    I remember so many of those incredibly angled vollies. They were either so cutting that they whizzed by many feet from the opponent as if the court had been turned around horizontally or they dropped over the net like the ball had been deflated.
    Best touch in tennis ever.

    I just wanted to say thank you for uploading this video. It had to be some work to collect all of these, and the quality is EXCELLENT. Theres matches on UA-cam from the early to mid 90s, that you cant even see the ball. These are ALL crisp.
    What a joy to watch. Thank you!

    I got to watch him playing on Grass Courts at Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport RI in Davis Cup and on the Senior Circuit. His half volley drop shots were absolutely perfect when you saw it happen in person. He also constantly changed the pace, spin and direction of his shots. From a strategy and shot making perspective he played chess while his opponents played checkers.

    To me, McEnroe was a genius. I use that word because of the unbelievable raw talent that he possessed. Other players work and work and try and try and perfect their game over decades. McEnroe was just born great.

      You only say that because you've never seen him practise. I didn't like him but saw him at practise a couple of times. Talent is never the only key to success, but always the one excuse to explain why we didn't make it.

    Ahhhhh....Johnny Mac. The best hands in the history of tennis. Bar none. And until Roger came along - he was easily the most creative player with his shot invention and selection. It's one thing to be a creative shotmaker and not be a winner (See: a whole slew of players like Monfils) but to be a creative genius and a multiple Slam winner? Those guys are rarer than hen's teeth. I can only think of 2 - McEnroe and Federer. They see the game in a totally different way than everyone else.

    • @chocolatetownforever7537
      @chocolatetownforever7537 9 місяців тому

      A lot of his shots were using wood, too, which anyone whos played with, knows how small the heads were, and also how unforgiving they were.
      You had to have SO MUCH better hand eye back then. Players today are faster, and hit the ball harder, but they are playing with SUCH better equipment than John did for a lot of his career.
      I always said that nobody was hurt more by racquet changes than Mac. Yes, he won with steel and graphite, but passing him enough to beat him with wood was almiost impossible. Had racquets stayed wood, he may have doubled his grand slam total.

      It was mutual. If you want to see them talk about it - check out a couple videos that Mats Wilander recorded at the 2019 US Open for IIRC Eurosport. It's Wilander, Becker, McEnroe and Lendl. For anyone who knows the history of animosity between Lendl and McEnroe it's hilarious to see them getting along and chatting up a storm. They're both talkers. And believe it or not Lendl is far more bombastic than McEnroe.

Vilas, Borg, Jimbo, Wilander, Big Mc, Lendl, Nastase, Laver, Becker, Agassi, Sampras...Most of thrm were hippies, poetries, rockers...Living the night and life with most beatiful women around...They've created the business. Now, boried tennis players, with ZERO fun and boried lifes, married with ugly ladies (as Nole, Rafa or Roger wives) with diets full of proteins, hormonas, anabolics and doping, are delivering a poor tennis style. Sad.
