I believe you could have restored the veneer finish by patching with veneer and on the smaller damage use a coloured epoxy glue .Then sand back using a hard sanding pad so you do not sand through the edges [that is an optional pad on Festool sanders] ,stain with a slightly darker colour [say walnut] and then finish with lacquer with walnut stain added to disguise the filled areas. Most veneer finishes can be restored using that approach. The Rogers Studio 1 and Export Monitors are lovely sounding speakers and worth trying to restore to original look.
