Getting Back to Photography 101 Is a Reminder of What Street Photography Meant to Me at the Start

  • In Summer 2024 I repeat my 2023 'street safari' of Manchester city centre to see if I can rediscover my eye for street photography by going back to the tried-and-tested amateur photography techniques I learned many years ago. I've refined my technique so much to get a "unique" artistic viewpoint that my shots can look banal outside of the art context...so let's spend a morning just trying to make visually interesting pictures by using low and high angles, frames within frames, reflections, shallow depth-of-field, contra-jour and extremes of contrast. Could be fun?

Yes, shallow depth of field - this is what I am trying to achieve. Good stuff. Red telephone box with queue I like very much.

    Hello, Ed.
    Great video, friend.
This is the way I want to use to take pictures now.
    I love the mundane everywhere.
I have been taking pictures for almost 40 years now and always went for the "most beautiful and special" that could be found.
I forgot one thing, enjoying this wonderful hobby.
What you show here is something I like.
I have been working with it for a while now and I like it very much.
I work with a G9II but with a 25 mm lens on it, it is not that big and easy to work with.
When you watch videos of all those beautiful places on our planet and you see that someone is taking pictures there I always thought I wanted that too.
But there are already too many of them and I am disabled so my travel range is about 30 km with my mobility scooter.
I will definitely follow you friend and see what else I can learn from you.
    I really like this video.
    Kind regards from the Netherlands,
    Antoine.

      Thanks Antoine,
That's a lovely message. I really appreciate it.
I find working with smaller cameras and lenses is SO much easier nowadays...I don't know how I managed to carry around two full frame dSLRs and a bag of massive lenses and flashes when I was an event photographer back in the Noughties...no wonder my back hurts!
There are definitely good things to photograph close to home if we look for them. Travel is great, but there's plenty within a 30km range of me! I'm not sure how I'd fare in the Netherlands though...I love the hills and mountains!
Best wishes and have fun with the photography.
      Ed 🙂

Hey Ed. I loved this. Very inspiring. I might even dust off my camera and get back out there.

Thanks Chris, appreciate you taking the time to search out the channel and watch! It was nice to bump into you at the "Secret" Street Party the other day, and I hope we cross paths again soon! Have a great week 🙂

This was very inspiring. I have been struggling with my street photography. So, back to basics and rising from there.👍

Always a good tip to start off a photo walk with some low hanging fruit.
