I have quite a few drive pedals. Overdrives (soft clipping) and distortions (hard clipping). If I was stranded on an island and I had to pick one drive pedal to take with me it would be the JOYO British Sound pedal. Although it's billed as a hard clipping distortion pedal it does soft drive very well. $39.99 on Amazon...
For an overdrive the best one I've found is the AZOR Overdrive. The old green one. Perfectly EQ'd. For my liking at any rate.
I tried the Wampler Triumph and the Phenom. I've also tried a couple of REVV pedals too. I wasn't all that impressed.
You just don't need to spend $300 on a drive pedal anymore.
I've put together 16 pedal boards all with "budget" pedals and they all sound fantastic. I'd put 'em up against any rig. ANY rig.
And now for the other shoe. There is a video from Josh Scott (JHS) highlighting Behringer pedals where he divulges that he buys some of his components from Uli Behringer.
Yes. Your $400 (boutique) pedal has Behringer components in it.

I like the first one on the original setting. The others didn't sound any better and some were worse. This matches my experience trying to find a decent noise gate pedal. After BOSS, EHX and a few others, I settled on a $40 Donner mini pedal that works better than anything else I have tried in decades. I have 3 of them hooked up to various amps, and they are great.

Now, you know the difference between overdrive and distortion and then fuzz is a whole different beast.
You can get silicon or germanium or led clipping there’s a ton of options. Then you have your boost type stuff.
I’m a tube amp guy too so that’s another factor.
Stacking takes a specific order and can vary according to your taste.
I’m hearing more of a distortion than what you’re calling fuzz.
Fuzz is definitely more of a gnarly thing.
But when you have the right ones, that can actually work nice together….

I wonder if the lower end pedals have built in noise gating. The higher end ones seem to be noisier. That would affect your sustain in like, a ballad or something, you'd have to try it. I've got a low end ($35USD) DemonFX drive and it is really noisy, so that one isn't gated. I didn't like that timmy at all. I still haven't soldered that Aion Andromeda together. You've inspired me to do that today.
I'm starting to think the government should regulate drives and allowing only one circuit for drives, that way there will only be one drive to choose from. Called "the drive." Then we will only have to decide on one of the three authorized colors and we will all be much happier with our choices.
