    Hi Egle, they were Vietnamese summer rolls. So, first we chopped a bunch of things to go in, including cooking shrimp. Then we took the wrappers, where were stiff, and soaked them in water to soften them. We put down the shrimp, bean sprouts, etc and rolled them up. Then you just eat, there is no frying that happens --- so they are very light and delicious!!

    Reduction and rhythm/stress make up the character of American English! Certainly more important than any individual sound.

    It's true that some of my older videos don't have subtitles. Put a comment on those specific videos that you'd like me to get to first.
    If you're not sure, press the CC button. I title the captions I've made "RE - English".
    Best, Rachel

    It's crazy, this is stuff I never even have to think about as a native English speaker. But this is so accurate, it's always there!

    Yes, the apostrophe-S can show possession, or be the contraction of IS. One is not a contraction, but a way of showing possession, the other is a contraction so can be replaced with the word 'is'.

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  11 років тому

    Yes, when the Z is followed by a word that starts with the S, many people would make that an 's' sound (example: is something). I think it's less common with the SH sound, though to end an unstressed word, I can see dropping the Z sound (like in 'is she').

    HAS doesn't actually contract, but it does reduce (H is dropped, vowel reduces to the schwa). So in 'he has seen it before', we pronounce HE HAS as [hi əz], so it won't be quite the same as HE'S [hiz] (it's two syllables).

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  12 років тому

    I wouldn't say anything there is reduced, but KEEP will be a stressed syllable and THIS an unstressed syllable. So it will sound similar to a two-syllable word with stress on the first syllable.

    I might make the S, then SH sound, but I could also see in fast speech dropping the S (since it's ending an unstressed word), and going straight into the SH.

    Thanks for this amazing lesson! I like studying contractions to improve my listening skills, but sometimes I have problems with "they're" and "there". I have to stop and thinking on the context, usually is easy but could be tricky for a non-native speaker. =)

    Rachel, I have a question about that food. I never saw like this before. They were wrapping and I guess it would be sunk into hot water or something. I got almost everything, just missed what food is that and what is that thing they were using to wrap up. Ahhh...I learned what I can say at restaurants when they ask if I need something else. So I can say "I'm all set" :-D Thank you all!!!

    Food for thought: the clitic "s" in she's and he's aren't actually voiced... They are distinguishable from the "s" in it's, but why? Complicated but interesting and worth exploring because of how confusing it can be for non-native learners.
    I like your video though! It shows real usage which is awesome and commendable!
