumps were in that condition and the other pump I ended up using recognized my fuel reward card, seal was intact and didn’t appear to had been tampered with. The attitude and dismissiveness of the merchant made very suspicious! Which I conclude to mean that they may be in on some of these crimes!
Lol gas station employees aren’t getting access to skimmers they we’re definitely just being lazy and didn’t want to deal with it lol
I don't swipe my card ANYWHERE without pulling on the card reader first! I do it in front of people so if something was to get captured ... There are witnesses!!
Hello beautiful can I ask you a question?
I was at the gas station today and was upset that the app wasn’t working so I had to swipe my card; this is the main reason why I don’t like using my physical card. Before swiping, I checked the card reader. Sad days we’re living in.
Hey at least it’s not the dark ages.
There needs to be more than one employee working at these stores!
There needs to be cameras near these machines since they're everywhere else!
WAIT !!!!!! Where are these thieves getting the “SKIMMER” ???? Who makes these “SKIMMERS”??? Why aren’t those COMPANIES that make the “SKIMMERS” getting arrested? …..That could put an end to these crimes!!!!!
My thoughts exactly! Where are they getting the skimmers from is my question. You're right about the fact that it could put and end to the crimes if investigators would start with the companies making them.
They are taking genuine parts from credit card readers and repurposing them, making them look legitimate, with software to hold information until they can get ahold of it and transfer it, usually by taking it off a usb or wirelessly. It's not what you're thinking, rather they purposefully reverse engineer the technology to make these. It's no ones crime except the scammers.

The magnetic strip on credits cards was supposed to be abolished years ago. That is the info that is "skimmed". Skimmers can clone the card with an identical mag strip and use it where the point of sales system accepts a mag strip. Chip readers, and most of those are contactless today, cannot be "skimmed". Most of the world abandoned mag strips, the US keeps postponing the mag strip deadline. Not sure why that is, but it would stop this crap instantly.
Hi Mr. Ciaran Murphy Sir,
for us to send you the package in your name, can you please comment here and give us your physical address my friend
THANKS Have a great day
It is because of the expense of changing out the legacy readers combined with reconfiguring all the cards to be chip only. A study concluded that the fraud is actually cheaper to pay than to reconfigure the entire systems to prevent it. This is why it will be a slow walk to chip everything - hackers will also be more creative with gaining access to chip data.
I imagine it's the same reason why we do everything: somehow it's helping the wealthy corporations make more money from us. Fixing it would cut profits somehow.
@@grayisgood I am sure the actuaries at Visa and Master Card have figured that the point of sale replacement cost is higher than the cost of skimmed cards. That’s why Big banks are about to have digital wallets
I know people from both sides of the industry. Sometimes the retailers knows about it or is actually in on it. Whenever feasible please use the “tap” system.
One other tip: There's a sticker seal on gas pumps that you can check where the machine is opened. if that sticker is damaged or broken, don't use the pump and notify the gas station attendant.
Switch to mobile pay or use a virtual debit/credit card like privacy. A lot of mobile payment methods use a one time virtual cc number for that specific purchase. If the signal is captured it cannot be reused. Or just use cash.

The largest skimmers in the usa are at all the 7-11's. Every store has a skimmer installed by 7-11 itself. I cannot prove that the company did this, but it has happened to me too many times.
Who do these people think they can get away with it when there is a camera literally right in front of them?
Because they can. Fact.
This is why when your at McDonald’s drive threw you use cash. Don’t hand them your cc.
Cash is the most secure form of payment there is.
I have switched to paying for all purchases with CASH. I carry one credit card for use in a genuine emergency.
Crazy how in stores like Walmart I can not pay with my phone nor tap a card to pay
Gas stations and convenience stores should check machines daily and Make it part of their responsibility
How about maybe implementing a mandatory lunch time skimmer check?
A couple of tips:
Never use a debit card at a gas station. It’s connected to your bank accounts and getting any fraudulent withdrawals back is a Royal pain.
If you use a credit card, use the one with the lowest limit. My Costco membership card is a Citi credit card with a very low limit. So if they skim it while I’m pumping gas (typically at Costco), I’m only at risk for a small amount.
With footage that blurry I'm amazed anyone was caught at all. This footage belongs on an episode of COPS from 1999.
How is this so easy for them to remove this piece off of the machine-crazy you can’t have anything or do anything now a days. May God Bless Us All.
This is why I stopped using my debit card. My accounts have been hit multiple times. I always use credit cards now so they steal the banks money, not mine.

Happened to me 7 years ago. Since then, we only use our credit cards and learned how to maximize our cash back from it at the same time. All credit cards are paid off either biweekly or monthly so makes the cash back really worth it 👍
i think they can combat skimmers by.
1. make the terminal clamshell design so that you have to place the card into the machine similar to the slide roller device used in the 70s and 80s .
advantage: you can see a skimmer , maybe even skimmer cant be placed without interfering with clamshell closure.
2. make the terminals much bigger so it can house the mechanism used at some atms where you feed the card in sideways and it is drawn into the reader and the reading is done internally.
3. require terminal makers to inflate the costs of the terminal really high so the criminals cant afford the terminal to practice on.
the reason that the fake cell phone tower the stingray costs half a million and sold to police is to prevent criminals from using it to easily jam cell phones and/or learn from it and defeat it.
most cards have chips except the food and ebt cards dont have any non chip gif cards and food catds no chip
4) Throw the f-ing crooks in jail.
Very informative thank you GMA
And they say our internet is safe to bank ! Ha!!!!!
I wish more stores had the screen tap option its simple and easy
So what can we actually do about this and prevent it from happening to us
Warning for those sick people.
Also be careful when swiping your card at fast food restaurants and things.
I had one guy in the drive thru at Taco Bell try to scan my card with his cellphone.
You're absolutely 100% right! People gotta be careful at the drive-thru nowadays. Unfortunately, sleezy crooks do this everyday. Good thing you're aware, stay safe.
Need to look for attached items above the keypad too. They are putting thin objects that look like the mirrors or look like atm machine surfaces above looking down at the keypads. above that look at your card numbers and watch you type your pin number in from above. They don't have to skim the stripes no more.
Simple, go only places that use tap-to-pay and keep cards LOCKED until used, then relock. It's fool-proof. A locked card cannot be used ANYWHERE, online, by phone, or in person. Locked is LOCKED. They could even HAVE your card and it would not work.
Store employees should pay attention.
It’s not their job.
