    From memory KEF supplied a kit of parts to the cabinet makers. They were dispatched direct to dealers to reduce costs. The repair woofer came conventional gasket. The spade terminals to help the wood workers. Nice speaker for low price in the day.

    HI Matt, quick question..... why are speakers made from MDF and not HDF? When I rebuilt my Ditton 25's I used HDF Because of a book I had on building speaker cabinets, can't remember the name.

    • @haycrossaudio5474
      @haycrossaudio5474 5 днів тому

      @@angeloluis4130 I believe the inner core of MDF is a little softer than HDF. That adds a bit if internal damping to MDF. This is one of the reasons MDF is popular plus its easy to work with. I've seen lots of testing done by various people and companies between MDF, chipboard, plywood etc and in all honesty there's not much in it

    Great video on the repair of speakers which have obviously had some abuse. I have heard a number of LS3/5As over the years and although I have never owned a pair, I am a bit of a fan. Last year I was in the market for a pair of "foot high" speakers as near-field monitors. Although the LS3/5As were at the top of my shopping list, after some auditioning, I bought a pair of ATC SCM7s. I have been doing the HiFi hobby for 50 years now and have somehow always ended up listening to British built speakers. (My absolute favourites are my Lowther horns but they don't fit on my desk-top.) Keep up the good work, Matt.

    4 x 2 foot ply mdf sandwich. I used buckets of water to hold them together whilst the glue set. Even so slightly bowed which looks good. Wicks stock. Terry at Loricraft Audio lent me his router and workshop to do the holes. I still talk with him. We both love Quad ESL. Loricraft is now Spendor SME.

    I found the 902-472 tweeter you like at a good price at CPC Farnell. 902-527 8 inch bass unit looks interesting. I have used one of that make 15 inch bass units with Eminence 12 Lta. The tweeter DT74/8 which was about efficient enough. 4 x 8 foot baffles. Quad 33/303 To use a better tweeter would have to be active. Considerable bass equalization. I had some BC1s around to remind me of correct sound. The tweeter did more than I imagined. Image width especially. First order cross. First order 15 inch. Eminence no filter. The only time I succeeded with a simple design. I had some Dynaco A25 that suggested the idea.

    Q. Does having a larger centre cap in the bass and midrange help with off axis response?

    • @haycrossaudio5474
      @haycrossaudio5474 6 днів тому

      @@AndrewNeilBaird Normally it's because of the size of the voice coil but in general from my data I would say yes it helps in the midrange. Doesn't really make any difference in the bass area as the wavelengths are so long. The Visaton drivers I use in my own HA Series have large centre caps. They have incredible off axis performance 🙂

    Nicely done once again. Regarding the mids.. Are those actually banana plug jacks .,? or spring push button? My pro sound JBL drivers with push button terminals for connection ., I simply use gold plated, speaker wire PINS, not banana plugs. Looks much better inside the speaker cabinet than up bunch of bare wire or a dirty tinned solder wire.

    French polisher/antique restorer here. We always use stripper for something like this that has been poly lacquered as sanding will give a patchy finish. If stripped and cleaned down well with a solvent after, you would get a uniform base to sand and finishing will colour up uniformly with minimal ghosting. The veneer on the top appears to be ash.

  • @jameshutton5979

    Try a print free brown paper bag and a fairly hot iron on the water stain before sanding.

    Yeah, those mini banana plug connectors on ATC drivers are really poor, given the quality of the drivers. I think it's a daft concession to professional use, so they can be swapped out easily. You talk about voltage drop across the length of the power cable as being a factor (~1:25), but with average copper that can't logically be a factor. Perhaps stick with the screening idea and compare screened 2.5mm Vs screened 0.5mm Vs unscreened 0.5mm

    I think the Omar rep was Charles Thompson who because of back pain was a bit miserable. That changed when describing how the speakers came about. The Omar version very different. Or so it seemed. Omar CR251 Dalesford and Peerless were very good and Omar Goring a Minimax type speaker. I went to the factory once. Quite impressive. I believe the family once made the famous Omar caravan?

    Its really like anything else. I know a guy who owns an expensive fishing boat that he only takes out about three times per year. For me, Id just rent the boat, and split the cost with friends. I rebuilt some budget RCA floor speakers as a way to learn more about how to do it. I figured, why not start with them, I won't be out much money if I mess them up. Its a hobby thing, not a money maker. As it turned out, beginners luck had it so that they now sound amazing. Not audiophile grade, but still nice and balanced, and much better than the original drivers and crossovers.

    Using the Kef B200 is a compromise. It’s a good driver, but the original Spendor bass/mid. is superior. The best use of the B200 is in the Tangent TM1. I have compared my BC1s with the TM1s. The bass end is better on the Tangent. The midrange and top is better on the Spendors. If you live with the Tangents for a week or so, the BC1s won’t be missed. You adjust to the Tangents balance very easily. I could live with either pair of speakers...
