  • The Diamondback Recoil Comp is a budget friendly full suspension 29er. It's built with inexpensive components, however it performs better than the price tag would suggest. With very few quality full suspension bikes coming in under the $1000 price range, the recoil comp is a bit of an anomaly. Not only is it full suspension, but it's also a 29er, which is even more rare in this price range (for relatively good quality) with full suspension. This video is a quick bike check to go over the components and overall performance.

    This DB is an excellent bike... 400 miles with it, no problems, very fast, accurate shifts, and very good disk brakes. Aluminium frame, 33 pounds.. in general good components and very well constructed and nice design. Tires? Ok...US$699

      Awesome! It's definitely hard to beat for the money. A truly capable full suspension for this price is almost unheard of! Have you considered a tire change?

      How has the fork held up on jumps and downhill?

    We just bought this bike. It's my sons first FS bike so he is as thrilled with it as I was about the price. This is definitely the most bang you can get for $649. While the rear air shock will suffice, the front suspension fork is horrible. I used the suntour upgrade program to get a new air shock on its way. The frame is awesome and the wheels are decent but the shifters and derailers are not great. Shifting is slow and not always accurate. We will see how they hold up. Overall I feel this bike is a steal at $650, but it's still not a $3000 bike. It is however a good platform to upgrade over time as the frame is the real deal. NOTE:this bike also ships with hydraulic disc brakes- a feature usually found in higher end bikes.

      I completely agree with your assessment. Its a decent platform to start with and build upon. There are only a few full suspension bikes under $1000 that I'd consider to be comparable with this one, and I have yet to find a 29er that I'd consider. I am curious... what fork are you upgrading to?

      Budget friendly biking we chose the suntour epixion 9 lo which was 289 through the suntour upgrade program. I dont have the shock yet so i can't comment on its performance. With the shock, the total price of the bike is $938. Well under $1000.

      Good choice! I have the Epixon 9 LO-R on my CO-OP (27.5 version). It's an awesome fork and a HUUUGGGEEE improvement over the XCR. I actually recently did a video covering it, as well as a video about changing the Epixon travel (in case you're interested). ua-cam.com/video/v81XJh8sn4s/v-deo.html

      ok. I'll check it out. You are a little farther ahead with your build than I am. We should stay in touch. Today I'm going to try to dial in the rear shock for my son since he is only 113 lbs . We rode last night and the lazy hand band showed the shock only compressed about 1/3 of the total travel. So add another $26 to my build price for the air shock pump!

      @budgetfriendlybiking207  7 років тому

      You'll need the shock pump for the Epixon as well. It doesn't come with a pump either unfortunately!

    You said you would upgrade the tires. What would you recommend and are there any opportunities to get wider tires like a 2.5?

    • @budgetfriendlybiking207
      @budgetfriendlybiking207  7 років тому

      I believe a 2.5 would likely fit in the front, but the rear might be a tight fit. I can't say for certain because I've never attempted it, so this is based off of opinion only.
      I'm personally a big fan of WTB tires, and Maxxis tires. I currently use a WTB breakout 2.3 on the rear, and a WTB vigilante 2.3 on the front of my CO-OP. They have really decent grip on the climbs, and stick well in turns for most conditions. I'll be running the exact same combination on my Mission come springtime. I run Maxxis mammoth (fat only) tires on my fat bike and like them a lot. For Maxxis tires on the Recoil, I'd suggest the minions. They get rave reviews and I believe you could do a 2.3/2.4 rear and a 2.5 front combination. The minions are front and rear specific, so keep that in mind if they are something you consider.

    Should i purchase this or get a hardtail trek marlin 7? I plan on hitting trails and cruising on street pavement in nyc. Has your chains been skipping?

    • @budgetfriendlybiking207
      @budgetfriendlybiking207  7 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, I don't have experience with the Trek marlin 7, so I don't think I can confidently direct you towards one or the other. What I can say is that hard tails tend to be better equipped in this price range, and tend to deliver power more efficiently to the ground. Full suspension is nice though, because it'll soak up bumps/rocks/roots, and help to keep the tires on the ground while you're riding. As far as the chain, I didn't experience any issues while I had the bike, and my friend that rides it has indicated no problems.

      Budget friendly biking do you think that this bike could be upgraded to a 120mm fork?

    • @budgetfriendlybiking207
      @budgetfriendlybiking207  7 років тому +2

      I'm confident there are 120mm forks that will fit this bike, however I am unsure about the frame. Added travel will cause a slacker head tube angle and can cause additional (excessive) stress on the frame, and may end in damage. My best suggestion is to go to the DiamondBack website and click on the chat bubble in the bottom right of the page and ask. I've used it before and they're usually very helpful.

      Looks like DiamondBack is in the process of releasing all of their new models, so there are quite a few of their previous models on a deep discount (including the recoil comp). $630 is a great price! I just looked and with a corporate discount on the DB page it's currently $649!
