your future employer wants to know if you are qualified For the job in terms of education. So you need a diploma of some sorts. For getting a diploma you need to pass the minimum requirements. Thats the entire problem. we should change the other end of education. The employer. Let employers do certain tests of your knowledge instead of looking at a piece of paper.

If you were to create tests for interviews for specific jobs they'd be highly inaccurate and fail people who are fully qualified for the job they just need to learn a few new things or it can pass people who aren't even qualified at all. The "I can't wait to get out of school" thing is true for me, but not because I didn't want to learn 'cause I did. The teachers did shit like tackling me to the ground when I was in 1st grade, allowing a girl to stab me with a pencil, pulling me out of a cafeteria for belching, putting me on behavior pills behind my parents backs, among other things and I didn't do anything. I wanted to learn, especially math, but the schools hated me more little to no reason making my school life a living hell. So much so I can't remember much due to the stress and blackouts I had.
But to begin learning, the formal education needs to be completed first. This is often mistaken as learning doesn't require education. Without logic and critical thinking skills we are subject to "learning" falshoods. Education is not what to think, but how to think.

Fr there is no reason to have kids do work after school ends. Half of the homework teachers give is just either something extra that's completely useless or a straight repeat of what they did in class. It's especially stupid because kids are only learning things for CERTAIN future jobs. Science, math and even history are useless unless younwant a job about it yet kids are all still forced to learn it. I understand the need to learn to read, write and do basic equations but after 4th-6th grade everything you learn is useless to most kids.
Keep kids busy, occupied and stressed so that parents don't have to worry too much about them. Those kids become compliant employees afraid of losing their jobs & afraid of their bosses.
I don’t mind learning. I love to learn actually. It’s just the endless tests, projects, essays and quizzes that are expected of us and the grade letter that define us.
Yeah i agree , i like learning about cultures around the world and foreign languages but my favourite is meeting them people different than me or like me that grew up way different than me around the world but school really doesn't help much, with boring topics, endless tests and just the way they explain is boring and has no teacher character they just read it out of the book curriculum and be done with it .........and i really hate that i am wasting my time like that , the only reason i am studying for is to get good grades so i can go to a good college, school is just a formality i have to go through so i can do what I real want which is to be an artist and an anthropology
Funny thing, I started to actually learning things and third language AFTER I finished school. Only few years after I was done with that circus. Also started to read books - at some point a lot of books and I hated that in school.
It's almost impossible for me to do school and read for enjoyment. Instead of reading what I like I have to read hundreds of pages of stuff that I don't understand and don't need. Amd I'm not talking about English I'm in a computer graphics class and just read like a hundred pages for a quiz which turned out to all be from the slides he gave us.
I can definitely relate to this. I just started high school last month and I absolutely dread each coming day. I fell like after 4 years of this I’ll be in a depression at this rate. Especially because during summer break when I wasn’t in school I was learning and doing so many great things. Now all I have time to do after school is eat and sleep. It’s a really dispersing process but no matter what I won’t let it destroy my dreams and goals
This is also my first year of high school and I actually like it much more than middle school. Being naturally smart might help but I feel like making the best of your time there really makes it feel less dreadful. Of course I don’t like waking up early every morning, but if you’re gonna be forced to be there for 8 hours anyway you might as well try and figure out how to let it benefit you.

I went to a new school program called coastal planes charter high school we only had mandated 2 hours a day on the computer and we could go home after as long as ur 10th grade and up everyone younger had to go for 4 hours and we had events to encourage us to have fun there and are school was open from 4-9 I really loved this school and highly recommend this kind of school takes over over the years the flexibility of this school is amazing and I was honestly sad to leave it was so much fun. But sadly this school started when I was in 9th grade but I'm glad to say I was a part of it
It does feel like a chore... As much as I love to learn the school system really discourages this curiosity, and all they're doing is pressuring the students and making their lives center around grades and looking good for college.. I think I've only ever had one class that I really looked forward to, and that teacher that taught it had such pure passion and love for the subject they taught.
The only classes I like are art and music theory. The only 2 that I can pick. I would join theater but the dumbass that designed this decided that I need to give up art for theater. There's a theater club but you need to be in the theater magnet for it, Doesn't that just defeat the whole point?
Not only is school a place where people constantly shove information down your throat, only for you to regurgitate it on the next exam and then forget about it forever; it is also a place that takes away time from you to embrace the things you actually love and want to learn, thus sucking all the natural curiosity out of children.
I was always followed the rules at school like a typical good kid with a 3.8 GPA, but now that I'm out of that place it feels very uncomfortable For instance, I dont need to ask to use the restroom or raise my hand for a question, and people look at me really confused like,"yes dude you can use the restroom" We need to change the system, I feel if we did we will fix most of our problems but I also feel that they nation wants us to be stupid for we can purchase products without reason and dont ask questions to make america more rich and people more poor

I think I liked like 2 teachers out of all my years in school… I never caused much trouble apart from now and then, always tried to do my work on time but hated every moment of school. None of the lessons were enjoyable. University was even more depressing because it was just getting boatloads of work and readings to complete without zero supervision so you’re just left alone with all that stuff ..
Teachers should be the highest degree. And recieve some of the best pay to hours. If someone for example wants to be a nurgeosurgen. And your a biology teacher with 0 knowledge about how the brain actually works. Then how do you expect them to learn how it does. Same goes with any subject. And not only you need to know it but be able to explain it in just about every way possable. You don’t have to be extremely knowledgeable in every subject but should at least know a heck of a lot and have at least access to resources that has data about other subjects in a deeper depth
I couldn't agree with this more. Personally, I was always bored in school. My teachers were boring, the subject matter and how they went about teaching it was boring. Outside of sports, I absolutely hated high school. It wasn't until my 30's that I became someone that enjoyed learning. I study anything that peaks my interest and I always feel fulfilled once I have packed my brain with the knowledge I was looking for. These are things that I wanted to know. Things I learned for myself because it interested me, not because someone, somewhere thought it should be forced into my brain as part of a curriculum. I think in school, they trick you into thinking that you will learn the things you want by letting you pick some of your classes. Then they sneak a bunch of stuff onto your schedule because "If you want to go to a good College, you will need this and this and this." Etc. By the time you walk out with your list of classes, you are taking 1 credit worth of something you actually think you will like, and the rest of your year is spent learning the things they lie to you about needing to know.
Wait, you guys are picking classes? I have obligatorily almost 16 classes in high school (to be fair, it's a technical school) I, and other from my class and the whole country, doesn't like school as it is. We have to memorize stuff only for exams and loads of homework. I mean, some stuff we actually will use, but most of them? Nah. Here at Brazil, students basically never learns English and most of school time we spend in the verb "To be" and whatsoevers, maths everyone hates, simple as that. Portuguese... Is kinda the same thing for you, Americans, British, etc, teachers always want to look for meanings and interpretations of our culture, literature and a bit of the past of the world. And the rest is just the rest, we lose a little more than a third of our day at school. The cycle is this: wake up early(some around 4 and something at the morning), go to school and stay 8 hours there, memorize or just forget instantly things most will never use, go back home, do chores and when you see... You barely have any time for shower or something fun, that if you're not busy with the complex homework we get. We have weekends as normal(sometimes we have to go to school at Saturdays). To be very honest, we have some good teachers that actually teaches fun stuff to us (some which is very useful for our future). About myself, I had a genuine interest in English since I was around 8 or something, and I actually got really good at it with (almost only) videogames. I do have some easiness with classes that doesn't involve much math and/or complicated equations. For last, I do want to try more, but I don't feel the will to do so, for many reasons. In short, school doesn't work because the base is weak, teachers are underpaid/unprepared to teach in a way we feel happy WHILE learning, and that students already come to school like.. well, that bad stereotype of bad behaved kids and teenagers. Honestly, the school system need to be remade from the start, but there's a part on the social culture of some places too. I may be speaking some nonsense, but a good part of this is true.
Well if you put as much effort into watching this short then writing this comment, you probably would have payed attention and actually understand that school is meant to wire your brain with new ways of learning, critical thinking, problem solving, and other skills that you will be using the rest of your life.

I only have one optional class and there's 4 options. music theory, p.e, spanish and computer skills. That's it. You also have to take atleast 1 year of p.e in high school and 2 years of language classes. Two things can be right at once. As for me I understand that I was forced into it, but I never really complained because that's a waste of time. I understand those who do and that is valid.

I never payed attention in school, skipped all the time. Often I'd only go to school at lunch and stay for gym class, then I'd just go home. Had a blast, but I was a little sarcastic rebel; in and out of juvy, learning basically nothing. I only realised I loved learning after I left school and decided I had better educate myself, so that I didn't fall behind my peers

I’m in my senior year right now and I can confidently say it is not the teachers. It is the homework that is the problem. I have an IEP which means I get special treatment and I go to online school which helps me a lot because I only get 3-4 hours of class time before the rest of the day is decided by me, but I can’t get all my work done because I studied the work in freshmen, later after many fights and arguments with my parents I realized I was not getting credit for doing the work because their was no show of progress. So now I feel students are more encouraged to cheat on tests than ever before because the answers don’t matter, it’s the grade and how many lessons you check off that truly matter in school. School has not taught me anything more than bad habits and I feel my creativity has become more “by the book” which I’m trying to break out of. I need therapy because school kept me from seeing friends or going outside because it was never over and never done. It has ruined my life and the opportunities I had to jumpstart my life are gone. So when I hear schools prepare you for the future I call bs when I can’t start my own business or get a functional job within the timeframe of the school because homework takes priority over everything especially when you get threatened with expolsion. Don’t get me wrong the teachers are amazing and they actually help, the reason I mention my IEP and the hours of school is to say that even if a student has that and comes out like me then their is a serious problem. Just last week I felt what other depressed people felt before reaching for a gun. Yeah it sucks and I’d prefer it if our education system actually helped us specialize in a system that we want to do, it’s been proven many times that if kids specialize in one since 6 years old they become a genius- at this point I’m venting so ima stop here, their is a lot more I can say but this is enough for now. I figured out early in my young life, that school was BS. I did just enough to keep me out of academic trouble based on whatever teacher/school standards there were. I never had a desire to go to college, and I didn't. I was always more interested in the simple learning of how things worked and what other cultures were like. I always felt like travel would be one of the greatest teachers in the world, so I traveled! My life has been filled with absolute wonder. I surely didn't miss anything by NOT buying into the educational system.
As a teacher, I can tell you that it is “accountability” structures in place (aka Standardized Testing). Even in elective subjects like I teach, we are so damn concerned about getting kids to pass the damn tests so WE don’t lose our jobs that we don’t have time to focus on promoting curiosity or even allowing kids to experiment and investigate on their own.
Need to END ALL homework. Steals kids' childhood from them... and.. makes it a chore. They're kids... let them go play.. if school was contained in school, it wouldn't be as despised. Homework is the time you get to independently practice what you learned. I had homework in highschool and it helped me learn the material. I have seen schools that do not have homework and those students generally score worse on those tests.
Those defending the school system by saying education is necessary, and that it teaches us common sense, social intelligence and test how well can use what we memorize are completely missing the point here. We do not think school needs to end. We think it needs to change.

I am still in school and I can remember wanting to learn and being curious I would read my parents old text books in like 4th grade but every year I lose more and more interest in learning and every year it's more of a chore that I resent and wish I could never do again.
school teaches you common sense and to understand the world around you even though the educational system is out dated, I live in South Africa and a vast majority of people here are uneducated and they don't understand simple things in the work place like if you tilt a machine to the side when it's on a moving pallet it's gonna fall off the fking pallet and break a 100 thousand dollar piece of equipment. And because they didn't go to school they weren't educated on how physics work (like not knowing the machine will all over) or mathematics, you break my expensive piece of equipment I fire you to make up for some of the loss on your yearly salary. Or reading a map when you get lost and your phone is dead etc. Learn what you can in school don't ignore it or you will be very out matched in the real world when it comes to intelligence. The coolest dude in school might be the guy with big muscles but the coolest guy when you're out of school is the very educated guy who the previous cool guy works for at minimum wage. School feels like it goes slow and yea it does but it's well worth it once you leave school and are smarter than everyone else and go into Uni. Think of it like this, you sacrifice 12 years of learning and maybe another 3 or 6 so 18 years in total to get a really good job and make a really good salary and buy whatever you want for the next 50-60 years.
The pressure of just getting grades and being given hw that takes hours after an already 7 hr school day made it unenjoyable. Thats like doing a 50 hr work week except you dont get paid and you dont feel productive so time drags

The problem with school is homework. As someone who I consider myself to be a nerd. I find math, science, and history to be interesting. I consistently get good grades on tests which means I clearly understand the subjects I’m supposed to be learning. Which is true. Problem is, right now I have 3 Cs and a D. The reason being is that I don’t do the homework. So then that begs the question. If I’m not doing the homework but still getting good grades on tests/quizzes, then what is the homework doing? Adding stress and making it harder to graduate. Homework should be optional. For those who want to get better and for those who need practice. Maybe it should be extra credit? I, being a 15 year old freshman in high school, don’t have many solutions to offer. But that’s my best guess on why the American education system is flawed
The gen eds in college are flat out useless. It was stuff i did in middle school. I dropped out. But did almost all my graphic design corses. I actually used it many times in my small buisness reluctantly. In school you have time and no one yelling at you and breathing down your spine and saying "hurr durr, this neeeeeds to be done" Nah bruh. That's not how this works. The school system doesn't teach you real life situations, and they don't teach you 1/2 you need to know to have a chump change job. But, that's just for astronomy and physics topics😍😍✨ I literally do not like reading the other subjects like biology, english, history, civics.. 😵 Now, I am in degree clg and have to say, I don't like going to clg🥺.. I want spend more time in reading and building up my knowledge about the universe and unravel the mysteries of the universe... But, this clg timings are so harsh.. We have to be in clg from morning till evening.. And the only thing we should learn there is the subject that are there. I think it’s mostly bc of tests grades and homework and it adds stress and they make learning un enjoyable also we don’t learn topics we wanna learn about if I can have my whole class schedule around topics I’m interested in and didn’t have to deal with homework or tests or atleast graded test to be judged by a number 0-100 I think I would’ve been more happy and realized how fun learning can be, but the school system needs adjustments and ofc many more issues that I’m not stating but that’s j a few, also if this was the case I’m sure teachers would like there jobs more, ofc learning the basics is important but I mean like in hs when u basically know the basics. Also one last thing I truthfully feel that deep down it’s the curriculum not the teachers , like I said before if schools suited topics that are more interesting and important I feel teachers would like there job more, important things like road safety, insurance, taxes, I left school knowing nothing ab that, and ofc interesting topics is self explanatory
One of the BIGGEST reasons for me why I don’t learn or it’s hard to remember ANYTHING is seeing the importance of it, or the application. If you dont see that, it makes it worthless and you make yourself not want to do anything about it and see it as a chore.
Yeah I think it might need more than an adjustment. I think I needs to be destroyed and rebuilt all over again with different ideas in mind. There hasn't been a huge shift in the educational philosophy of public schools for like forever. The International Baccalaureate (of which I'm a student) has tried very hard to be this better academic program that builds people as learners and thinkers has come very close to being amazing but it falls short in a few places. I'm sure someday someone will improve upon it and then we just have to hope that public schools embrace it.
When I was in college all we did was drinking! Almost everynight we're going out lol. Luckily, some of us are responsible enough to get high grades and graduate. That's what I miss when you talk about school. I'm from the Philippines by the way.
to be honest the only thing i remember from my highschool teachers is two things: 1- selling sketchy alcohol is a way of paying for your education. (my ethics teacher told us this which make it more hilarious) 2-Ex coyotes can become very good physics teacher (my teacher used to work as coyote at some point in his life) after that all my knowledge was taught to me by a tutor while playing dead space

Ideas are abandon tests and homework. The guy who invented homework initially brought it up as a punishment. Tests are useless, and very stressful. We don’t want boring assignments and plus everyone learns differently. Some people want a cool teacher and others want a creative one. If everyone is different that doesn’t mean feeding them the same medicine is going to work.
You cannot correct a system that is, in its core, a flaw. School teaches you that every problem has exactly one solution. In all reality I’ve held a job for a total of like 3 months and I was immediately hit in the face with the truth that almost no problems have one solution, most have many, and occasionally there are problems that don’t even have a solution. The reason we take the most useless classes the system can find is always justified with “because it teaches you to think” when in all reality it builds the box you have to teach yourself how to think outside of.
ong. think about it this way, when you are about the age of a toddler you always ask your parents "what is that?" and when your parents answer you are amazed out of your mind. same thing with whenever you're trying something new, you are wondering what it might feel, taste, or smell like. humans are a curious race of mammals that want to learn everything because it is fun. But, schools took that curiosity, and made it not fun, no one wants to go to school to learn new things because they made it not fun.

The schools curriculum is the main issue teachers can be awesome but that doesn’t matter if they are forced to teach math in the most boring hard to learn slow way where the class slows down the lesson by half an hour for every lesson because of the few kids who would probably die if they closed their mouths and thats not the only problem their honer systems are terrible your saying that if i’m smart i get to learn stuff a grade above me but the people with just as much potential but bad grades because they have issues at home or something can’t? That squanders so much learning that i’m sure if they came up with a better system it would decrease the time of learning and increase the learning amount making much smarter students who have a strong grip at what they are good at and know the weaknesses they have to work on instead of everyone having been taught the same things every day all day and having the same qualities as a billion other children they aren’t the best they could’ve been but since the school decided not to work on building the potential they have to higher levels and increasing the quality they want easy cheap little toys

Even though I get really good grades, I have very poor school attendance due to my health. I know I'm screwed either way. I'd have to admit I learn way more in my free time researching stuff I actually like than I have EVER in normal school. You barely learn anything in normal school. All I've learned so far is to "write this essay in a day and it has to be at least 1500 words long." Then repeat 7 days a week. Honestly fuck the school system. Wish my parents were rich so I could stay as far away as i possibly can from the steaming hot pile of garbage that it is.
As soon as I got to college, my outlook on life complete changed bc I had time to do things outside of studying like improving my fitness and socializing. Why do kids from the age of 5-18 have to spend 8 hours of their day in one building learning info they’re probably never going to use in their life? If you cut the school day in half and reduce the impact of hw and standardized tests, students can still learn valuable skills and decide for themselves if they want to pursue college instead of basically being forced to take that path from a young age.
I grew up in a really religious community. I couldn't help but want to learn more, but not from... the education system... I felt extremely lied to and manipulated. I was a consistent reader after school.
Kids are the ones who have the truest right to talk about this (as well as life long learners like Neil here) - but because they're kids, nobody gives a fuck about them, and the principals and headmasters just get stricter and more punishing to the point where it is just well.. virtually imprisonment for 8 hours a day 5 days a week for like 18 years (3-21) minimum You don't like it? You get punished. You don't do well? You're punished (Inside the school). You don't like it and push back, whether its bs rules or bad teaching or unpleasant teachers and environment? You get told you have no right to care and to sit down and shut up. That's not a gift its a curse and a prison, let alone curriculums that are just wrong (like history, as the most blatant example)
Stress of not passing tests was in high school very high, wherefore the students were learning to pass the test and get good scores and not actually learn something enjoying.

your future employer wants to know if you are qualified For the job in terms of education. So you need a diploma of some sorts. For getting a diploma you need to pass the minimum requirements. Thats the entire problem. we should change the other end of education. The employer. Let employers do certain tests of your knowledge instead of looking at a piece of paper.
@@BrickMediaStudios that literally makes no sense, someone can still be employed as a manager for a computer manufacturers company when his previous job was a manager of a textiles manufacturing plant. If you were to create tests for interviews for specific jobs they'd be highly inaccurate and fail people who are fully qualified for the job they just need to learn a few new things or it can pass people who aren't even qualified at all. You can't refurbish the house if the foundation is falling apart.

The "I can't wait to get out of school" thing is true for me, but not because I didn't want to learn 'cause I did. The teachers did shit like tackling me to the ground when I was in 1st grade, allowing a girl to stab me with a pencil, pulling me out of a cafeteria for belching, putting me on behavior pills behind my parents backs, among other things and I didn't do anything. I wanted to learn, especially math, but the schools hated me more little to no reason making my school life a living hell. So much so I can't remember much due to the stress and blackouts I had.

Fr there is no reason to have kids do work after school ends. Half of the homework teachers give is just either something extra that's completely useless or a straight repeat of what they did in class. It's especially stupid because kids are only learning things for CERTAIN future jobs. Science, math and even history are useless unless younwant a job about it yet kids are all still forced to learn it. I understand the need to learn to read, write and do basic equations but after 4th-6th grade everything you learn is useless to most kids.

Yeah i agree , i like learning about cultures around the world and foreign languages but my favourite is meeting them people different than me or like me that grew up way different than me around the world but school really doesn't help much, with boring topics, endless tests and just the way they explain is boring and has no teacher character they just read it out of the book curriculum and be done with it .........and i really hate that i am wasting my time like that , the only reason i am studying for is to get good grades so i can go to a good college, school is just a formality i have to go through so i can do what I real want which is to be an artist and an anthropology

It's almost impossible for me to do school and read for enjoyment. Instead of reading what I like I have to read hundreds of pages of stuff that I don't understand and don't need. Amd I'm not talking about English I'm in a computer graphics class and just read like a hundred pages for a quiz which turned out to all be from the slides he gave us.
I can definitely relate to this. I just started high school last month and I absolutely dread each coming day. I fell like after 4 years of this I’ll be in a depression at this rate. Especially because during summer break when I wasn’t in school I was learning and doing so many great things. Now all I have time to do after school is eat and sleep. This is also my first year of high school and I actually like it much more than middle school. Being naturally smart might help but I feel like making the best of your time there really makes it feel less dreadful. Of course I don’t like waking up early every morning, but if you’re gonna be forced to be there for 8 hours anyway you might as well try and figure out how to let it benefit you.

I went to a new school program called coastal planes charter high school we only had mandated 2 hours a day on the computer and we could go home after as long as ur 10th grade and up everyone younger had to go for 4 hours and we had events to encourage us to have fun there and are school was open from 4-9 I really loved this school and highly recommend this kind of school takes over over the years the flexibility of this school is amazing and I was honestly sad to leave it was so much fun. But sadly this school started when I was in 9th grade but I'm glad to say I was a part of it
Oh and they won't let you fail they make you retake anything that is under a 70. So the worst average in that school is a C

It does feel like a chore... As much as I love to learn the school system really discourages this curiosity, and all they're doing is pressuring the students and making their lives center around grades and looking good for college.. I think I've only ever had one class that I really looked forward to, and that teacher that taught it had such pure passion and love for the subject they taught.
The only classes I like are art and music theory. The only 2 that I can pick. I would join theater but the dumbass that designed this decided that I need to give up art for theater. There's a theater club but you need to be in the theater magnet for it, Doesn't that just defeat the whole point?

I think I liked like 2 teachers out of all my years in school… I never caused much trouble apart from now and then, always tried to do my work on time but hated every moment of school. None of the lessons were enjoyable. University was even more depressing because it was just getting boatloads of work and readings to complete without zero supervision so you’re just left alone with all that stuff ..

Same goes with any subject. And not only you need to know it but be able to explain it in just about every way possable. You don’t have to be extremely knowledgeable in every subject but should at least know a heck of a lot and have at least access to resources that has data about other subjects in a deeper depth
I couldn't agree with this more. Personally, I was always bored in school. My teachers were boring, the subject matter and how they went about teaching it was boring. Outside of sports, I absolutely hated high school. It wasn't until my 30's that I became someone that enjoyed learning. I study anything that peaks my interest and I always feel fulfilled once I have packed my brain with the knowledge I was looking for. These are things that I wanted to know. Things I learned for myself because it interested me, not because someone, somewhere thought it should be forced into my brain as part of a curriculum.
I think in school, they trick you into thinking that you will learn the things you want by letting you pick some of your classes. Then they sneak a bunch of stuff onto your schedule because "If you want to go to a good College, you will need this and this and this." Etc. By the time you walk out with your list of classes, you are taking 1 credit worth of something you actually think you will like, and the rest of your year is spent learning the things they lie to you about needing to know.

Wait, you guys are picking classes? I have obligatorily almost 16 classes in high school (to be fair, it's a technical school) I, and other from my class and the whole country, doesn't like school as it is. We have to memorize stuff only for exams and loads of homework. I mean, some stuff we actually will use, but most of them? Nah. Here at Brazil, students basically never learns English and most of school time we spend in the verb "To be" and whatsoevers, maths everyone hates, simple as that. Portuguese... Is kinda the same thing for you, Americans, British, etc, teachers always want to look for meanings and interpretations of our culture, literature and a bit of the past of the world. And the rest is just the rest, we lose a little more than a third of our day at school. The cycle is this: wake up early(some around 4 and something at the morning), go to school and stay 8 hours there, memorize or just forget instantly things most will never use, go back home, do chores and when you see... You barely have any time for shower or something fun, that if you're not busy with the complex homework we get. We have weekends as normal(sometimes we have to go to school at Saturdays). To be very honest, we have some good teachers that actually teaches fun stuff to us (some which is very useful for our future).
About myself, I had a genuine interest in English since I was around 8 or something, and I actually got really good at it with (almost only) videogames. I do have some easiness with classes that doesn't involve much math and/or complicated equations. For last, I do want to try more, but I don't feel the will to do so, for many reasons.
In short, school doesn't work because the base is weak, teachers are underpaid/unprepared to teach in a way we feel happy WHILE learning, and that students already come to school like.. well, that bad stereotype of bad behaved kids and teenagers. Honestly, the school system need to be remade from the start, but there's a part on the social culture of some places too. I may be speaking some nonsense, but a good part of this is true.
Well if you put as much effort into watching this short then writing this comment, you probably would have payed attention and actually understand that school is meant to wire your brain with new ways of learning, critical thinking, problem solving, and other skills that you will be using the rest of your life.

I never payed attention in school, skipped all the time. Often I'd only go to school at lunch and stay for gym class, then I'd just go home. Had a blast, but I was a little sarcastic rebel; in and out of juvy, learning basically nothing.

I’m in my senior year right now and I can confidently say it is not the teachers. It is the homework that is the problem. I have an IEP which means I get special treatment and I go to online school which helps me a lot because I only get 3-4 hours of class time before the rest of the day is decided by me, but I can’t get all my work done because I studied the work in freshmen, later after many fights and arguments with my parents I realized I was not getting credit for doing the work because their was no show of progress. So now I feel students are more encouraged to cheat on tests than ever before because the answers don’t matter, it’s the grade and how many lessons you check off that truly matter in school.
School has not taught me anything more than bad habits and I feel my creativity has become more “by the book” which I’m trying to break out of. I need therapy because school kept me from seeing friends or going outside because it was never over and never done. It has ruined my life and the opportunities I had to jumpstart my life are gone. So when I hear schools prepare you for the future I call bs when I can’t start my own business or get a functional job within the timeframe of the school because homework takes priority over everything especially when you get threatened with expolsion.
Don’t get me wrong the teachers are amazing and they actually help, the reason I mention my IEP and the hours of school is to say that even if a student has that and comes out like me then their is a serious problem. Just last week I felt what other depressed people felt before reaching for a gun. Yeah it sucks and I’d prefer it if our education system actually helped us specialize in a system that we want to do, it’s been proven many times that if kids specialize in one since 6 years old they become a genius-

I figured out early in my young life, that school was BS. I did just enough to keep me out of academic trouble based on whatever teacher/school standards there were. I never had a desire to go to college, and I didn't. I was always more interested in the simple learning of how things worked and what other cultures were like. I always felt like travel would be one of the greatest teachers in the world, so I traveled! My life has been filled with absolute wonder. I surely didn't miss anything by NOT buying into the educational system.

As a teacher, I can tell you that it is “accountability” structures in place (aka Standardized Testing). Even in elective subjects like I teach, we are so damn concerned about getting kids to pass the damn tests so WE don’t lose our jobs that we don’t have time to focus on promoting curiosity or even allowing kids to experiment and investigate on their own.
Sadly school felt like it was trying to quash curiosity rather than create it.

Homework is the time you get to independently practice what you learned. I had homework in highschool and it helped me learn the material. I have seen schools that do not have homework and those students generally score worse on those tests.

I am still in school and I can remember wanting to learn and being curious I would read my parents old text books in like 4th grade but every year I lose more and more interest in learning and every year it's more of a chore that I resent and wish I could never do again.
school teaches you common sense and to understand the world around you even though the educational system is out dated, I live in South Africa and a vast majority of people here are uneducated and they don't understand simple things in the work place like if you tilt a machine to the side when it's on a moving pallet it's gonna fall off the fking pallet and break a 100 thousand dollar piece of equipment. And because they didn't go to school they weren't educated on how physics work (like not knowing the machine will all over) or mathematics, you break my expensive piece of equipment I fire you to make up for some of the loss on your yearly salary. Or reading a map when you get lost and your phone is dead etc. Learn what you can in school don't ignore it or you will be very out matched in the real world when it comes to intelligence. The coolest dude in school might be the guy with big muscles but the coolest guy when you're out of school is the very educated guy who the previous cool guy works for at minimum wage. School feels like it goes slow and yea it does but it's well worth it once you leave school and are smarter than everyone else and go into Uni. Think of it like this, you sacrifice 12 years of learning and maybe another 3 or 6 so 18 years in total to get a really good job and make a really good salary and buy whatever you want for the next 50-60 years.

The problem with school is homework. As someone who I consider myself to be a nerd. I find math, science, and history to be interesting. I consistently get good grades on tests which means I clearly understand the subjects I’m supposed to be learning. Which is true. Problem is, right now I have 3 Cs and a D. The reason being is that I don’t do the homework. So then that begs the question. If I’m not doing the homework but still getting good grades on tests/quizzes, then what is the homework doing? Adding stress and making it harder to graduate. Homework should be optional. For those who want to get better and for those who need practice. Maybe it should be extra credit? I, being a 15 year old freshman in high school, don’t have many solutions to offer. But that’s my best guess on why the American education system is flawed

I literally do not like reading the other subjects like biology, english, history, civics.. 😵
Now, I am in degree clg and have to say, I don't like going to clg🥺.. I want spend more time in reading and building up my knowledge about the universe and unravel the mysteries of the universe...
But, this clg timings are so harsh.. We have to be in clg from morning till evening.. And the only thing we should learn there is the subject that are there. During free periods, we can read topics of our interest. 🥺😔 we have to some work which teachers will say..
Yeah the school system is so boring and life is so boring there's really not much you can say I want to do that cause your so limited

I think it’s mostly bc of tests grades and homework and it adds stress and they make learning un enjoyable also we don’t learn topics we wanna learn about if I can have my whole class schedule around topics I’m interested in and didn’t have to deal with homework or tests or atleast graded test to be judged by a number 0-100 I think I would’ve been more happy and realized how fun learning can be, but the school system needs adjustments and ofc many more issues that I’m not stating but that’s j a few, also if this was the case I’m sure teachers would like there jobs more, ofc learning the basics is important but I mean like in hs when u basically know the basics. Also one last thing I truthfully feel that deep down it’s the curriculum not the teachers , like I said before if schools suited topics that are more interesting and important I feel teachers would like there job more, important things like road safety, insurance, taxes, I left school knowing nothing ab that, and ofc interesting topics is self explanatory
One of the BIGGEST reasons for me why I don’t learn or it’s hard to remember ANYTHING is seeing the importance of it, or the application. If you dont see that, it makes it worthless and you make yourself not want to do anything about it and see it as a chore.
Yeah I think it might need more than an adjustment. I think I needs to be destroyed and rebuilt all over again with different ideas in mind. There hasn't been a huge shift in the educational philosophy of public schools for like forever. The International Baccalaureate (of which I'm a student) has tried very hard to be this better academic program that builds people as learners and thinkers has come very close to being amazing but it falls short in a few places. I'm sure someday someone will improve upon it and then we just have to hope that public schools embrace it.
When I was in college all we did was drinking! Almost everynight we're going out lol. Luckily, some of us are responsible enough to get high grades and graduate. That's what I miss when you talk about school. I'm from the Philippines by the way.
to be honest the only thing i remember from my highschool teachers is two things:
1- selling sketchy alcohol is a way of paying for your education. (my ethics teacher told us this which make it more hilarious)
2-Ex coyotes can become very good physics teacher (my teacher used to work as coyote at some point in his life)
after that all my knowledge was taught to me by a tutor while playing dead space

@@azareii first is homework and job, literaly some job is u sitting in one place, it doesnt matter how fast you have done it, if you do faster youll just end up with more work, also micheal reeve once said in a podcast that he had to learn history for his engineering degree and many more things he never needed

Could it also mean that students are just happy to have a couple months off for the summer with their friends and family? Has nothing to do with the school doing a disservice. I’m sure teachers are just as happy to get time away from their jobs too. Who wouldn’t be happy to get the summer off? Lol
School has never been about learning, it is so monotonous and just to keep kids busy. Truly a waste of human beings early life. I always fantasized about if school had been interesting or useful.

Ideas are abandon tests and homework. The guy who invented homework initially brought it up as a punishment. Tests are useless, and very stressful. We don’t want boring assignments and plus everyone learns differently. Some people want a cool teacher and others want a creative one. If everyone is different that doesn’t mean feeding them the same medicine is going to work.
Well this is what happens when you base your school model on a Prussian system for creating obedient workers...

You cannot correct a system that is, in its core, a flaw. School teaches you that every problem has exactly one solution. In all reality I’ve held a job for a total of like 3 months and I was immediately hit in the face with the truth that almost no problems have one solution, most have many, and occasionally there are problems that don’t even have a solution. The reason we take the most useless classes the system can find is always justified with “because it teaches you to think” when in all reality it builds the box you have to teach yourself how to think outside of.
ong. think about it this way, when you are about the age of a toddler you always ask your parents "what is that?" and when your parents answer you are amazed out of your mind. same thing with whenever you're trying something new, you are wondering what it might feel, taste, or smell like. humans are a curious race of mammals that want to learn everything because it is fun. But, schools took that curiosity, and made it not fun, no one wants to go to school to learn new things because they made it not fun.
If people could only dedicate to learning all day without worrying about money, unfortunately modern society doesn't let this happen, we're only here to make the rich richer

The schools curriculum is the main issue teachers can be awesome but that doesn’t matter if they are forced to teach math in the most boring hard to learn slow way where the class slows down the lesson by half an hour for every lesson because of the few kids who would probably die if they closed their mouths and thats not the only problem their honer systems are terrible your saying that if i’m smart i get to learn stuff a grade above me but the people with just as much potential but bad grades because they have issues at home or something can’t? That squanders so much learning that i’m sure if they came up with a better system it would decrease the time of learning and increase the learning amount making much smarter students who have a strong grip at what they are good at and know the weaknesses they have to work on instead of everyone having been taught the same things every day all day and having the same qualities as a billion other children they aren’t the best they could’ve been but since the school decided not to work on building the potential they have to higher levels and increasing the quality they want easy cheap little toys

Even though I get really good grades, I have very poor school attendance due to my health. I know I'm screwed either way. I'd have to admit I learn way more in my free time researching stuff I actually like than I have EVER in normal school. You barely learn anything in normal school. All I've learned so far is to "write this essay in a day and it has to be at least 1500 words long." Then repeat 7 days a week. Honestly fuck the school system. Wish my parents were rich so I could stay as far away as i possibly can from the steaming hot pile of garbage that it is.

As soon as I got to college, my outlook on life complete changed bc I had time to do things outside of studying like improving my fitness and socializing. Why do kids from the age of 5-18 have to spend 8 hours of their day in one building learning info they’re probably never going to use in their life?
If you cut the school day in half and reduce the impact of hw and standardized tests, students can still learn valuable skills and decide for themselves if they want to pursue college instead of basically being forced to take that path from a young age.

I grew up in a really religious community. I couldn't help but want to learn more, but not from... the education system... I felt extremely lied to and manipulated.
I was a consistent reader after school.
People love learning. People hate school. The current system is functional, but it's not very enjoyable.
i learn myself about topics i am interested non stop, but i HATED school.
Only class I looked forward was choir, music production, video production, band, English and history
Kids are the ones who have the truest right to talk about this (as well as life long learners like Neil here) - but because they're kids, nobody gives a fuck about them, and the principals and headmasters just get stricter and more punishing to the point where it is just well.. virtually imprisonment for 8 hours a day 5 days a week for like 18 years (3-21) minimum
You don't like it? You get punished. You don't do well? You're punished (Inside the school). You don't like it and push back, whether its bs rules or bad teaching or unpleasant teachers and environment? You get told you have no right to care and to sit down and shut up.
That's not a gift its a curse and a prison, let alone curriculums that are just wrong (like history, as the most blatant example)
