Per tutti gli amanti della tecnica, vi allego il link del trattato di tecnica di canto Melocchi/Del Monaco fatto interamente da me. È' la tecnica completa con tutto quello che nessun maestro vi potrebbe dire e spiegare per il semplice fatto che non sanno nemmeno loro di cosa parlano. Il trattato e' in forma scritta senza esempi video perché questi tendono a creare una brutta cosa ovvero l'imitazione. I was 17 years old and saw Dorothy Kirsten sing Butterfly in Los Angeles at the Greek Theater. I sat about 10 rows from the orchestra and was so transported to another world by her acting singing . Del Monaco is a god.
I am a life-long fan of Corelli, but no honest person can deny that MDM’s voice is one of the wonders of the operatic world!!!

La regia che tiene conto delle annotazioni dell'autore sono quelle che amo di più. Le stravaganze di alcuni registi deformano l'intera opera. Mi piace la prestazione dolce di M. Del Monaco a conferma che era un tenore completo.

I saw him in Otello a number of years ago! I was surprise when I heard him sing mezzo voce I didn't think he could! His acting and singing was outstanding! After that performance I was never ever able to hear another Otello that I enjoyed!
I envy you getting to see such a wonderful and legendary tenor.

Del Monaco, handsome enough to be a film star,. is in superb voice here, showing off his expressive mezza da voce -3:34...- that some claim he didn't have, singing with grand romantic passion and intimate caresses as well. Kirsten, a truly beautiful woman under that unfortunate make-up had a flawless technique and large, warm voice which is so much in evidence in this extremely well-acted performance.
Wrong Mario... Nothing against Del Monaco but why didn't he take the High C ??? This was 1957 he was still in his Prime , maybe he wasn't feeling well enough that night but after listening to Mario Lanza and Katheryn Grayson sing this duet it wasn't even close.
Etnalleb Mario del Monaco had twice the color and force as Lanza, but his high c wasn’t there. Caruso nor gigli had much of a c either, does the lack of a single note really undo it for you? Lol Mario’s a natural is huge and glorious, why ruin the entire integrity of a gorgeous scene for a single note? Comparing Lanza to del Monaco is serious clowning 🤪

Del Monaco e' stato un fenomeno vocale , una voce di uno smalto virile inconfondibile , di un timbro affascinante che si faceva perdonare anche certi suoi eccessi interpretativi.Chi lo ha udito in scena non puo' dimenticarlo .

Two real "pros" showing their "wares" here, they probably knew the piece so well they could sing it in their sleep. Dear old Puccini at his romantic and clever best. God, he was so skillful. All they had to do was sing it.

Qué pena que shows como el de Ed Sullivan ya no hay más. Siempre tuvo grandes artista y fétido tipo de música. Debería revisarse profundamente los archivos de ese show. His voice was remarkably expressive even when Del Monaco sang at full throttle. It is amazing how much emotion he could generate and with what feeling! He was also, an intelligent singer; he wisely opted not to go up to the high C although clearly, he was poised for that moment. A wonderful excerpt of this marvelous duet. Bravo to both Del Monaco and Kisten.
This was him at his best. MDM was a "Bb" dramatic tenor. He had a glorious Bb, could sort of get a short B sometimes, and wouldn't sing a C outside of a recording studio. His whole voice was just placed a tone lower than your typical high C tenor.

@@raphaelhudson Del Monaco had the High C but used it very sparingly , he probably had the Best Bb of any dramatic Tenor with the exception of Franco Bonisolli who sand High C's like popping M and M's . Bonisolli never got the credit he deserved but he was every bit as good as MDM.
Listen to the other Mario, that is Lanza and Kate Grayson sing this duet and it puts MDM and Kirsten in a much lower class. Oh Course Lanza didn't have to sing the whole Opera like MDM but there was no reason for MDM not to take the HighC , he was still in his prime in 1957. I was really disappointed in this duet , even Kirsten seemed to hold back.
@@Etnalleb Hello! My comment is directed at those people who criticize Del Monaco excessively for his stentorian style. He was capable of singing with feeling and emotion as this duet clearly demonstrates. Del Monaco certainly could have sung the high C; it was certainly in his range. There might have been reasonable cause for not going to the note, but that is a moot point. As regards Lanza, his reputation in the world of opera was based on his potential. He was not an operatic singer. He was a tenor with wonderful equipment who also sang operatic arias among other genres that may have been more suited for him. It is highly problematic to rank someone on the basis of his potential. As you noted, he did not have to sing the entire role. Kathryn Grayson has long been a favorite of mine. She, too, had plenty of potentials to make an operatic career but did not. Lastly, we all have our preferred versions of operatic selections with justifications aplenty. Let us simply enjoy the marvelous rendition of these wonderfully gifted artists.

guido greco oltretutto non è facile cantare con giacca e cravatta. Ti senti stretto il collo e qualcosa che ti spinge sotto il mento. Già qui si nota la sua grande padronanza scenica e tecnica.

Del Monaco one and unique, very rich full, masculine, and sensitivity, plus BALLS; but then Kirsten a great American soprano that over the many year of great career kept her voice the same, always young and fres, a great Artist. WHERE ARE TODAYS SINGERS ????. nobody sing from the heart anymore. Young singers have received so much information about the voice instrument work, with this and that muscle, that became sound machines, PLEASE use what we have now in the smart way, youtube offer the oportunity to listen to great singers from the past, and learn, learn, -do not copy them, but learn their phrasing, look how they approach high notes with oval mouth and the sound are round and coperto, LEARN.

Contrary to common opinion, Opera is not a singing exhibition but a theatrical representation of a drama. A drama that instead of being spoken is sung. What counts in it is not doing the High C, but expressing effectively the story being presented. Del Monaco is a dramatic tenor, an intelligent tenor that understands that, when on the stage, he must give 100% of himself, both as a singer and as an actor, in every moment of the performance. He never rest or save his voice and his strength to latter on make it to the High C (as the great majority of the tenors are doing). He is not there for an isolated exhibition, he is there to create the drama and completely engage the spectator in it.

What? Mario Del Monaco surclasses in voice and power everyone in 60ies, his voice could be heard outside every theatre he sung that night.. Soprano had shaken legs and their body tremble all night long. In an open air like Arena di Verona his voice could be heard even without microphones.

It must have been quite a challenge for his partners in duet not to be overwhelmed and simply worried about their ears .
You know, it's a fact that Del Monaco, unlike Corelli would never cancel a performance. I recall giving a baritone who sang a lot at the Met(living outside of Camden ,NJ at the time and needing a lift to a vocal competition) telling me that, early on in his career in Italy he and a friend had heard about the size of Del Monaco's voice and 's went to see him perform. He said that Del Monaco sounded like he must have had two pieces of steel for vocal chords.

I heard Mario live, @ the Met, in the mid 50's, singing the whole 1st act of Butterfly with DeLosAngeles,
in a gala performance, & was stunned by the enormous power of his top notes, which one could also feel, but was unimpressed by the excessively spread quality of his middle register, & a concluding broadside of sound that completely obliterated Victoria's high C. I left the house later reckoning that criticism of such a unique instrument was small minded, & missed its wonder.

Live?! You're kidding. This clip is so obviously dubbed, which is fine as it allows the singers to move more naturally.
the clip is a live because it was sung live on the Ed Sullivan Show. The original audio was less beautiful. I had to separate it from the video to clean it and then reinserted it trying to make it recumbent. For a few thousandths of a second it goes out. When Mario of the monk sang live, he shrugged his shoulders to breathe. In playback No. keeps them still.
Not dubbed. Discerning people can tell this is live. When he dubs it looks totally false
