  • #UltimaOnline #Turok #CrashBandicoot2
In this episode of The Electric Playground we kick things off with Kelly Benson’s question: “Who Is Lord British?” and then EP visits Origin Systems in Austin, Texas where Victor Lucas catches up with Lord British himself, and the creator of the Ultima series, Richard Garriott. Victor also chats with Ultima Online director, Starr Long, Paul Sage from the Q.A. department and Chris Yates, the chief technical officer, about this incredibly complex and groundbreaking online experience.
Then Tommy Tallarico takes EP to the European Computer Trade Show in London and we learn about the making of FIFA 98 with producer, Marc Aubanel (incorrectly labelled as Nick Malaperiman-sorry Nick and Marc!), as well as soccer star, David Ginola. Then Tommy chats with the founder and president of Interplay, Brian Fargo. Then Tommy gets into all kinds of trouble at the show-check out the rad Psygnosis Wipeout XL motion pod!
After the break EP heads to Iguana Entertainment where Victor chats with Darren Stubbington about the formation of the studio, the sale to Acclaim and the development of NFL Quarterback Club for the NIntendo 64. Victor also speaks with Dave Dienstbier, the project manager of Turok for the N64 and Darren breaks down how the tech for the dinosaur shooter helped them make a state of the art football game in 1997 for Nintendo’s console. Then Kelly sits down the rock band, Skunk Anansie and talks to them about Lara Croft and their take on video games.
When The Electric Playground returns from break it’s back to the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically to a houseboat in Sausalito, home of Illusions Gaming, makers of Necessary Evil (unfortunately never released). Tommy chats with creative director, Darren Bartlett, while Victor has a conversation with James Coliz, the technical director for the game.
For the Question of the Week, David Perry from Shiny Entertainment answers “Why are European developers producing such great games”
In Reviews on the Run we look at:
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back for the PlayStation
Croc; Legend of the Gobbos for the PlayStation
Mischief Makers for the Nintendo 64

I remember watching this episode live back in '97. I was fresh outta high school living my best life just hanging at the mall and knee deep in some Sega Saturn and N64. Had my friends over all the time after work for split screen Goldeneye deathmatches but that was later in the year. I was so hyped for Turok and bought it day one in March that year. I remember thinking the graphics were amazing! A beautiful time in my life ❤

Goldeneye and Turok were literally the 1st FPS games I played. They walked so Halo and COD could run.

@@MizzahTee speaking of Saturn, there's been recent developments in a flashcart solution for loading games from a SD card. It's called the Saroo. It's just a Ram cart that acts as a 1mb-4mb ram expansion, individuals saves, and lets you load up games with about 90% compatibility. Shits only $60.

OH wow... I totally forgot about Shaw! I now have to go on the google.
Update: Ha, my home town. They're rebranded/merged as early as 2023 with Rogers.

Seeing EP cover a British game show ALL the way back in S1, makes me a bit sad that EP never made British and Irish airwaves, but thankfully, you can online (as I discovered when I lived there between 2010-2014, on the website at the time).

Ultima online was a special place in it's early days. Loved seeing that throwback. I spend so much time of my formative years in that game. It was truly special and one of a kind

Tommy is so basic. Always comes down to graphics with him. Also 8.5 for Croc did not age well 😂

@@betweenthewheel So true. The one thing I remember about this show is Tommy constantly hating on Nintendo. And yeah Croc. I own it on Sega Saturn. Not terrible just overwhelmingly ok. Not special

What an amazing, cheerful time, industry just starting to really grow. Competitive, but not terribly-so. Great episode. Turns out spatial awareness is also great for video games. ;)

15:25 Illusions Gaming made 2 Beavis and Butthead games and [a/the] Duckman game (not sure if more than one exists). They also made a few other games. None of the 6 games had particularly good reviews.
The game discussed here -Necessary Evil- was cancelled and never launched. I'm guessing the fact that their games weren't getting particularly good reviews (or ultimately sales) probably played a major role in that.
