I didn’t realize KBAR Was using a different steel. I’m only familiar with the original. A buddy of mine went into the marine Corps. He sent me one I believe from Paris Island. It’s 48 years old now. I still keep it in a rifle scabbard. I have seen the new ones like this. Also other people talking about D2. You gave the best explanation. Appreciate your research and knowledge. Stay safe, my friend.
If you enjoy D2, Knives of Alaska uses high quality D2. Though most of their knives are geared toward hunting/skinning, they have a six inch camp knife geared toward outdoor use. I use a Pronghorn Hunter as more of an EDC fixed blade and the edge retention is awesome.
To have a blade made of D2 back in the 80’s, you’d have a premium steel. The Ka-Bar D2 Extreme is in my top 5 favorite blades. I own two of them. I had to purchase the second one after Ka-Bar changed the side of the serrations from left to right handed almost two decades ago. Both have held up EXTREMELY well!
Another excellent video! Your throwing ability is even more impressive. I have my Camillus US Vietnam Kabar. Time to invest in another one. Have a relaxing Thanksgiving!
Ive been using one of those in the woods in eastern tenessee for about 7 years its a great all around knife Ive chopped small stumps down to the ground in the atv trail as well as cleared and maintained that trail with one of these. It seems to stay very sharp and resharpens easily. Got the tip of a chainsaw stuck in a big tree i used this Ka-bar to chop out some extra wood to free it.Its my only fixed blade in D2 Ka-bar did it right. Great knife for the money !
Hello, I just found your channel. Thank you for sharing. I really need this information. I am a single woman looking to buy some land in the near future and the security would be a concern. So I am a fan now and will be watching all of your videos as much as I can to learn to protect myself and thank you
Thank you for sharing this video with us my friend! I don’t own KBars in my collection. Primarily concentrated on another manufacturer with similar designs. This one looks interesting though! D2, well heat treated, can be a great steel for a number of blades designs.
D2 is a great steel. The thing with D2 is that it has to be heat-treated perfectly. Yes, you are correct. When you buy D2 from a Chinese company, it is highly likely that either it is not heat treated properly or it is not D2 at all. This is why custom D2 knives can run you hundreds of dollars. It has a particular way that it needs to be heat treated and it has to be done right. I own one of these from K bar and it is a solid knife. I love it. if you buy D2 It is best to go with a reputable company.
I just received mine yesterday! Man i didn't realize how good and natural this knife feels in hand, mine is the straight edge version. The weight and balance is awesome on this. If you had to get this thing out in a hurry, and could definitely stab & slice faster than any of those heavy as a brick survival knives of it's size. Also the tang is a bit wider than what we see at the bottom. For whatever reason it's tapered at the very bottom where we can see. So my conclusion Excellent knife for what it's designed for.
I bought, last month, a 1998 Next Generation Ka-Bar, with a bead blasted finish and in 12C27 steel. This is my choise for bugout. I´m a bit critical, about D2 steel in general.
I checked out the links in your description box and have to say I’m impressed with the price they are offering this knife at. I’m gonna have to order one.
I bought a dozen FBKNIFE By GANZO Model FH11HS D2 steel folders and they are a hell of a bargain for under $25 each. I've been using and abusing them for the past 3 years and they never need more than a light hone.
Wow, that's pretty cool . I've never been very knowledgable about the different types of steel other than personal experience between my cheap vs expensive knives . I do have a classic KaBar which I love but it's never been super sharp , and I don't think that was really ever a priority for it . This would be a great knife to own .
My only criticism of Ka-Bar are the serrations. If you're doing any bushcraft/survival, you'll certainly end up whittling things. (Shelter pegs, figure 4 traps, cord notches, etc.) Serrations will just chew things up, instead of making the smooth clean surfaces you rely on. So consider buying the plain edge if you're intentions are more outdoor use.
It’s really about the improvements of the handle that sells me, the metal hand gaurds on the original model are prone to bending. I’d hate to say it but the rubber handle is also better than the leather albeit not as pretty. I got the Ontario 498 because that’s what was in the armory when I was in. Good luck finding one now. I’ll get the dogs head when I can afford it.
Real D2 steel from a credible maker is not some rust proof stainless steel, but it takes a incredible edge and holds it well. One of my favorites along with 1095.
Hey Daniel, you might also want to do a review of the Halfbreed blades, made partly in Australia (shameless patriotic plug here) but 2 factors to consider. 1: Most of them are made from D2 steel, and 2: Their handles and scabbards are made in U.S.A. Oh yeah, . . . .Still dig that accent mate. Greetings from Australia.
@@411Outdoors It's not that hard to learn, and the best way to start would be to hold out a Halfbreed L.S.K 2 knife and say, " that's not a knife, . . . . THIS is a knife".
Thats what I am talking about. Looks like my old Tanto KBAR USA made I got in 2009 pre deployment. Still have it,looks in very good condition. Not sure what steel they used back than 1056 or something possibly? Funny, that i can't wash off Afghan dirt out of the Kaydex sheat it come with. Serrations portion of knife still super sharp.
My understanding is there are multiple quality levels of D2. It has been around for nearly 100 years now. Lower quality blades in D2 can still be that steel, but probably are of a much lower quality then what you get from proper metal forgers.
Outdoors55 was just discussing D2, regarding the Walmart Bugout knock off. Getting D2 from other than a very dependable company , like KABAR, is questionable on several levels. I've had good luck with imported D2 but I've not put them to very hard use. Next spring I will. Generally speaking, I think you get what you pay for, even if the only actual difference is an assurance of quality.
Looks Badass to me, I've never had a problem with D2 Steel, my CS Leatherneck Tanto is D2 and it's a tank. The Tomars website says the Kabar is full tang?..🤔 (Edit) So I ordered the straight edge Kabar from Tomars, because of your review and recommendation.
The Kabar D2 extreme is a hot seller where i live every time i go in to camp store its always sold out would even go to say the kabar D2 sells faster than the classic USMC Kabar.
Genuine question, how in the world can the Ka-Bar blade be a fighting blade, when the tip is pointing like 30 degrees to one side, the tip is not along the blade centerline, and the false edge is not sharpened? Not to mention the blade seems to be wider than the average gap between the ribs. I know it was chosen to be used by our military, but the blade design goes against everything I know about fighting knives. I do understand the need for the thick spine and the width of the blade for utility purposes, but why did they make the tip that way? Seems like M3 trench knife would be a much better option for a fighting knife that is capable of doing utility/survival tasks. Even the Glock FM78 is more suitable for fighting in my opinion.
I hate ka-bars that have the seration at the base of the cutting edge. Mine is like that. Makes it usless for bushcraft. Over a straight edge belt knife. Mine is surgical grade stainless. But the company advertises it's 440A stainless. Surgical grade. It's made by cutco. Shortly after I bought it they came out with a knife that would be great for all round outdoors knife. And they also released a hunting knife. And you can select straight edge or serrated on that. I just wish I could have ordered a straight edge kabar from them.
Just quirious and your opinion. Is the full tang on the the kabar d2 extreme wider at the pomel? How strong/tuff is the pomel on the d2 extreme? In your unbiased opinion how do you think it compares to the Brave, including pomel strength?
The brave is no doubt a crazy solid tang. Where I love this one is ultimately ergonomics. The tank and the handle on the brave feels cold and empty compared to this, but that’s just my personal opinion. Kabar is reputable and the warranty is forever. If the brave could somehow wrap the same ergonomic handle around that thing that it has, it would be unbeatable. I think the pomel is super solid on the Kabar
D2 has been around for a long time. I can see the price being cheaper now than it used to be. The truth though is in the pudding. If it’s hard to sharpen and holds an edge for a long time there’s a good chance it is D2 and was hardened properly. That being said I don’t trust any claim on anything from China or the big importers like Amazon. Knives are one of the easiest products to fake.
