Love ur content... I practise ur 3 fills everyday on drums very useful 🙏
I think that having the same setup really blocks the creativity .....and changing the order of patterns is the most one that iam excited about
I want to try adding, I need a bigger crash, only have one. And I took out the 14" tom. The most helpfull it's to write down your practice.
I find that doing 8th notes for 2 bars then 4th note triplets for 2 bars and then 16th notes for another 2 and the: get that fast alternating then do double handed
0:37 This is actually one of the things I love the most about having an electronic kit - you can change the sound to almost anything.
Exactly! You have so many options which helps in creativity.
Yeah but in my opinion an electric kit isn’t as fun as an acoustic (of course not everybody can play an acoustic, maybe because of neighbors or stuff like that...)
I just realised how many of these things I’ve been doing for years. I went from being a pure metal head to a Jazz drummer.
So cool!
Why not both? *sweats in prog*
wow
I didn't even realize i was listening to the same drummers until you mentioned it. Thank you my dude!
My pleasure!
But... Delta Empire is so cool ;)
@@ffwrude Dont know who that is.. lol
How did you know the problem I was running into!? 😂 Thanks so much man!
🔮 Happy to help!
xd
Was on my kit while scrolling through UA-cam and got the notification! Was so happy it was from your channel!!!
Heck yes!
Not looking through UA-cam videos while practicing is a good way to be creative as well ;)
yup
I liked this video before even starting it lol
You are a true modern hero.
That's what I do
xd
Same😂
I always do that.
I love that you don't just start with "just play something different" like a lot of these creativity videos do, but actually gives people advice to change their sound to "slap" them out of their current comfort zone, that's actually a super valuable piece of advice.
I appreciate that!
I'm doing your five weeks to faster hand and I'm already up to 130 beats a minute. I've only been playing for 3 years and 95% of my practice and ability to play has came from your UA-cam channel. Thanks for all the great videos.
Heck yes!! That's amazing!
Being creative is something that I feel everyone needs, whether that'd be just a new beat, rhythm, tone, or accent. Creativity definitely makes for being more motivated to play and be more diverse. Awesome work!
I couldn't agree more!
@@DrumBeatsOnline Thank you man!
Gabe not only are you a BadAss drummer, you have the gift of gab and the personality to go with it! I always come away from watching your videos like “hey that was cool, or he is right about that”. Speaking of drummers that I’m obsessed with -> (Mike Portnoy / Ray Luzier/ Neil the “Professor” Peart (R.I.P.) / Todd Sucherman / and last but not least, the one that I’ve literally been hooked on now for like the past 15 yrs “Gavin Harrison”! Not that I can even fathom to play like any of those greats, but they’re the ones that I idolized the most! Thanks for keeping me inspired and keep safe . . . 🥁
Thanks so much Steven! And yes, those are all killer drummers!!
Bro you are the best drummer that I ever seen i don't have words for you I love your style everything you play and keep going bro
You are very kind🙏🏽🙏🏽
7:22 my fav drummer is Gabe Helguera
Yes Gabe! had a problem with creativity for ages and put this in your survey recently, stoked to see a video come out on this topic!
Heck yes Joe! Thanks for participating!
Just started playing in a band again after a five year hiatus. I have added a cowbell a China and an effects cymbal and it’s been great fun incorporating into drum beats
7:17 You are my favorite drummer!!🤘🤘
❤️❤️
Playing drums to pop or hip hop is a huge help! I like to try to come up with rock/metal drums for pop songs and after a little bit, I’m playing things that I never really thought I would. There’s a freedom to playing to songs that have very simple drums.
Totally agree!
100% agree with #1! Messing with a tuning is an awesome way to get new beats flowing out of you. I noticed this when I would use different kits in my electronic kit, then when I switched to my acoustic it I was playing the same stuff over and over so I changed up the tuning and my grooves instantly changed
That’s awesome!!
Gabe another great lesson. I will go on the wait list for DBO. I would like to mention something that I have gravitated to out of being where I am on the drums. I started playing left handed. But in 1969 I shattered my left wrist playing flag football. This developed into carpel tunnel and I could not play for years. Had the wrist operated on and it was not until 2004 until I could start playing again. I vowed I would switch to playing right handed which I did. This was very difficult at first but did it. I now play both right and left handed. My point for creativity is practicing first right handed the left on the same groove or fill improved all around creativity I have found. I think just trying to play with your non-dominant side for five minutes begins the mental process. On the other hand I could just be nuts! Just teasing.
Thanks Gabe , I am a drummer who was stiffening from this problem, it helped me a lot, keep making good video 🥰
I’m waiting for it! Absolutely Nice video!
Awesome lesson Gabe! Great ideas to change things up in your practice routine! Love them new Pearls of yours!!
Great video thank you.. Inspiration is more than half of the battle.. Listening is key and variety is essential.. peace
NOT only a creativity boost this keeps the drums interesting and exciting. I tend to get bored of instruments pretty quick because I can't find anything new but these tips are excellent.
Great list!
Playing to a click track alone is big for me in being more creative. Also changing up my kit helps huge as well. Great advice here
DBO helped me a lot with learning and trying new and creative patterns!
That's amazing! Keep up the great work my friend!
these tips actually blew my mind because although i focus on one thing to learn or practice, whenever i try to be creative it isn’t as easy. Thanks!
So glad you liked them!!
The video really helped me!! Thank you
Hey man, love your content so helpful and cool, just wondering what earpieces do you use
Thank you gabe for this video , I have been playing the same grooves / licks for the last 2 months
You are very welcome! hope this helps!
Thank you for all the great tips. Great video. When or where can I get your signature drum sticks? Would love to get me a pair.
That video was realy good and helpful. Thanks.
I've been using your videos to improve and this one inspired and helped me alot. Best drum channel on UA-cam!
Always look forward to your videos especially as we are still in lockdown and this is definitely something I need to work on. Also with DBO membership would love if there was an option to pay in £'s instead of $ especially as I live in the UK.
That's awesome, I'm so glad I can help during this difficult time!
Great suggestion! I'll take a look at that.
Helped a lot thx
My pleasure!
Hey Gabe I just joined the wait list and I'm excited to get in it and I'm excited where will I go as I am playing for 6yrs now and grt video man❤️
Heck yes! Welcome to the waitlist and stay tuned for some special updates! Doors may be opening sooner than you think!
Hey gabe nice video you have really inspired me with drums!!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear that!
@@DrumBeatsOnline yeah man never stop your vids you have helped me with mental health as well brother
#1 is definitely true, I’ve been using the same kit on my electric drumset and had never explored other kits solely because it sounds great, until I got bored and didn’t know what to play so I decided to change kits and I immediately got inspired and motivated to play genres I had never played.
Hey Gabe! Awesome video my man. Me and many are so grateful your videos and teaching. I just wondered if there were any possibilities of instrumentals for I Prevail songs. Any would be amazing. I think it’d be cool cos I’d fancy learning some. If not, absolutely no worries man. Stay safe! 🤘🤘👍👍
The one exact video I was looking for! Its a must a watch for anyone out there
I used to play in a drum-line, so a lot of my fills and stuff are based with rudiments. I've been trying to break out of that, and I have also started playing to genres of music I am not used to such as Metal and Reggae. Man, I can't wait to get back to playing live... I miss playing in-front of people so much. 😥
I hear you my friend!
I play in a drum line something that got out of that problem was using the kick more during fills since that doesn’t show up in marching band stuff a lot
Such great content!
Thanks so much!
Just found this channel, what a video, I can apply most of these. Big up to the DBO community!!
Very good video!
What Camera you utilize?
Barely caught the voice crack text at 3:30 :) Very cool upload! I am blessed to have a drum room with 5 kits setup. I have each one set up differently and it really helps me stay creative with my fills etc.
Holy smokes! That’s a ton of kits dude! That sounds like a blast
@@DrumBeatsOnline It is....I'm up to about 15 kits total, lol. I just switch them out to play them
Jesus Christ, and here I am stuck with a barely working electronic set, wish I could mess around on your sets! Must have taken years to collect all of them
@@Thatdudewiththedogs Yes, it has taken alot of buying, flipping, trading etc to get the gear I currently have :) I just enjoy doing drum projects and taking drum sets that aren't in the greatest shape and redoing them.
I just really want to say what a great job you’re doing man and the level of content you consistently put out is seriously top notch. You do SO much behind the scenes that people won’t notice even down to your thumbnails which I can tell take a while to make just from the perspective overlays on the letters and your body. Your zoom transitions, lighting, and audio are all incredible and you truly inspire channels like mine to push the envelope as drummers into the filmmaking world. Gabe, you’re the man and don’t stop bro! 👊🏻
Dude, this is like my favorite comment ever! Thank you very much for noticing! I've been trying to take everything to the next level and it hasn't been easy! Again, thank you for noticing!
I love your channel Gabe! I just want to say Thank You for being the best drummer and teacher on the whole world. You, your family and friends stay safe :-)
Thank you so much for the very kind words Jonathan!
Waiting for your next video you are awesome gabe
Bro! All so true but I m even more impressed by your effort in the creative footage!!!
I think that to often drummers wont go back to just kick snare and hi hats to see how far they can go with just that
Nice tips. This really helped my creativity go to the next level.
Love that!
I changed my name if anyone was wondering, not that I think anyone cares.
Trying to imitate other drummers by setting up your kit like theirs!!! That was my mistake years ago. Ugh, I picked up so many bad habits from that. Thanks for the vids!
You are the man Gabe, thanks for helpful info.
This was great! Thank you so much! But would you, or anyone, have any drummers recommended for listening to? Since I do tend to play/ listen to the same ones
Beautiful drumset man!
Thank you very much!!
I've been stuck on the exact same thing for like a year.....its called sucking at drums. Yer really pushin the DBO and if I wasn't so scared of commitment (just ask one of my 7 wives haha) DBO is in my top two. If I ever pull the trigger you'll know kiddo. I appreciate what you do. Thank you.
These new toms look amazing man! One of the best I've seen! Love the vids man
So glad you like it!
Man you Video quality is dammmn Good!
From a basement to a studio! ♥️
❤️❤️
Thanks Gabe for telling what I should do this month.👍👍👍
My pleasure!
Thanks Gabe, now I know how to be more creative, playing the same beat is so frustrating. 😁
Heck yeah, you've got this! 🤘🏽
Which metronome app do you use in all of your videos?
Hey Gabe, I've been following for about two years now, before DBO Academy started, and I enjoy pretty much all of your videos, whether is crazy beat lesson, a sick fill to impress my friends, watching you play 100,000 notes, or just following your journey with I Prevail (I just realized that's a long sentence, thank god for commas).
I've been thinking about joining DBOA for a while, however, I'm not sure what to expect. My main concern is paying for a service that I will not use, or will only use a few times. I guess my concern is the very structure that you provide. I want to get better, but as a hobby in my mid 30s, I don't have the time to enroll and follow through with the course.
Why is it that you only take students during certain time frames? Do you keep a cohort of sorts? What if I fall behind?
Hey Damian! First of all, thanks so much for sticking around, I'm so glad to hear you have been enjoying the videos!
These are great questions about DBO Academy! Here's the deal, while yes you are provided your own specific path in DBOA, you can take it at whatever pace you'd like! There's no "falling behind". You can plug away at your lessons as fast or slow as you want to and they will always be there waiting for you. The reason I only open it up to new students a few times a year is because I really want to focus my time on the exclusive things I get to do with my members (live streams, community forums, creating new courses, improving the website, ect.) If I'm constantly trying to promote it and get new members, it takes time away from my existing members.
I hope that makes sense! But I'd encourage you to try it out, even just for a month! You can cancel anytime if it's not what you hoped it would be.
Thanks for the great question Damian!
@@DrumBeatsOnline Awesome answer! Thank you for taking the time to read and reply. I will seriously look into it. #staytrue
Very good tip bro.......what's the price of your kit????
I'm also liked the video before it start playing lol. For me this probably is most useful drum lesson ever, thank you Gabe :)
So happy to hear that it was helpful for you!
Can we take a moment to recognize how cool that B-roll film is?? Like wow 🔥
Maaaaaannn the new drumset sounds sooo good!!! Congrats Gabe!
Thank you very much!!
Nice drums
Yessss Gabe! Love it!!
❤️❤️
I liked before i watched again, because you helped me with my drumming career and im really grateful for that ! Thanks 😊
🙏🏽❤️
What about playing any blues shuffle on drums? The same sound? the same pattern?
Do you have a warm up routine before going on stage? Great video as always!
Yes actually, it's a series of stretches and pad work.
I go over the full routine in a course called "The Gigging Drummer Success Guide" found in DBO Academy!
May I ask what is the model of your in ear monitor?
You are really big man, thank u for inspiring me
My pleasure! ❤️
First video with the new kit lets gooooo!!!!!
Great video btw...lol Stay Healthy!!
Glasses are fire
Heck yes!!
7:19 “listening to your favorite drummers blocks your creativity”...... dude, you are my favorite drummer ❤️😔
Haha you I don’t mean to stop listening to your favorite drummers, but maybe add in some new ones!
Jesus Christ, your set sounds incredible. Congrats on the new set!!!
Thanks so much!!
Ok :40 into this and I had to stop.... I had to see the Toms again. Elaborate please. Very cool
0:29 how you flex with new shells "oopsie"
Hey man What software do you use to edit your videos? Plus what size are your I prevail Drumsticks and where can I get a pair? :)
I use Final Cut Pro X. My sticks are 16.5" in length and I'm working on getting them out very soon!
Also you should check out some black gospel stuff or something-helped me a ton with playing with better feel
What's the jelly on top of the snare......
When will DBO be open again? Not sure I can afford it but I really want to join
Very soon for everyone who joins the waitlist!
@@DrumBeatsOnline awesome!
Your #1 reason is why I love my Roland TD25kV. Every time I swap a kit it leads to different patterns.
I hear that!
Seriously? This video got some thumbs down? Man... those people who did it doesn't have creativity! Hah! Or PERHAPS doesn't even know creativity means. Well, All gave some, some give all; not everyones apple.
Thanks for sharing bro! This boosted my ideas of creating more unique of my very own style.
So glad it helped you!
@@DrumBeatsOnline yeah I mean yeah dude it hyped me up... 🥁🥁🥁 awesome.
Is it alright if I get a sub from you bro? Would love to see that. 👌
Nice hair style and specs
Very sound advice. Reminds of the saying, "If you're going to do what you've always done, you're going to get what you've always gotten."
For sure!!
The wrap on the new set is nice.
How do you get such deep floor toms?
i love your vids :)
Hey if you get picked for the DBO academy is it a class you can take year round or does it eventually end?
It’s a membership that continually adds new lessons as long as you stay a member!
@@DrumBeatsOnline Oooooo sounds good🤙🏼
Well my Problem why i don't want to Play anymore is because I Take drum lesssons but i'm playing The Same Thing for over 2 years now (idk what The Name of the Style is in English, im from Germany)
And yeah I want to Play some more Metal things but my teacher is like nah we can do this in a few years but not now, i need to learn other Things. But i learned with you and i can Play some metal things
Thorben J It’s always good to have strong foundations and good basic technique but it’s also important to expand try to play other styles to widen your horizons. Best of luck my man and stay safe 🤘🤘👍
@@patbateman8116 Thanks Mate, stay Safe too🤘🤘
Yep Aric Improta... for anyone who doesn't know him, really worth to check out
Shout out to playing with Jax Anderson at 4:00 🤘🤘
Those were some great times!
so helpfull
Hey Gabe...Can we Have a Video about..How dis you Start Your journey
AND THINGS ABOUT UA-cam VIDEO PRODUCTION
PLSS
I did a video on my drumming journey! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/qMiUUbHHkvQ/v-deo.html
@@DrumBeatsOnline cool
Try to immitate melodies from Songs behind the kit and take this musical approach into your playing!
Get's you off that never ending Pattern thing.
Love that!
I love Darren king too
If possible, add an octapad for an entirely new kit, but minimal space. Makes a huge dif in bands that play the same styles each week...especially for church drummers.
I haven’t listened to my favorite drummer in months now, I don’t know why but I just know how he plays and I don’t have to hear it everyday, I more like to hear how I’m playing and how close I’m to other drummers that inspired me before the new one...
