Thanks for video. Just got back today A big box of coins I sent in for grading that I had bought in the eighties and nineties. Most came back cleaned. And I was not the one that did it. It was most likely the coin dealer I used at the time.
I LOVED your video on the toned seated quarter that you turned into a choice coin that anybody would get googly eyes for! Your laugh in the intro after you asked "did I mess it up? Well..." (then you laughed) It was CLASSIC!
You are absolutely spot on about photos being doctored to make a coin look better than it really is. Very good information about the Morgan's sir. Appreciate it. 👍
Best of Any!!! I thought I went through most if not all of your videos comparing Morgan and Peace dollars and how to point out cleaned coins and stuff and, I don’t know how I overlooked this one but I’m glad I found it now. This is the BEST video I’ve seen to help me compare my Morgan’s with those in the video and better understand what exactly to look for in cleaned coins. I will be looking at these first thing in the morning. Thanks. Did I tell you thank you? Well, I meant it. 😇🤗
Thanks...more GREAT information!! I've been buying and selling coins for decades and I still learn things from these videos. Best coin instructional videos I've ever seen.
I got into numismatics a long time ago when my grandfather gave me 1921 Peace dollar. It looked kind of dirty so I soaked it in lemon juice overnight. A few months later when I really started getting into the hobby I was really bummed out when I realized what I had done.
I think you did a great job describing cleaned coins. I do have a couple of comments though. NGC and PCGS clean coins. They call it conservation. If done properly cleaning a coin may be necessary. If your doing it to deceive for profit then that's obviously a negative. However, some coins, for instance, a proof like coin may have hazy fields. Well sometimes when dipped properly by a skilled professional like yourself Daniel know when a dip will give a coin a possibility at DMPL. So there are really two types of cleaning. Cleaning that's done for profit by altering the coins appearance. Then there is conservation to improve a coins appearance typically for a reason. I believe that 99.9% of all coin dealers have cleaned a coin. Some have cleaned thousands. It was done for profit. Again if done properly it can help a coin. The examples you showed definetly drove your point home. You talked about the negative side of cleaning/conservation and it's a shame. I just wanted to add another dimension to this video. Very well done Daniel.
Thank you sir for an excellent lesson. I recently took some Morgan's to a local dealer who spotted a fake before I handed it to him, I asked him how? He said that he'd seen a few over the years, lol, I was amazed and po'd at the same time I thought maybe it was cleaned. I guess the new collectors may run into this problem, but the simple fact is that he had nicer coins in BU than I could have bought on ebay for that year and more, food for thought. Your lessons are great!!
Look Daniel, I appreciate what you are doing and your obviously knowledgeable and I learn things from you. For 36 years I never wore gloves handling coin of course all of my coins have seen some sort of circulation even if very minute and still in MS grades, like contact marks and stuff. It's when I got into proof coins is where I really felt that gloves were necessary. I've seen some really nasty fingerprints on proof coins and feel like gloves are the best option as opposed to nothing at all with them. I will agree it's kind of unnecessary with all MS or lower coins but when it comes to PR coins I feel a finger or palm print on the mirrored field is problematic.
You just don't touch anything but the rim. If you're careful about not touching the coin then no fingerprints. If you're putting them in an album I can see using something to press them in. However, in the albums they're susceptible to getting issues. Also the people who handle enough proof to matter don't wear gloves. I don't and I have never ruined a proof.
Another great video Daniel! Now I know what to look for in Morgan Silver dollars and on other coins! The original frosty layer on the coins! Thank you Daniel for showing us the difference in the coins!
You are my favorite coin guy on UA-cam. You have a great knowledge, and you are the wealth of information for the little guy. You have helped me so much and I appreciate you. 🙌
Alright whoa I can see the difference between the 2 coins ! Cleaned Morgan’s I will definitely check from now on, these are my very favorites! I see that one to (fire) ! I found something new today! I love it CoinHelpU 👍🎈👍 Always interesting! Great information 🌈😎👍V
Man Daniel that made me look At my Morgan's right away To see if they have been cleaned (Safe) Here Well so far.. Thanks for the Share ! Have a Blessed Day..
An0ther great vedio an wow how easy it is to see a cleaned coin compared to a normal luster coin.Made it so simple to know the difference.Unless u get someone who angles it right so u can't see this when they show it on line.Atleast if u know who to buy from don't have to worry about that.Whitch I know it would be u.If don't see vedio before christmas,Merry Christmas Dan!
Subbed. Thanks for the help, very nice to see a great tutorial of what to look for, or what not to look for, ect.. Typically I just buy the morgans for weight, and if the price is right ($18-20), I'll purchase regardless of condition, depending on spot of course.. However, I'm infatuated with the 1881 morgans since that puts the coin exactly 100 years older than I am, so I'll buy those at $25+ish on ebay..
Well done! And, after reading the comments -- i am another fan of the 1881 Morgan. It's a great looking coin in a special year-date. Numerology meets numismatics!
Another excellent video! I appreciate you keeping to the facts and leaving the emotion out of it. I have a feeling some peoples' heads are exploding over your glove comments haha.
Good info, especially if stalking eBay deals, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,side note, if you have time in one of your videos to explain to everyone, I sent a 1953 d ddo to ngc, they deamed it to have been "Whizzed" and would not encapsulate it, so should they have encapsulated it and labeled it whizzed since it had been paid for, or, save themselves the time and money by simply sending it back in a flip labeled whizzed ? I have seen them both ways and like more and more the grading system you spoke of about four video's past, where every coin gets equal rights, If you have time, I know yall stay busy, Anyway enjoyed the video, ,,,,Keep em coming,
Great detailed information Daniel. Thanks for another enjoyable video. I can't wait for you to make the next one. Let's keep those likes coming people.
EXCELLENT Video, I think you need to be a very experienced coin collector, to really see a cleaned coin, It seems very difficult/easy to make a mistake when checking, anyway thank you Sir, Best Wishes from across the pond.
Great video Daniel 👍 don't let the thumbs down get to you bro they are called trolls. Also I don't wear gloves except when I handle proof coins.. Any true Numismatist uses bare hands and utilizes rim handling. I have found a few transitionals because they felt strange.. you can't feel a coins history through a glove.
Okay so finally somebody explains how you can spot cleaned versus original bu so what you're saying is when it's struck it makes the silver look different and once there's tarnish even if it's cleaned it'll never look the same as it did when it was brand new struck? But what about tarn-x dipping them won't they look original?
This is imperative information and I thank you for it - what I realllllly need is some examples of proof-like's that are cleaned vs normal ones - I've got an 1880-s in a NGC slab @ ms64-PL vs a 1878-s, 1881-s, 1885, and 1886 and 1897-s and I cannot tell the difference between them muuuuuch...but I got them from a reputable source that weren't cleaned to their knowledge. I see that your PL is pretty easy to see with the scrubbing lines but what about when you DON'T have the differential color from the fields? I probably should include pictures but I think we both have the same opinion of the internet and people's picture taking skills when it comes to coins - LOL ;). Anyhow - have you got any examples of non-obvious coins that are PL but are simply missing that extra die polish/differential in color - it's just far from cameo but still VERY PL infact the mirrors are DMPL but not dark except in a few especially as the dates get newer...? Help?
Great video. One question, I purchased lots of junk Morgan & Peace dollars on the run up to the last peak in 2011. All the coin dealers said don't clean them. I would say, well you are selling them to me as junk Morgans, and some were very dirty, so why is it that I can't clean them with say MS-70 just to get the grime off of them?
How can you tell if it's a toner? I have a 1900 and she's stunningly antique. No rainbowed or anything just a beautiful toned antique look. I was told it was probably cleaned but I see no signs of that, I posted her on a Toner Tuesday and I was told by a few people that she was the most gorgeous toner they ever saw.
Just sub'd...love the content...any chance of doing a capped bust half cleaning video...even when in hand its hard to tell if they have been cleaned sometimes...thanks and cheers!
I think its fair to say that a cleaned, uncirculated Morgan is the BIG DEAL here. Now, if it were a cleaned, heavily worn, almost good 1921 Morgan, then most would not get too worked up about it.
I have a 1881 1884 1878 1822 is a cc Carson City and I keep watching your video trying to study if they've been cleaned or not I'm 100% sure they have not I bought them at the pawn shop at the bottom of the hill 5 days ago Morgan silver dollars
I I am a smaller dealer but have sent probably 35 to 40 Morgan's into pcgs that I have dipped in silver cleaner from Walmart and all have been graded ms62 thru ms66 without any being designated as improperly cleaned. So I guess it depends on what chemicals are used. I know it is a crap shoot but so far there has been no problems.
Yes. You can properly cleaned Morgan Dollars and almost all dealers do it. It's when you use something not diluted with water and try to "whizz" out the contact marks is improper cleaning.
Unlike many, apparently you have control of your dilution, immersion dwell and technique. Congratulations! You are in the distinct minority compared to so many who clean without understanding and without proper controls.
Can you please tell me what the definition of cleaned means? Does that mean soap and water clean, does that mean baking soda and vinegar clean, or does that mean using some sort of mild acidic solution? Thanks in advance
What I’m unclear of is how many grades lower do u grade a coin if it’s been lightly dipped professionally? Also how many grades if scrubbed. I’m guessing 2 grades
I got a morgan dollar from an estate sale in arecipe tin box put it in a bag with other coin the plastic came off look like it got a raise by other coins in the bag I want to sell it will braise keep it from being sold?

Hey bud i got a question i was on ebay and there is a auction on a really good 1883 S it's not graded but to my eye's it looks like a 64 unc theres one day left and im the highest bid at 20 dollar's the seller got a positive feed back across the board but this coin looks like it should be selling in the hundred of dollar's. What do you think could it be a fake morgan.
You're never going to get an exact value on a cleaned coin so you have to make an educated guess based on what you can find. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1923+d+anacs+au+details&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1

No! Please don’t. Salt is abrasive and vinegar is an acid that will strip the top micro-layer.

Nope
I buy Morgan silver dollars as a hedge against inflation. I chose Morgans due to their beauty, intrinsic value, and concomitant recognizability. I am not attempting to collect a set and I routinely clean the ones I buy because I enjoy their brilliance.
