It is so assuring, and refreshing to see you with your never ending, youthful enthusiasm doing all of these fun and cool things. You do it all with such a genuine, and positive attitude. The simple yet perfect philosophy of being a good person for goodness sake(and everything that comes along with it). To accept and adapt to the things that annoy me (or worse, affect me to my detriment), it has been pacifying to my stresses and anxiety that I allow in my mind. Morning from the Okanagan sir! Good stuff as usual on the profiles. Last year buddy gifted me a bigger HB Hudson Bay axe that his late father bought in the '70's and never used much. Upon close inspection I saw it was actually a hollow grind, so that led me to trying a few different heads with a hollow grind to see what I could learn. They don't seem to spit as well as expected, but I'm thinking they cut "a bit" better than a convex. Likely not enough to make a difference, but it's an interesting rabbit hole to head down. Stay well.

Thank you for this information, I always cleaned my axes with rubbing alcohol then oiled the bit followed up by a wiping of linseed or flaxseed oils, zero varnish or wax. In a real pinch vegetable oil will work, but needs cleaning off in a shorter time

Billy, It’s cool to see the Killinger French curve handles as well as the ones you make from boards. I had a old school bushman great uncle who used to make them out of black ash bolts my dad would get him from the bush. He would split them by hand with wedges the use a fro to slab off pie shaped pieces he would make the handles out of with a draw knife. His handles were skinny, curvy and strong with very little run out. All the best from Ontario

I was looking to get an axe for felling and splitting on the homestead. The deeper I got, the more I discovered there's a ton I dont know about axes!! Your videos are great! Started looking at the more vintage axeheads rather than just buying one made on a current production line.. Still lots to learn.
The Killinger “Snake Juice” is thick and amazing! On handles and the head it looks amazing. Also, the bottles are small but it’s thick and I’ve done 10 handles and the bottle still full. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge Billy!
My job when I turned 6 was to split wood for the house ,stove and heater. We’d cut it to length with my dad on a saw bench ran by the tractor. People say I have big hands and broad shoulders, probably why.
I'm definitely starting to respect there's different axes for different jobs. I like a maul, but when I pick up a old HB Tassie I love it. I've snapped 2 handles recently. I've learnt the hard way but no I know 👍 I'll probably use my maul to split in half and then go after it with the HB after Nice video as always!

Are sharpen my split necks on the very end so I can pick up wood and yet I don't sharpen the rest of it quite as much but I do sharpen all my axes and splitting walls and my steel splitting ax I sharpen the crap out of that so it does a very good job of splitting and chopping by the way I love your show it's always positive I find it very educational
Glad to see you doing good buckin. Ya it’s hot everywhere. I noticed it is getting very hard to find a good cruiser double bit axe. Or any double bit. How do you find yours being on an island.
Medium steel wool is great for removing sap from heads and handles.👍 Over winter I cover the heads with a light coat of clean motor oil or general purpose oil like 3 in 1.
My storage situation gets pretty damp in the winter and condensation happens. When I oil the handles(danish oil or linseed or teak oil) I also give a light coat to the metal parts, it cures on the metal into a nice anti-rust coating that doesn't pick up dirt, same for my pruners and handsaws. It wears of where rubbing happens but those spots don't need protection anyway. For sap I use something like turpentine or kerosene/paint thinner with small fraction of the same oil. Now, the fun bit of chemistry is that Watco Danish oil is a mix of linseed oil(or was it tung?) with a few percent modified rosin (Esterified, aka reacted with an alcohol using a catalyst); rosin is the solid stuff left after you boil the turpentine out of pine pitch. Boiled linseed has a tiny dash of cobalt and manganese added to catalyze faster curing. Teak oil is either linseed or tung oil with UV protection. Esterfied rosins are also used in bar oil to make them more tacky. (And many other uses in adhesives, coatings, even making wax more pliable. But there are many different alcohols used for different properties.)
Doctor Billy Ray Smith, I want to thank you for all of your chainsaw, I mean power saw, chain sharpening videos. This past Thursday I removed a stump with my power saw, wedges and sledge hammer. I usually like to burn out my stumps, but this one literally sat in the middle of my wood pile and burning it out was not an option. I dug out from around the stump but still managed to knock the point off of the tooth. I must have sharpened my chain 6 times (nothing left at this point). Anyway, I recalled how you talked about getting the gullet and then pulling up on the file to sharpen the chisel side of the tooth. I could literally watch the edge of the tooth curl into a wire and then the point would come right back. After figuring this out, I would head back to the stump and watch the long sawdust come rolling out of the cut. Thank you once again - cheers

Hey buddy have ya seen the Stihl large splitting AXE ? It’s a beast weight wise but a great splitter for the hard stuff. For a few years my buddy from Montana always uses it in Elk hunting camp And just loves it ! Ya definitely need to profile it loose some material and sharpen it , but man it’s a brute has a wrap around steel handle guard that’s not just for looks ya see. I’ve had one for 5 yrs and last October I tried to give mine to him as he burns wood living in Montana and loves the axe . He refused to take it and said he’d just buy one . I said yeah ya can do that but it’s not the same as stock and won’t be the same . So when we were packing up camp I snuck in the back of his truck . “Spread the Love “ I Just purchased a new one and will be profiling, sharpening, removing some material taking the stupid lacquer/paint off . I understand why the Manufacturers put a finish for the store shelves but man ya think just a light coat lol . I’ll be sanding and oiling the handle with linseed oil or Balistol .I appreciate the knowledge you spread and the love ! Keep Swing , DS
I think back in the day that all metal tools had a light coat of oil and waxpaper wrap for transportation and storage. That new lacquer finish is a pain to remove.

Do you have any recomandation for me. I will use it mostly for spliting but If a can get an all around axe I would love it. Thank you very much
If you would, when talking about , showing Tassies. Tell what they are. I have a HYTEST Craftsman from the 1950s that looks like one you were showing. I'm hesitating going below 25° bit bevel on my tassies due to living in Interior Alaska. The Cold and not wanting to chip or break a bit on a fine old axe. But I do get tired of then not being multi purpose. I have a HYTEST Forged that is 25°or less that I will try . Hope I don't chip it ! I run 30" or 29" handles mostly.
Hey Buckin I gotta Titan Series 40 chainsaw from back in the 50s. Handle on the bar for the second guy. If you think it would make a good fixup video, I let you have it for free...just shipping costs. Motor free and has loads of compression, but no spark.Think it needs a coil.

Do the axes you make split as well as a fiskars axe? Or possibly better? What are your thoughts on those?. I love the look of the ones you make but i would be affraid of busting the wooden handle. With the fiskars i dont have that worry.

Hey buckin' can you make a video on how to get the proper axe. Handle lenght and weight for a person? Lots think a longer handle and heaviest axe head is the way to go!
Just started thinking about that recently. The different size /weight /age of a person can be a good reason to be having smaller handle or lighter axe. Custom fit for larger hands or taller faller.
Billy AKA Buckin..You might want to do an axe training type video for the youngsters..Proper stance.swing. safety concerns etc so they dont think its ok to go out and free swing axes..You have experience and control but im afraid some of these kids watching you might think its ok to just free swing an ax that might be too heavy for them.. Just an observance since i trained others in equipment use..Thanks Brother... :)

I’ve used the CMT orange cleaner for saw blades and stuff. Its for woodworking but it works well on removing this stuff from axes.

I have a HYTEST Craftsman from the 1950s that looks like one you were showing.
I'm hesitating going below 25° bit bevel on my tassies due to living in Interior Alaska. The Cold and not wanting to chip or break a bit on a fine old axe.
But I do get tired of then not being multi purpose.
I have a HYTEST Forged that is 25°or less that I will try . Hope I don't chip it !
I run 30" or 29" handles mostly.

Do the axes you make split as well as a fiskars axe? Or possibly better? What are your thoughts on those?. I love the look of the ones you make but i would be affraid of busting the wooden handle. With the fiskars i dont have that worry.

Hey buckin' can you make a video on how to get the proper axe. Handle lenght and weight for a person? Lots think a longer handle and heaviest axe head is the way to go!
Just started thinking about that recently. The different size /weight /age of a person can be a good reason to be having smaller handle or lighter axe. Custom fit for larger hands or taller faller.

Billy AKA Buckin..You might want to do an axe training type video for the youngsters..Proper stance.swing. safety concerns etc so they dont think its ok to go out and free swing axes..You have experience and control but im afraid some of these kids watching you might think its ok to just free swing an ax that might be too heavy for them.. Just an observance since i trained others in equipment use..Thanks Brother... :)
