    Such a great class! And straight to the point
    Here's how I did it:
    1. Speak "Wid" with a normal D sound;
    2. Now do it again with your tongue between your incisors;
    3. Do it again and quickly follow up with accumulating air pressure between the tongue and the back of the incisors. You'll feel you're halfway there;
    4. Finally, as you keep that air pressure going, pull your tongue back and let the air escape.

      Perfect! The video was good but your comment made me simply do it, felt like comprehending a complex joke hahaha, thanks a lot for sharing!
      edit: The day after and I became aware that it wasn't perfect, so I searched for more. As always I use Google for some quick pronunciation audios (and also for excellent definitions (by Oxford Languages)) and today, re-listening to the "width" pronunciation there, I approached it differently. I also find the Speech Modification video on that same topic, very helpful.
      That's how I'm doing and I think it's closer to the right pronunciation: I'm now using the "d" sound with the middle of the tongue, very much like when you're simulating a high-hat sound on beatbox, like a "ts" sound, but with the middle of the tongue, not the tip like in regular "d", to understand it try a "tsa" sound (but you will use only the "ts"). In fact, it'll be more like a pause, like explained on the Speech Modification video. Then you do the "th", but more briefly than in "with".
      edit²: Very similar to the pause before the "th" on "eighth" - that is a "t" - on "width", it is the same but with the "d"; the ending of both words sounds pratically identical.

    Hi, Thank you for the lesson. There are two ways to pronounce the word "with" which is confusing for me. The first one is /wɪð/ and the other one is /wɪθ/ (based on my Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary). I wonder which one to use. Does it have anything to do with the following word? or can I use either one? I'd appreciate it if you could help me out with it.

    • @tarlespeech
      @tarlespeech  4 роки тому +3

      Wow...you are good. Are you trying to take my job? 🤣Yes, it does have to do with the following word.
      VOICED TH in /wɪð/ comes before a voiced sound in the next word. (with me)
      VOICELESS TH in /wɪθ/ comes before a voiceless sound in the next word. (with him)
      That being said, I hear people saying the voiceless TH in /wɪθ/ more and more.

    Is it ok to pronounce "with" with an unvoiced th sound when it is alone or at the end of a sentence, and with a voiced th sound if it's followed by a vowel (with it, with you, without, within)? Or would that sound unnatural and weird?

      Think of saying S-eye to start. Then for size, end with Z by keeping air moving out of the mouth. DO NOT TOUCH the teeth.
      FOr SIDES: say S-eye to start then end by touching the tip of the tongue to the back of the top front teeth for the D then pull it away to make the Z sound by keeping the air moving out of the mouth.
