It means that Slavic folk is brutal and Bulgarian choirs in particular have some insane technique. Folk in the rest of Europe is rich and beautiful (Europe would do well to remember it), but this is on another level.
Crazy heard the pop version a couple of years ago and was curious if what I was hearing was an actual language. Then someone recommended another Bulgarian song that I loved and decided to search more Bulgarian songs. Came across this recording which confirms that the lyrics of the pop song version of this are indeed a real language and of course very beautiful.
Can someone explain the history and meaning of the song? I read it's about a girl name Petrunko who's dancing wild and waiting for her lover to dance with her and the reason why they sing the part "ay" or "yup" and stop abruptly or quickly is because they didn't want to get caught by their capturers. Is this true?
ok i know nothin about all that but the original folk song is about the girl (Petrunko) and her friends who are looking for a dance. they find one, shes leading the dance, and a dude who is baddddd at dancing joins the line in the front instead of the middle (which is the customary thing to do) and he like knocks the flowers from her hair and gets mud on her shoes and so forth. We did a version of this song in a different language than bulgarian in my church performance group and thats how the story went when translated. This version is very choral, like theyre adding embellishments for the sake of making it an interesting piece, but there is always the little "yips" to some extent because that is a common "adlib" to many balkan folk songs. sorry i hope i didn't make ruin the fun but i still think its a pretty relatable story haha
