I TOTALLY (!) love to hear and talk American English. In Italian, my language, we use to melodize (and often enphatize) our speech the same way you do, to give a specific emotional meaning to the sentence apart from words. We also tend to prefer the vocal flow, using lots of contractions and elisions. I think it's quite an outstanding similarity. Thank you for these wonderful lessions!

You where working and use the word brilliant, In my opinion that is really the most use catch work for UK English speakers to use for ie-good,great, awesome and sometimes negative twist. ie- darn, shoot, damn, when the unexpected happens. I would try to use that word less or use something else, That is if your try"n to pull off a great American speech norm's. (see how laze I wrote things,) try'n ,,norm's

@eaglesgogirl Geordie is very hard to understand! I agree. My best friend (from 10 years ago) married a man from Scotland (and they moved there)-the wedding was Scotish. I couldn't understand a bloody word from half of their friends who flew in, I felt embarassed! Then I thought, yep, they must have fun with this too knowing they can say all sorts of things to we Americans and we can't figure it out. I'm sure they had a ball with us in our confusion. I'm still a sucker for accents!

@eaglesgogirl I think (bracing myself) the valley girl American would sort of be "viewed" like the Geordie accent, re: representation. I live in New England and have while I may speak abruptly compared to the southern drawl, I have no discernable accent that one might expect from Boston, Southie or otherwise,...not Maine, or NH. If anything I may sound like I'm from CT. But I am "sans accent" per American standards (just my lack of drawl or lack of uptalk revealing where I'm NOT from).

@eaglesgogirl As an American, yep, I totally understand. And you're right. I do believe most of us classify "British accent" to somehow almost always mean posh, and very few understand just how diverse the language is. Out of curiosity, what would you consider (if you HAD to try and make a similarity that is), but what would you or others maybe consider the equivalent version of what would be an "American posh" accent? I can pick up "poshness" pretty much everywhere except Wales, but just me

@eaglesgogirl I think CT is the closest Americans have to "posh" - especially if one attended private boarding school (which I did -- but I lost that accent after graduation,...but I definitely picked it up and retained it). I find the variety of British accents to be far more exciting and interesting and entertaining. Many American accents irritate me.
