Not so fun fact: Soldiers often modified their weapons and ammunition to be deadlier than the normal ones. My great grandfather was in the Austro-Hungarian army and often told me about the battles and the time between, he had also made a notebook listing all the different modifications they tested and surprisingly gas ammunition that caused burns inside the body of the person that was hit was commonly used. Bone fragments were often used as a filler like incendiary ammunition nowadays to cause even more internal bleeding and if the soldier would get medical treatment, it was ensured that the doctor was occupied for as long as possible with all those small bone fragments inside of a soldier. There was also some kind of ammunition that was filled with rotten flesh soaked in gas that would transfer deadly bacteria and gas inside a hit person. The wound would normally swell dark red and begin to turn yellow. Then the flesh would die too and cause more and more pain. Edit: Those were not the deadliest and cruelest inventions the soldiers had made. In some skirmishes, the soldiers would try to infiltrate the enemy ammunition supply and either blow it up or exchange some of the ammunition with the same type but modified to blow up when fired. The ammunition was marked so that it could later be identified if not every bullet was used. Poison was also put with the medical equipment. Food was most of the time taken away but when the soldiers did not have enough space to carry the food, they would poor gas over it. It was hoped that the enemy soldiers would eat that food and die. This was only used when the AH-army section in which they were operating had enough to eat. After that, they would not capture any food for 2-3 weeks. In some instances, the soldiers cleared one section of the trench network (guards) and then poured gas into the quarters of the enemy soldiers while blockading the entrance. The trenches where my great granddad fought were not really like the ones you probably think of but more like one day construction trenches with small tight rooms in the trench for the soldiers to be safe if there was an artillery barrage coming their way. Another thing was when the soldiers took prisoners and slit them open on the arms and the torso (not too deep) and then poured gas over them and then they sent them to the enemy side saying if they would survive, they would be free. This meant that badly wounded soldiers were sent in small groups back to their side where they would hurt anyone who touched them in a gas stained area. It was hoped that the enemy medical section would be taken out because they did not have been shot but just sliced open a little bit. The gas soaked uniform was hoped to be thought that it was blood and that the pain would not make the field doctors think that it was gas.
