Such a great class! And straight to the point
Here's how I did it:
1. Speak "Wid" with a normal D sound;
2. Now do it again with your tongue between your incisors;
3. Do it again and quickly follow up with accumulating air pressure between the tongue and the back of the incisors. You'll feel you're halfway there;
4. Finally, as you keep that air pressure going, pull your tongue back and let the air escape.
Thanks for sharing and helping others.
Perfect! The video was good but your comment made me simply do it, felt like comprehending a complex joke hahaha, thanks a lot for sharing!
edit: The day after and I became aware that it wasn't perfect, so I searched for more. As always I use Google for some quick pronunciation audios (and also for excellent definitions (by Oxford Languages)) and today, re-listening to the "width" pronunciation there, I approached it differently. I also find the Speech Modification video on that same topic, very helpful.
That's how I'm doing and I think it's closer to the right pronunciation: I'm now using the "d" sound with the middle of the tongue, very much like when you're simulating a high-hat sound on beatbox, like a "ts" sound, but with the middle of the tongue, not the tip like in regular "d", to understand it try a "tsa" sound (but you will use only the "ts"). In fact, it'll be more like a pause, like explained on the Speech Modification video. Then you do the "th", but more briefly than in "with".
edit²: Very similar to the pause before the "th" on "eighth" - that is a "t" - on "width", it is the same but with the "d"; the ending of both words sounds pratically identical.
Thank you teacher!
I am from Brazil, and you're always helping us with these pronunciation videos.
Happy to help! 🤗
"Breadth" and "width" are a pain in the neck for me. I can't make them sound like you do, but I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the help, and it's a very helpful lesson!
Itoldyouso - English Listening Practice Channel they are a pain in the neck for sure! Hang in there-you will get it!
Very instructive, because I thought "with" and "width" were pronounced the same way. That "dth" sound makes me crazy... Thank you, Jennifer.
Yeah, this is a really tough one! The difference is very slight.

Ha! I regret that statement even though that’s what to do.
@@tarlespeech Sorry, couldn't keep myself from mentioning it :D. Like I said, great lesson, great channel ;).
My english teacher back in elementary teaches us that "With" must be pronounce as "wid", same goes to "width". thanks for this by the way.
I hear that a lot. Glad this helped!

Correct, they can sound the same since they are VERY similar but context helps.
@@tarlespeech you are a lovely 😍 🌹 teacher... thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏 ... cordially from Lebanon 🥀 🇱🇧 ❤️❤️❤️
i think it might be helpful just imagine that when you pronounce the TH sound, you just reach out your tongue, whereas you just "bite" your tongue(not really, just touch your upper teeth on your tongue), and stop the air a little bit to pronounce the D sound, and pull back your tongue to pronounce the TH.
Thanks for sharing. I know this will help others.
I love you, you are the best!!!
My company's website used the word breadth and I love words and have never heard this! You made it easy to hear the proper pronunciation quickly
You are so sweet. Thank you!
Hi, Thank you for the lesson. There are two ways to pronounce the word "with" which is confusing for me. The first one is /wɪð/ and the other one is /wɪθ/ (based on my Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary). I wonder which one to use. Does it have anything to do with the following word? or can I use either one? I'd appreciate it if you could help me out with it.
Wow...you are good. Are you trying to take my job? 🤣Yes, it does have to do with the following word.
VOICED TH in /wɪð/ comes before a voiced sound in the next word. (with me)
VOICELESS TH in /wɪθ/ comes before a voiceless sound in the next word. (with him)
That being said, I hear people saying the voiceless TH in /wɪθ/ more and more.
@@tarlespeech Thank you so much for the reply and your kind words :D I really appreciate it.
Tarle Speech & Language Services - English Pronunciation : so am I right hearing that the “width” sounds exactly like the voiced “with”? with a slightly longer /i/?
This is exactly the question i have been looking for which led me to this video. Thank you all.
❤❤❤ 3:47
That was confusing, sorry!
yoooooo i`m laughing so hard i can't bruh hahahahahahahahahahahah
Sorry it is too difficult!
Can you make a video to teach us how to pronounce EVACUATION

Jessica Frietze I'll add it to my list. It is pronounced. E-vac-you-at-shun
ty for teaching me only problem is when i talk i don't use them i'm used to just saying z instead of th
Practice words first and get really good at that. Then try sentences, then reading. You will be able to use it in conversation before you know it. Good luck!
@@tarlespeech ty will try it
Is it ok to pronounce "with" with an unvoiced th sound when it is alone or at the end of a sentence, and with a voiced th sound if it's followed by a vowel (with it, with you, without, within)? Or would that sound unnatural and weird?
You can use unvoiced when connected to a vowel. People will understand you and it would sound natural. I actually do this some of the time.
@@tarlespeech Did you mean voiced? Because I know you can use the unvoiced th for all those cases, but I was wondering if you can use the voiced th only when it is followed by a vowel, keeping it unvoiced if it is alone or at the end of a sentence, without sounding foreigner or unnatural.
It sounds exactly the same to me
They are very close! In fact, I hear native speakers saying them the same way.
👍
🤩
1:10 lol im sorry
Glad I gave you a chuckle.

Hi. Can you please make a video to differentiate the pronunciation of r (like in current) and ʒ (like in asian)? Thanks!
Sure, where are you from and what language/s do you speak?
Thanks a lot! I'm a Chinese speaking mandarin Chinese.
Thanks!
Can you explain the difference between sides and size?
Adding this to my to do list for sure!
SIZE is pronounced S-long I-Z
SIDES is pronounced S-Long I-DZ
Think of saying S-eye to start. Then for size, end with Z by keeping air moving out of the mouth. DO NOT TOUCH the teeth.
FOr SIDES: say S-eye to start then end by touching the tip of the tongue to the back of the top front teeth for the D then pull it away to make the Z sound by keeping the air moving out of the mouth.
All the best!
For the Z be sure that your voice box is vibrating.

When pronounced alone that makes things easier. The problem is pronouncing that d in normal speech.
Yes, it is always easier to pronounce sounds in words first. Keep practicing and the correct sound in sentences will get easier!
It's so hard for me difference between those words.
So are so close! You can always so How Wide instead of width.
It is really hard part for me, what is wrong with my tongue

Difficult. Hang internet there.
Omg sooo hard !🤯
Yes, this is beyond! Hang in there...as I always say you can choose a different word or describe it.
Wow, good explanation! Still hard to pronounce correctly. Breath and breadth sound pretty much same :( There’s no explicit ‘d’ right in width and breadth, right?

Thanks!
If you're a native speaker and find them difficult, imagine us here in Brazil...
I know, right!?! I suggest saying "how wide" for width. Just make your life easier and enjoy the conversation. All the best to you!
tbm mano
well in Russia people just don't want to figure it out and just pronounce it like "s" or "z" instead of right sounds. but I try, honestly, even though sometime I break my tongue😂
That’s totally fine! I’ve read articles that say the th sound is being used less and less and may go away all together. That would be great wouldn’t it? 🤣😂
at first i noticed the difference, but then, they sound the same towards the end of the video
This is a tough pair. They sound MORE different alone. In context of a sentence, due to coarticulation and word stress, they sound closer to the same.
Widths??
It is very hard with S
Yep. It is! You can always say "how wide it is"
I have a doubt about the pronunciation of "with". when "with" is spoken very fast, it has the same pronunciation as "we", doesn't it?
Sometimes, yes. It can sound like other sounds too. This video demonstrates that.

😭😭😭😭😭 I bit my tongue
OMG! 😱
my teeth is not straight, i feel it is hard for me to pronounce th....
That shouldn't matter, just try to NOT touch the top teeth, leave a space for the air to move out. It doesn't have to be a big space.
@@tarlespeech Thank you, that tip works for me!
Does the "dth" inside 'breadth' sounds the same with 'th' in 'with'? and 'th' in 'breath' sounds the same with 'th' in 'think'?
Width! this kind of words that make me hate English sometime.
You and a lot of other people 🤣😂

Correct.
I don't believe most English speakers stick to this rule . The distinction is quite minute.
