That is what I was thinking, too. We also have to remember that the Australian Open back then were not really considered a Grand Slam event for several reasons: 1. It was played at the end of the season in late November/early December when many top players wanted to take a break after a long tough season and therefore would not go for the long journey to Australia. 2. the facility at Kooyong was really outdated and grass courts were not nearly as good as at Wimbledon (many "funny" bounces). Also, McEnroe in particular wanted to get away from the game for a certain time, which he would do shortly after his loss the next round against Zivojinovic.
