Once convinced a semi intoxicated buddy that he wasn’t swinging the ax hard enough into a pine and thats why he couldn’t get a good bite of wood. It was an 8lb maul. Good times.

The thing about a lighter axe is that kinetic energy is Half the Mass times V-squared. V squared, the velocity is far more important than the mass. If you can swing a pound axe twice as fast as a 6 pound axe, you're putting more energy into the tree and not wearing yourself out to boot. You're a smart man, my friend, keep up the good work!

    • @yoman2854
      @yoman2854 2 роки тому +1

Double the velocity would be 4x the energy (2 squared is 4). 6lb would have more energy.

@@yoman2854 haha it deleted the number 3 before I posted. I meant to say 3 pound axe twice as fast as a 6 pound axe, but sheer kinetic energy isn't the entire battle, there's also blade shape, sharpness, wood type etc. A lot going on really.

Same here. When I’m back home during the work week, I miss the farm and I miss the cabin. I miss the wood stove the most. I spend every free min I got at that place, winter especially cuz I work all summer cutting my wood, and my grandfathers wood, and then in the winter I go down there and just enjoy running the wood stove and scouting the property and keeping track of the deer. Idk what it is but the wood stove is relaxing. I love it, and the work that goes along w it.
So yeah, during the week when I’m away from that place, Spending time with Billy fills in the space when I’m away from the farm. The dude just has life figured out in a way that is pretty remarkable. Really admire this dude and his spirit. Truly a legend

Thank you, Buckin, for taking your time to show an important life skill to people who don't understand how important an axe is. My youngest son has decided to get into outdoor things, and he came inside today and told me that he cut a dead tree down in the backyard with an axe, and my heart dropped because he's never taken time to listen to me about the dangers in felling trees so I am trying to get him to watch some of your work. RIP, JED.

I remember splitting wood with a 3½lb axe with a buddy who used a 8lb maul back in our teenage years and at the end of the day our wood piles would look about the same. I remember him tiring out while I was catching up and whenever the day was done he'd be the 1st to call it a day and we were both Xtra large guys.

I am 66 and when I was 64 I got addicted to splitting wood with an ax and a maul. Fiskars 8 lb maul is my favorite tool of choice. but if someone had told me that after a heart attack and a stroke I would have literally gotten addicted to physical challenge of splitting wood with them all I would have told him they were totally insane that I never done it before in my life my son's always did all those playing wood and we usually use the hydraulic splitter the challenge of splitting red oak and what not with the mall and an accident just it's hard to explain only where I can say is addictive!!!

Hope the young guys hear your words. I get it, I was a tank when I was younger and did the stuff they say you shouldn’t and of course “ don’t worry about it, nothing will happen” and then you can’t walk. You can feel like a man while doing it smart. Learning to walk again is no joke people. It screws with your head pretty bad as well. My wife of 27 years loves my attitude now because of the more peaceful thing I put out. Anger gets you nowhere really when you think about it. I love my manual labor when I can do it, it’s very calming. Sitting in the woods, forest or even and retention pond with a few trees just helps to bring inner joy. Been looking for a beautiful piece of a tree to make a wood ball about the size of a volleyball. It’s something I will use in my meditation. It may sound off putting to some because it was for many years too me, however I imagine the air going in my lungs and the blood running through my veins. This kinda thing I have found to be beneficial too me. Enjoy what’s in front of you folks and give love and help to those around you whether you know them or not.

Buckin I believe as we get older we try to hang on to that young man we once were. It’s tough letting go of that. I have really struggled with it as of late. I believe you have grasped it very well sr. I am working on it. Just hate the thought of getting old because I have seen many of my family go from being very strong hard working men to just not being able to get out and go. Scared to death of that happening to me. Every day I try to go as hard as I used to and it hurts when I fail. Just can’t find find the right path to take. Thanks for the encouragement sr. Love to see the double bit axe at work. I have an old double bit from craftsman. It’s a double ring. Love it.

The 22cal were fine but when i shot off a 45cal the shell busted and i got shrapnel in the chest. It came out 5 years later. At 66 now and can't believe i could have done something that stupid. But i was never taught about bullets and guns. Had to learn the hard way.

I was not a convert until recently when I had 34 Alders and Spruce to process with an axe and hand saw this last fall and the only axe available to me was a 3lb chopper of sorts with a 28" handle. It might be my favorite axe now to do work with, and has also given me a newfound appreciation for other axes

And your trees grow so tall and straight!! Just beautiful!!! We got eastern white pines that grow 4-6 foot on the stump but they don’t get no where’s near as tall as your trees. And our trees definitely don’t grow as fast as yours. Some day before I die I wanna go to British Columbia and look at your super tall trees. Beastmode. That is a big tree. That double is awesome. I broke the handle on my boys axe and picked up a larger fiberglass handle axe. It’s great and I sharpened it real nice but I really liked having that boys axe. Need another handle. Thanks for another great video my friend

Long description... Just explaining my view point.
Yes, chopping them down is slow. My Husqvarna rancher makes easy-ish work of them (and two stroke smells like victory).
If you ever get the gonads to go outside, there is a certain amount of pride in actually putting in the work to physically chop a tree down. Hear it quake. Hear its death moan. You have to work with it, it speaks to you.
    It takes actual physical effort.
You hear it moan, you hear it fight gravity. You decide where the next blow needs to be. It fights you, it doesn't want to fall.
    It will fall.
When it does fall, it's not because I was a corporation that wanted the land, it fell because I needed it to. We're human. We need the resources, and the resources need us.
Deforestation is a myth used by people that want to control you. Don't be controllable. You be the judge of you, your conscience will guide you.

Glass and rocks pal. When the the weight is on the lean, and you hit it correct. Sounds like you're hitting glass, and rocks are falling.
Spin right round, then it sounds like slapping a flat table with your palm.
