- "Spirits in the Material World" is a song by the British rock trio The Police, written by Sting. It is the opening track for their 1981 album Ghost in the Machine. It was released as a single in 1981 and reached No. 12 in the United Kingdom and No. 11 in the US in early 1982.
Andy Summers' presence on the studio track is considerably less pronounced than on the vast majority of Police songs, and in fact, Sting wanted to record it without him entirely. Having written the song on a synthesizer, he wanted for it to use synthesizer instead of guitar, and to play the synthesizer part himself. Summers thought the synthesizer part should be replaced by guitar, and after considerable argument, they compromised by recording the part on both instruments, with a mix such that the synthesizer drowned out much of Summers's guitar. In live performances this part was played on guitar only, with synthesizer used only for background chords. The bass part for the song is distinctively complex, with music producer and cognitive psychologist Daniel Levitin writing that it "takes this rhythmic play to such an extreme that it can be hard to tell where the downbeat even is." The track was recorded at Air Studios Montserrat.
The lyrics comment on the nature of man's existence and the failure of his earthly institutions.
"Spirits in the Material World" eventually saw single release in 1981 as the follow-up to "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", making it the third single from Ghost in the Machine in Britain and the second in America. Billboard called it "less mainstream yet more captivating" than "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and said that "the repetitive rhythm creates a hypnotic effect." Record World also compared it to "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," saying that it "[takes] reggae one step further into the pop world" and calling it a "hypnotic cut." The single, while not as successful as its predecessors, peaked at No. 12 in Britain and No. 11 in America. It was followed up by "Secret Journey" in America.
Lyrics:
Oh!
There is no political solution
To our troubled evolution
Have no faith in constitution
There is no bloody revolution
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Our so-called leaders speak
With words, they try to jail ya
They subjugate the meek
But it's the rhetoric of failure
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Where does the answer lie?
Living from day to day
If it's something we can't buy
There must be another way
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Bless you for understanding this. A lot of cats don't know what Sting was trying to convey. It's a vibration.
Nice work.
👍😎
Excellent, the parrot love it !
Love it! I wish Sting played it live like that. Too hard to play and sing, I guess. Spot on work!!
Really nice. Check Rick Beato's interview with Stewart Copeland if you haven't already. They reference this track, and it was in large part initially composed on a little, low-function Casio mini keyboard. Of course, the other thing about this line is that Sting had to sing at the same time as playing it.
Sounds exactly the same as studio amazing
Thank you!
Nice job !! Nailed the feel of it !!
Thank you!
Welll done mate, really enjoyed that and I'm a Police fanatic.
Thank you
Nice work. Solid!
Thank you!
Analysing this, The key to this one is the fact that stewart is not setting the beat, if anything the guitar is the mainstable of the beat, the added ninth chord at the start actually sounds like its an intro chord before the beat starts counting but actually you start the count on the add 9th and it adds up to 8 beats per bar, having said this the overall timing of the song can be tapped out on your lap as a very fast ska beat, although it doesnt sound that way, the reason it is so hard to count is that fact that there are two rythmic structures in play, comprising of the bass and drums interplay with each other (copeland trying to follow stings idiosyncratic bass and play to it, and the guitar which is following a straight uniform 8 beats to the bar. the reason it sounds so weird but incredible, is usually a band will play to the drummer and not (in this case) the drummer play to the bass, (which in turn is failrly freeform and not uniformly syncopated) ie not playing on the beat.
Another great ride tonight.....I recall this on them long rides listening to 106 KHQ Charlevoix!
Wow, the bass sound is amazing🔥🔥🔥🇦🇷
Great work Justin!

Thank you!
Great riff played well. I have a Spirit, nice little bass, wish I had the original carbon graphite one.$$$$😮
I love this bass line, good choice and very well played! I didn´t know the story behind the synthesizer in this song, I never liked it, I prefer the live version with Andy's guitar on top.
It is not a Synth... Well it is a Synth, but a Synth pedal for Andy's Guitar. That sound is produced by Roland Guitar Synthetiser Pedal
@ It's a keyboard. Sting wrote the song on a portable keyboard travelling between gigs. In the video for the song he plays an arpeggiated riff on keys.
@@thewomble1509True, a casio as Stewart Copeland revealed in his interview with Rick Beato a few days ago. 👍
