  • Did you know there's a way to start a fire by squishing air? In this project we're building a tool that does exactly that, and with a little bit of resourcefulness, we can make this for under $1.00. This tool is completely see through, so you can witness the ignition first hand!

    Project History & More Info:
    A fire piston, or a "slam rod fire starter" as I sometimes call it, is a device used centuries ago to kindle fire. It works because rapid compression heats the air in the chamber to the ignition point of tinders, such as char cloth. The tinder can then be used to ignite kindling, and develop a flame.
    It's thought that the fire piston may have inspired Rudolf Diesel in his creation of the diesel engine around 1892.
    I had a fire piston I made out of copper tubing, but I wanted to make one out of clear acrylic so I could actually see the ignition of the tinder. It seemed it mystery how, or when, it actually lit, and I wanted to see.
    FINDING ACRYLIC: I used google.com to find different plastics companies in my area, and called around until I found one that sold acrylic tubing and rods to the public. I went for a visit, and luckily they had some lengths of scrap tubing they couldn't sell. I asked them if I could use it for a science project, and they gave it to me for free.
    The tubing I used was 1/2" inside diameter, and the rod was 1/2" outside diameter - clear acrylic.
    This piston was given to a subscriber, as part of a contest I held in celebration of 10,000 subscribers on my UA-cam channel.
    See more information on the fire piston on Wikipedia; en.wikipedia.or...

    All for under $1!!! I just used this spare sack of diamonds I had lying around my house, the shift knob off of my Bugatti Veron, 5oz of vampire blood that the vampire blood store gave to me for free, and these 5 baby seals I found and clubbed. You may need a 5000 MW laser, a back hoe, and a CNC machine to finish this job. But you could improvise and use the laser from say the Death Star, and I guess a bulldozer would suffice.

    This is simliar to how a diesel engine works. The pistons compress the diesel-air mixture in a cylinder until the compression causes the air to heat up and ignite the diesel.
    Something like this would be great in a survival kit, because lighters don't always work when wet (or if they break), and matches are useless after getting wet. Plus this is reusable until the tinder claw melts completely which should be long after many lighters are used up

    • @StormwaterIsOneWord
      @StormwaterIsOneWord 10 років тому +1

      That's exactly why he referenced the diesel engine and added it to his survival kit. Unlike him I don't have these exact materials readily available so I cannot build this exact one. But the concept nevertheless still applies, compression and heat. Should be a fun build.

    • @Pete856
      @Pete856 9 років тому +1

      Not to be too nit picky, but I must correct you on how a diesel engine works. The piston only compresses air, not fuel, as there is a danger of it burning too early and causing engine damage. The fuel is injected into the top of the cylinder at high pressure once the piston has reached the right point. The hot compressed air causes the fine spray of fuel to burn.

    • @fryncyaryorvjink2140
      @fryncyaryorvjink2140 9 років тому

      thanks for clearing that up, I had been wondering how they keep the fuel from burning until top dead center, or just after. Seems any inconsistency in the production process would lead to slightly different flash points

    • @garryhuxley

      Timothy Ryan Fisher I read somewhere that the first attempt of combustion under compression was a metal block with charcoal in it and a piston used to compress the coals, on hitting the piston with a hammer the coal exploded and blew the guys hand apart, the inspiration for the diesel engine.Fact or fiction ?????

  • @paulandrulis4672
    @paulandrulis4672 9 років тому

    +Grant Thompson, the fire-piston technique also works with other char material as well. Anything that will work with a flint/steel will also work with it. If a small hole is drilled into the end instead of a claw, a small chunk of charcoal, char-cloth, fine fibrous materials (two hits), plant char, etc, can all be used.
    This is a great design on many levels. First, if the material is slightly damp and therefore is not reaching ignition temp, you can see it through the clear tube. Second, the material is superior to many others as it is an insulator concerning heat. Metal conducts heat too well and the char ignites at a lower temp, especially with good heat conductors such as aluminum, copper, and brass. The higher temps achieved with this unit make it even more reliable for ignition, though the acrylic material will wear faster from the heat generated in the claw area.
    I would recommend this build for those interested in wilderness survival.
    Good job, Grant.

    I think this is how diesel fuel is ignited in a diesel engine; with compression and not by a spark-plug.

    • @awsomesauce03
      @awsomesauce03 9 років тому

      Where would the force come from to compress it

    • @LOOTS243
      @LOOTS243 9 років тому

      awesomesauce An electric motor could be used to start the engine? Then every thing will start to run by itself once ignition has occurred, obviously. You can not ignite liquid diesel with a lighter for example. Have you tried to Google it? ;)

    • @fl4shbangz
      @fl4shbangz 9 років тому

      awesomesauce When you turn the key on your car, an electric spark ignites the fuel for the first time. From there, the power of the explosion makes the pistons go up and then down again with enough force to cause another explosion. And it keeps going on like that :)

    • @LOOTS243
      @LOOTS243 9 років тому +1

      JonnyKiller Yes that is true to all conventional gasoline engines, but not diesel engines I think (the "electric spark plug - line"). :) Diesel engines uses a glow plug to heat the air for a small time around itself before it can start clean (and sometimes even start up older diesel engines), then when the air around is hot enough to ignite atomized diesel, the diesel gets sprayed (which also, as said, atomizes the diesel fuel, which is needed to make it mix good enough with the air around) into the chamber and the diesel fuel ignites; then the four stroke cycle begins and the air gets compressed and heats up enough from that compression; after the start help from the glow plug, and then the cycle continues like that without any necessary help from the glow plug. I think this is how a typical diesel engine works, without having researched everything about diesel engines ...

    The principle is so well known, so such a device should have shown up long before now. Very cool, well hot actually.
    Tip for drilling plastic is to increase hole size in steps, use a low.drill speed, and most importantly use a lubricant. Mineral oil is perfect, but most anything will work in a pinch as long as it doesnt contain solvents. It washes up nicely afterward with soap and warm water. I saw the evidence of overheating during drilling at least one of the holes where the chips coming out looked soft. As soon as you smell plastic its already too warm. Let it cool down before continuing.
