First video I see of him now, and this is the first comment I see after watching the video. Sad to see :(
I've never posted a video in the afternoon in my life! But I have so many I want to post so I'm just going to get them all out. This is getting really fun!
i think you should do it more often
Good video hope to see more
YESSS!!!
Wow
Hey King
I never met Grant, but look at how many people he's helped with these videos to get off of couches and gaming chairs and actually do something worthwhile. I knew how to make large batches of charcoal with clay mounds, but not small batches for little projects. This video popped up in my feed when it first was published and I've been using it to make 3lb batches of black powder with each paint bucket full, all thanks to Grant. I haven't bought any black powder in several years thanks to this - only substitutes for when I don't want to shoot anything corrosive through a hard to clean gun like a lever action. I've taken game and done French and Indian War reenactments and gotten Native American and non Native kids interested in their history with the black powder made with this charcoal method coupled with my trusty musket. Thanks, Grant. I know that you're enjoying this next adventure.
"OH no my charcoal caught on fire", doubt that's ever been said as a negative thing.
Yup
lol.
working at a factory that produces charcoal, and the stock pile catches fire. is one example.

I love the real world applications. Great experiment on the saw dust.
Thank you!

+Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" could you make a tutorial on how to melt metallic stuff with charcoal?
finally you made that project that i was waiting for cuz when i saw how to make the solar scorcher i was like when is he gonna use the saw dust
Me too
"In this video, I'll be showing you how to make TNT from drain cleaner, cold packs, and paint thinner, all of which are readily available from home depot."
cool
radical
I could make a bomb out of a roll of toilet paper and a stick of TNT
That's easy. You can make nitric acid out of the drain cleaner and cold packs, and paint thinner is toluene, which can be nitrated.
Making the acid is easy. Separating it from the other crap isn't.
Anybody want to bet that an up coming video is going to involve some sulfur and potassium nitrate.
Johnny J it took only 10 months later your post!

@@jayson4125 No not gas, gunpowder.
This man kindled in me the spirit if do-it-yourself. Rest in peace you are missed and loved by all
PRO TIP : try keeping all the sticks as close to the same size as possible , this helps keep the charing prosses of the bulk materiul more consistent thus higher quality charcoal
you should run the cans through the fire empty to burn out the liner. that way you won't have contaminated charcoal.
Glad I can come back to this, started making charcoal today
This is one of the most fascinating videos you've made. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with charcoal!

Hey Grant, u should do stuff like hobo stoves or can (penny) stoves etc. I LOVE THAT STUFF!!!
I've made so much charcoal doing this technique thank you!
Such a nostalgic moment when I saw this video in my recommendations. Still very fascinating, you are one of the best youtubers that I subscribed to, never lacking any interesting contents. Be cool there buddy, rest in peace. Thank you for making these videos part of my life, much appreciated :')
During WWII the federal govt distributed literature which described how to convert gasoline powered engines to burn that wood gas through the process of gassificiation.
Was basically a 55 gallon drum with a vent that went to your carburetor you filled with wood and biomass, and put that inside of a bonfire. Was designed so farmers could still farm with tractors if there was a shortage of fuel. Could also run low horsepower vehicles, even some pickup trucks of the day.
Is there a video of this? I would like to see a scale model run off of this wood gas. I can imagine alot of explosions happening if I attempted this idea.
Just search "gasifier honda".
theres a video a guy did running his whole farm off wood gas, also, MrTeslonian here on youtube has setup a ghetto outdoor wood gas distiller, and there was also a channel named victory gasworks run by a guy who made gasifiers for people and demoed them on youtube but has since stopped giving info out and started a commercial operation based on his designs, they have a website but no more informative videos :(... interesting stuff, they say 17 lbs of dried wood is equal to the power in 1 gallon of gasoline
MeTeslonian's woodgas converter is pretty sweet. I watched his videos first and then found this channel somehow.
Jesus, hes lost in the wilderness and he's STILL making videos
haha XD
Lmao
He needs to pay the cannibals if he doesn't want to get eaten.

What's your point ? are you trying to be funny?
This was so cool. I would LOVE to see/learn the 100 uses for the charcoal!!!!
I would like to see a real in depth video on stuff to make with kids. Me and my 7y old son follow you and trying out the easyer stuff and we love it! Thanks from Sweden!
try using your solar scorcher on dry ice and liquid nitrogen
yesssss
They're white/transparent so, unfortunately, presumably nothing impressive would happen.
Not a very bad idea
+elementiro so paper won't do anything? Glass won't do anything against it? Highly doubt that
Clear glass - I don't think so. Well, it would maybe break after some time because of teperature difference. And it won't be instant effect. If liquid nitrogen would heat, it would just boil a little more intensive, but created mist would disperse the light more effectively. The other thing is that liquid nitrogen and dry ice would only boil/evaporate heated, producing some mist, so - nothing very impressive. (however, if you would close them in container and then heat it would "explode" because of pressure). Anyway, hey, I said "presumably". I didn't say it's bad idea to try. I would be very happy to see that I'm wrong. =D
Team up with the hydraulic press channel and compress it to diamonds!
: )
It's charcoal not coal.
Coal is made out of carbon which diamonds are aswell made up of. Diamonds are super compressed heated carbon.
And a hydraulic press wouldn't be able to do it, you'd require several million tons.
lol
+Jamaal Jones yyour right but charcoal and coal have different properties the only similarities is that is can be use a fuel for burning and its black :p
wait a minute is that a metal gear 5 reference? :o
I saw this video and decided to make charcoal on a bigger scale. I got a big can and I used a bunch of wood I had from collecting firewood. I cut it up into smaller charcoal sized pieces and "cooked" it. I now have beautiful charcoal for the next time I cook. This video was awesome. Thanks. I appreciate it. I go through so much charcoal because I grill a lot. This video saved me hundreds of dollars. Easily.
I've seen it done with other plants too; they shrink more but look super cool. Berries, celery, even tomatoes.
I really like the new layout of the videos! They seem more laid back and fun for you :)
I hope to see you make some black powder! I´ve done it myself and I found out that charcoal made out of soft wood (such as balsa) will result with a better black powder. Maby you can try different types of wood and compare them ;-)
+Yoshi Hara Thanks!
good idea
lol I doubt he will show kids how to make flash powder! plus it's not as easy as mixing charcoal with baking soda and shaking it up for 3 seconds .
Not flash, black powder. HUGE DIFFERENCE.
+Cosmos do u think either is easy to make are even responsible to show young viewers how to make something so dangerous
I watched this on your website but I had to come here to say thanks for this awesome idea making charcole, very cool indeed!
Thanks Ive been looking for an effective way to make charcoal and you have provided in.

thank you so much. this video saved me man !! i got a project that need this
That is so cool , thank you!

this video really helps me a lot.. so inspiring. thank you.
Miss you dude. Just putting this out there for those why use various methods of producing charcoal. Its very well done roasted wood. So can use as described here or digging a hole, building a fire, and covering it again..... Its roasting. These videos were awesome. Will never be the same.
How about a wood gasifier that you can use to power one of your other projects?
Make a video showing tons of things you could use the charcoal for
Great video
You can also use cloth and string to create something called char-cloth which we mountain people like to use when camping/hunting. It's amazingly flammable, even compared to its non-chared counterparts, and really handy to start a fire with.
P Mason I've never tried Vaseline but just plain cotton balls will light and burn very quickly.
He made a video about Char cloth a few years ago.
thats because vaseline is actually Petroleum Vaseline
Excellent, those of us in the muzzleloading business use the same method to make char cloth for catching a spark when using flint and steel..
I found a Stone with iron in it can you show us how i can "melt it out" ;D would be nice i cant find a video for this on youtube
I used tissue paper and wrapped it with alumininium foil to make charcoal when we had a barbecue. 10/10 best smoke thing that lasts for like 5 mins
Great vid. Cant wait to see what you will use the charcoal for!
I love the new format
The music was really distracting. Also for some reason you sound like you're in a studio not outside... usually the audio quality and production in your videos is top-notch but on this one it's weird.

Grant, no worries! We still loved this video!
And then the 'primitive technology' dude comes along and does it with 2 sticks, mud and a bum leg.
haha ikr
Yep
Way cooler too.
Yeah, but no one would actually use that method other than for educational purposes. This method is faster. Need more, you just scale up the container. Seen people do this with 55 gallon barrels.
primitive technology is way smarter than hin1
I made some before I saw the vid with lions golden syrup tins and some kindling
you can put more than one vent in them. sponges or wet rage also work to block vent, or simply turning the can on a flat floor
I tried it like this it worked amazingly
Grant, were you inspired by the recent How It's Made video showing the process for coconut charcoal?
Whats the difference between this and just normally burning wood? Is it that the wood in the can doesn't catch fire? If so what does that do for the wood?
Cool! I'm gonna have to try to make this to power my forge!
thanks grant, that is a really good way to make charcoal, when i make black powder, i usually just get a piece of charcoal and sand it to get powdered charcoal ;)
is it possible to make a small instant ice wall?

Atleast charcole is important
did...did you just reply to yourself...?
one of my favorite videos is the pump you made from PVC pipe. it reminded me of boy scout camp out cause I was the water filter guy but it was a pain. can you show how to make a water filter with that charcoal? it would be great paired with the pump video for survival or emergencies.
Awesome video. Went out to the wilderness, little paint cans. Excellent. I'll have to do this too, as I'm in the city and there is a burn law for my city. Other cities I see have no permits needed.

I think it would be great if you continued the theme of outdoor/ DIY survival, and made a project video using that charcoal to make a water and/or air purifier.
I would like to see how you make gunpowder out of the charcoal. Thanks for the great videos!

I'd like to know if you could power your furnace to melt metal with the gas made from h20
the hho generator didn't actually put out too many BTUs which means it would take a lot of hho to make a sizeable smelt. If you made a smaller smelt however, it would be amazing
You could, probably, if you use an electrolytic seperator with water, you get highly flamable hydrogen gas and oxygen gas as well. Oxygen allows combustion, so if you can collect the gasses and control the output rate, you could certainly burn the gas, and with the right hydrogen to oxygen ratio, you could probably power a mini foundry.
h2o? so you mean like... Steam? I'd be quite shocked if you could
JubioGaming I think that the person who wrote the comment means the hydrogen and oxygen that you get from electrolytically (spelling?) separating water, as opposed to boiling the water into vapor.
thank you
hey Grant. I'm a really big fan of your videos and I've learned much from you. can I use paper to make carbon? will it still work the same?
this one was pretty helpful , i love this than the other liquid nitrogen , slime , and the other science things
Grant you should make a video on how to make a water filter using your home made charcoal to clean the water and I just thought its a helpful thing that everyone should know and plus in you don't wanna drink polluted water cuz it can lead to severe sickness or even DEATH
Water purifier using the charcoal please!!
FINALLY! Something with practical applications. Now show me different things to do with the charcoal!
AWESOMEE!!! It would be interesting to find a way that can get us from there all the way up to the carbon fiber.
You should try making black powder
Need something flammable like charcoal? To make it, you must have something flammable.
everyone has a deo or perfume......gathersome wood and dry leaves start a fire with a match and use perfume or deo to burn all thing
If you're running low on fuel, then BY ALL MEANS do Not use this then...
I love love you very much please keep doing what you're doing!!!
I love love you very much please keep commenting.
Hey Grant Thompson ! it would be really cool if you make a portabale, handy but an amazing FLAME THROWER.
could you please make an emergency water filter for when you're stranded on a beach for example
Try your hand at making some compressed briquettes!
I think it'd be kool if you made another video on how to grind it down and form decent briquettes out of the charcoal powder
It looks delicious for some reason...

I love your channel and I have done most of your projects. You have a great channel and everything, I would like to see something more with rockets. Your rocket series was great. I was hoping you could build/make some other rockets(possibly more aerodynamically better or bigger) and/or make a new rocket fuel (possibly something that gives off more thrust and making a rocket go higher). Something else that'd be cool to see is more wilderness survival/emergency "hacks" that'd help with maybe camping or going on a long expedition. (Something kinda like maybe using old tic tac containers as holders for spices or something along those lines). Basically survival "life hacks".
Thanks for taking your time to read this and put it into your consideration if you like the ideas.

Emin Gani see ya.
Making it Activated charcoal is the hard part.
Yeah, any idea how to do that at home?
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random"
I really wish I did, when I researched it a few months ago I learned there are 2 basic methods to activate it, high heat steam or using acid + very high heat then washing it to remove the acid. But the temperatures involved are close to 2k Deg F for steam and even higher for the acid method, I know we have melted glass bottles in a super hot campfire before which is about a 3000F melting point, so it can be done but that fire took hours to make and was a stay 5 feet back or your clothes started smoking fire :)
"activated charcoal" is just charcoal with a very high surface area to volume ratio.
oobligah
Yeah the name really is deceiving, should be called highly porous charcoal or something descriptive.
95TurboSol In theory, very fine sawdust that's turned into charcoal would be pretty decent.
