- Just Music. Renata Tebaldi & Carlo Bergonzi sing the famous duet 'Vogliatemi Bene' from 'Madama Butterfly' by Puccini with the Orchestra e coro dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia of Rome in this Decca recording from 1958.
This is the very recording I first heard of this heart-breaking aria as a kid listening to my mother's records . It remains my favorite.
Unbelievably good, we are so fortunate these days to be able to listen to incredible singers like these and many others, words fail to describe how marvelous they were.
You are so right Mike, I deplore some of the so called advances of modern life, but thank the Lord for decent sound systems.
Carlo Begonzi was a great tenor. Never got the accolades he deserved. UA-cam has provided the platform that allows us to compare most of these great recordings. Over time , I came to appreciate what a great tenor Bergonzi was.
bergonzi was sublime
SUBLIME YES.....HE HAD THE PERFECT BALANCE IN HIS VOICE WHICH MADE HIM THE GREATEST VERDI TENOR EVER......AND UP THERE WITH ANYONE ELSE YOU CARE TO MENTION.
@@luigicorvi1661 " Perfect Balance "
Madama Butterfly - Act II: Io so che alle pene · Carlo Bergonzi, Enzo Sordello, Fiorenza Cossotto , Tullio Serafin Conductor.
Maybe the most beautiful 1.57 minutes of music in Bel Canto opera. The Perfect Balance of Carlo Bergonzi is in part why this trio is so incredibly beautiful.
Carlo, in my opinion was the best. He never overpowered his sopranos and they always segued together seamlessly
Paul vesely absolutely agree with you, the greatest
There have been many excellent recordings of butterfly, konya and lorengar, bjoerling de los Angelo's bergonzi and scotto but this with tebaldi is in my humble opinion the greatest ever recorded
Tebaldi and Bergonze in magical duet.
Greatest recording ever never be equaled
I think this is definitely the best version.
Tebaldi / Bergonzi , the best duo you can imagine .
Great performers .
So moving. So beautiful. Definitive.
Such aching beauty .. such perfection. Today .....
Wonderful
Maybe the best ever for this particular number.
So artistic and beautiful
Powerful as well...
Better than any other couples.
As moving as Di Stefano/ de los Angeles or Björling/de los Angeles. Bergonzi does a great job, and Tebaldi is just out of this world.
Tebaldi stirs my heart!
BEAUTIFUL ! ! ! Thank you for posting !
Speechless. I am awestruck at such perfection.
The best!!!

The greatest recording of this, loveliest of Puccini's duets, ever made...........Just an opinion....
Alan Gregory I would say in the top 3. I also love The Final Scene of La Rondine and O Soave Fanciulla from La Boheme.
Alan Gregory AGREE..... A VERY ITALIAN WORK COMPOSED BY AN ITALIAN, AND SUNG BY VERY ITALIAN VOICES, VERY ITALIAN SINGERS, SO........ IT IS A VERY DELICIOUS ITALIAN PERFORMANCE WE CAN ENJOY VERY DEEPLY LIKE THE "........PROFUNDO MARE, CIEL...."
I agree.....
Truly amazing, as to who’s best, what difference...its opinion, even when based on knowledge..... people just enjoy ...please
it is very difficult to find fault here with two outstanding exponents of opera .sublime in its purity
Bergonzi . Always sympatico con diva, never overpowered them like a lot if tenors
Gorgeous duet, thank you Renata and Carlo.
There are no words... RIP Carlo Bergonzi....
Alan Gregory I whole heartedly agree this duet had never been bettered one of the most beautiful voiced sopranos to ever grace the operatic stage coupled with the sublime smooth voiced excellently schooled tenor bergonzi a master class in singing
I just love Freni and Pavarotti singing this duet too, but I must admit this Tebaldi/Bergonzi performance is the definitive version. Tears to the eyes stuff!
Douglas Pickerill try the 1952 with tebaldi and campora a beautiful tenor voice I have the opera on CD campora was very underrated
Thanks David Clarke for the recommendation - you're right! I've just played the1951 recording of Tebaldi and Campora and this too is also a gloriously tear-pricking musical experience. Thank God these recordings via UA-cam are always available to be discovered and loved! Thanks again.
Maravillosa Tebaldi !!
Renata Tebaldi, grandiosa interpretando a Cio Cio San
to me personally this is the penultimate version .. no other will do or come close to it for me
Pure magic!
The very best recording of this opera. Tebaldi & Bergonzi are both on top form. We will never hear singing of this quality again.
Absolutely correct there aren't and have not been singers this good in the last 40 plus years, something is very wrong somewhere
Another wonderful pairing from the Golden age of opera recording. Bergonzi much recorded and somewhat under rated these days, and shouldn't be. Tebaldi great ad always
Never ceases to amaze me how posts allways mean fights even with opera. Well I prefer Tabaldi, but what the hell do I know i'm an 18 year old American High School dropout.
Well you know a HELL OF A LOT!
now you,re 34 and you,re right
My Heart
Try Fritz wunderlich and pilar lorengar and bjoerling and De Los angeles also very good but hard to beat the warmth that comes from Italian voices
Best version of this duet on record. The voices compliment each other. Two wonderful singers at the peak of their powers. Only Italians can sing Puccini as it should be sang. Like it or not that is the truth.
Peter Gammond : Why am I a prick? For giving an opinion? Then everyone who comments on utube is a prick. What do you mean by prick anyway?
Totally agree with you. Italians for Italian Opera.
@@DimitrisLian agree some people cant understand the style and warmth of italian singers in most cases suits italian composed opera better as would a russian singing russian opera its not rocket science
Yes yes yes
Sorry
Simplemente maravilloso.¡¡¡
And Bergonzi didn't sound a whole lot different 40 years later.
this is so moving and in the end he totally ignores her after giving her a child . the swine
mike clarke please watch the opera first .he loves her
YES he loves here very dearly .. BUT in the end he marries another woman and ignores her completely when he returns
Personally I find more balance and beauty in De Los Angeles and Bjorling version.
Typical yank
This duo were perfection. Tebaldi has a beautiful range but was never sharp. Bergonzi voice, soft and sensual not dominating a piece that after all was about the Madame!
Never sharp but sometimes flat lol. Nevertheless, she still remains one of my favorites!
Carlos never oversang his divas, the best.
THE-BEST!
This and the Bjoerling/de lasAngeles are my favorites
Well I would prefer Tibaldi/Bjoerling or Callas/Bjoerling..just for the dynamic beauty of their voices In the end, it"s a matter of one's personal taste. There are many great duos for this particular piece.
I am a fan of Bjoerling . A fantastic tenor . When paired with Tebaldi is didn't work well . Her voice was too big . Both were great artists but Tebaldi and Bergonzi were the epitome of this wonderful duet. Giuseppe Di Stefano and Renata Tebaldi recorded this duet in San Francisco. Very special.
Always room for an opinion. In my opinion , Renata's voice was too big for Bjoerling. Not a good coupling . Jussi Björling was a wonderful tenor. I really liked him . His voice had a special quality.
Well said! I agree, Bjorling is pure vocal masculine perfection in LA Boheme and Madam Butterfly.
@poeta per sempre
Lord of Busetto
Let me just remind the uneducated detractors of the fabulous Bergonzi, below, that this opera is called "Madama Butterfly" and not "Monsignor Pinkerton!!!"..Hence his voice is... and should always be....secondary to hers...Pinkerton after...... all is a 24 carat woos!!!!...as Puccini intended......too strong a male voice here would completely alter the dynamic of the drama...Del Monaco as Pinkerton?........I don't think so!!!
Yes and no - I have heard Renata Tebaldi in a failed paired with
Jussi Bjorling in a production of La Boheme. Bjorling is a great
tenor but Tebaldi's voice was just too big for him. By contrast , I find Carlo Bergonzi is a perfect fit. When required by the score , he is more than adequate . I did not get an overwhelming sense that his voice was subservient to hers.
Del monaco debut successfully as pinkerton i 1940 there is a video on here with him and Kirsten singing the love duet two large voiced singers but its still pretty good, and it really is unfair to scoff at del monaco as he was a true dramatic tenor not a lyric, i remember bergonzi having to leave the stage in aida as his voice gave out,so you are not really being fair, del monaco sang many roles bergonzi could not and vice versa
Tebaldi l'angelo .
Callas il diavolo.A ognuna la sua
Antonio Stracquadanio
extraterrestial
Callas 13.400.000 hits su Google, Tebaldi 1.940.000.
A ognuna i suoi.
IT'S THE USUAL........EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF CALLAS....SHE IS POLITICALLY CORRECT.......THE ENGLISH ESPECIALLY LIKE HER
BECAUSE SHE PUT HERSELF ENTIRELY INTO THE HANDS OF THE ....OPERA DIRECTORS.....WHO ARE NOW THE BIG STARS.......NO ONE GOES TO OPERA TO HEAR SINGERS...........AND IF THEY WERE NOT AMPLIFIED.....YOU WOULDN'T HEAR ANYTHING.
MARIA SUNG EVERTHING....BUT EVEN SHE REALISED IT WAS KILLING HER....HENCE HER FAMOUS RIFT WITH BING...WHEN SHE COMPLAINED IN THE PRESS THAT HER VOICE WAS NOT AN ELEVATOR.........BUT SHE CREATED THE MONSTER....AND IT CONSUMED THAT VOICE....AS EARLY AS 1957.....IT HAD DETERIORATED SND SHE WAS IN SERIOUS DIFFICULTY........TEBALDI ALSO SUFFERED IN THE LATE 50'S......FOR DIFFERENT MORE PERSONAL REASONS...AS SHE WAS MORE CAREFUL WITH HER VOICE.....SO MUCH SO THAT AT THE VERY LAST CONCERT IN THE USA IN 1976...SHE SINGS 24 SONGS AND ARIAS.....AND HER VOICE SOUNDS SIMPLY STUNNING. TEBALDI BECAUSE OF HER MOTHER'S DEATH AND A BAD RELATIONSHIP SHE ENDURED WITH A CONDUCTOR..HAD TO REST FOR 10 MONTHS IN 1963 BECAUSE OF EXHAUSTION .......SHE DID REGAIN HER CAREER AND SANG SOLIDLY FOR ANOTHER 13 YEARS......ABOUT 50 PERFORMANCES A YEAR....THIS WAS A VOICE THAT SUNG THOUSANDS OF PERFORMANCES TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS.....!
@@luigicorvi1661 Please, Luigi, answer in your language - I don't understand what you mean. Thanks.
@@luigicorvi1661 this Englishman loves Tebaldi, she moves me like no other singer, cant listen to her without tears of joy
