Provable evidence that bank wrapped Morgan Dollars rolls are bogus ua-cam.com/video/gWD_DoMOnM8/v-deo.html
I would never by Morgan's in rolls, I would rather go to a coin store or show and buy them individually. Great video Dan. 👍
Everytime you post a video to help collectors steer away from crooked sellers, I always hit the "like" button. Thank you.
I got into coin collecting about a year ago and I fell for this scam. I thought that it was rather odd that there was cc’s only on the end. As soon as I cracked it open and looked I knew that I’d been had. Thanks Daniel!
Me too. ONCE...I purchased an "unsearched roll of pennies from the 1950s" hoping to find an old wheat or indian. The roll had clearly been tampered. NOTHING on ebay is unsearched.
I would guess most all of us have made this mistake in the hobby. In one way or another I don’t think you can be in this hobby and not have at some point made a bad judgement call on a purchase.
I’m glad you did this.... it’s been long overdue.
I’m familiar with two different sellers who use crimping devises and remaindered unused bank wrappers to create these ‘rolls’.
Believe it or not, it used to be much worse.... back in 2010-2014, these rolls would sell for $7500++, in some cases over $10K!
It’s the biggest scam in all of numismatics. The insult to injury is the fact that not only does eBay allow it to happen, they actually protect these sellers!
Original rolls of silver dollars do indeed exist, but they’re few and far between and they look nothing like these fantasy rolls that are being peddled on eBay.
lol the one thumbs down is the guy selling them.thanks for the info.
I've been told from several people in their seventies and eighties that many nickel, dime, and quarter rolls that their parents got at banks in the 1940's and 50's were actually manually hand wrapped in flat tubular coin wrappers and not machine wrapped and crimped.
Priceless lnfo. I think some internet shoppers need to do research before clicking buy. Great info, once again you raise the bar for integrity! Thank you!
Go to a Local Dealer. There are Tons out there. What i do. I Stack Junk Morgan and peace dollars.
When I Need them It will Be Easier to spend instead of bars.
I've not bought any of these, I'm suspicious of all rolled coins off the internet.
I usually do good with quarter rolls, pennies, nickels I look for U.S. Mint Roll wrapper or regular bank wrapper and look at the ends. Those are usually safe bets also sometimes they say free returns on some of them. This is on eBay I have got some of them in plastic tubes MS 70 to ms 64 I have not verified most of them yet but just my best guess with a loupe and grading books. But the U.S. Mint wrappers is a 100% safe they are all ms70 to 68. The nf string wrappers and the other major one which the name escapes me now is good to just as long as they show the picture of both ends they are the Uncircllated rolls a few times I see someone trying to sell the circulated rolls I just do not buy those.
Two out of three numismatic videos focus on how to avoid getting scammed or else ripped off.
Again, daniel has hit the nail on the head. These seller's are taking advantage of the new coin collector's and scarring the hobby Always research and ask questions when buying coins over a certain amount. I would recommend asking questions right on this UA-cam page. Scribe, daniel has the knowledge and dedication to the hobby.
Any body else try to 'scroll' his screen while watching?
Exactly. Morgan Dollars were bagged not rolled. Even into the 1960’s banks transported silver dollars in bags. My dad used to go in with others on the bags. Scammers never stop. As always, education is priceless.
I didn't know about the revised feedback on eBay. Thanks for the info. Great stuff you are sharing!
I hate that things like this have to be explained but THANK YOU for taking the time to shed light on dishonest sellers through your videos.
EXPOSE THESE SCAMMERS!
You always have such great content. Favorite UA-cam channel by far! Thank you for everything you do on here and FB.
Never buy rolls of coins on eBay because you don't know what is on the inside of the roll!
EXACTLY RON. And ANYONE claiming rolls are GUARANTEED UNSEARCHED
IS A FLAT OUT LIAR AND A SCAMMER because how would they know otherwise?
BASIC LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE GOES A LONG WAY IN THIS HOBBY!
I also fell for the “Unsearched” scam and “Old Bank Rolls” BS with some Pennies I bought for like 15$ a roll. I got JUNK and now ima Not do That anymore. I really appreciate your Awesome knowledge and REAL WORLD reasoning with these vids. They’re By FAR the Best on YT. Youz a bad A$$ Dan!
Stored in bags, hence bag-marks... not in rolls.
Absolutely love all the viable information you provide for me as a beginner great things to know about !!!
Nice that you've highlighted this!! I've seen these so many times and was shocked by the prices that they have sold for! Such unscrupulous sellers!!
Many buyers are jumping in the metals market with little to no real knowledge. When they go to sell is when they will get their first class on numismatics.
I think this applies to all coin rolls on ebay.
I can see the poor bastard who bought one of the rolls that were shown on here watching this video😭😭😭😭
I once bought a rolled AU mercury dime roll for $129. on E-Bay all dimes were supposedly AU or better.....so i took a gamble. What i got was 48 coins VF and 2 XF coins not a single AU coin in the lot...and 45 of them were from the 1940's...3 from the mid late 30's and 1 from the teens.
I immediately wrote up a NEW LISTING on E-Bay stating i bought this roll of AU mercs...and told them what i found VF and XF and the price i paid....and then listed it at auction for 7 days....sold (re-sold) for $65.00. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!
Ouch
omg
Thanks Dan, again your channel igs awesome for beginner collectors like me, I did buy a roll of these Morgan's in the past and they were just ok enough to not require negative feedback, I got a 63PL on one that I thought should've addy least been a 65... and a common cc, but most were BU's...60-64... thanks again for still you do...
I really started to buy one of those rolls and talked myself out of it! Thanks for these videos!
Any time!
You’re not wrong. I’ve bought A LOT of these over the last year. I caught on to the grift quickly. However I will say there are a couple good sellers of them. But you’ve gotta wait for the deal and need to know what to look for. I’ve lost on a few but won on a few too. Never any 89 CC or anything like that but some really good condition and top Vams. And don’t look for a quick turn around. The prices they went for a couple years ago is much higher today. Long term investment is how to look at it.
I was tempted but you set me straight. Thank you Dan 🙏
It would be cool if someone did some videos buying these rolls and exposing the sellers.
There are some on UA-cam
I still have yet to hear of ANYONE on ebay buying one of these Morgan Dollar rolls and they just HAPPEN to find inside the roll a high grade 1884 s or 1883 s or an 1896 o or any that are rare STRICTLY BY CONDITION. And NO ONE WILL EITHER. WHAT A RIP OFF! These scammers know what they're doing! GREAT VIDEO DAN! SUBSCRIBED!
Great information. Thank You
Glad someone finally made a video on these coin roll ebay scams, good stuff!
Great video! Thanks for this information.
Great video, I was always amazed at how people would throw so much money at these rolls.
Excellent advice. You are the best coin dealer on UA-cam.
THE BEST! 😁
I think he has the most integrity that I've seen
I wish he was a two hour drive from me I would gladly buy and sell to him.
Christopher Simpson that's about the distance h is f I'm me ,iv been thinking when i go to invest i might make that trip... Cincinnati here
It would be worth it.
Someone referenced this video on Reddit. Glad I saw it. Thanks!
GOOD BUDDY DANIEL KEEPING THEM HONEST. THANK YOU.
I can vouch for your knowledge of Morgans, Daniel, and coins in general! I wonder how many know what it neans to "salt a mine" with a shotgun?😀
Spray some gold in the mine? Make it look like it has a lot of gold? I’ve never heard of that just putting 2 and 2 together here lol.
Thank you for this information
As I have said before I would NEVER buy ANY coins on a bid site (or WISH). I want to HOLD THE COIN IN MY HAND. Thanks for educating the community.
Best bet is to get your rolls from the bank. I happened upon someone’s Lincoln cent collection in a $25 box, FULL rolls of wheats, etc. now they’re my collection for I’m super happy they found a good home!
thanks,,,,,ive looked at these many times and have bid on a few but never bought ,always out bid,,,thanks again
Great video Daniel. Its easy for sellers on eBay to get their negative feedback removed. I have seen it many times. Thanks for sharing my friend.
I dont collect Morgans but recently I noticed an auction of similar rolls and this seller had a ton of them.. not knowing about the 1000 bag comment you made- I thought the rolls looked ancient and figured someone found a horde- glad those were out of my range and scope- great info once again- keep telling folks about these scammers Daniel!
Yup... I was a victim of a purchased EBay Morgan roll...all were cleaned and all common dates...Roll was returned to seller and full refund...Do not shop for coins on EBay...Bad head trip...thx for this one...
awesome info, thanks for making this video
Great channel......love these videos........could you do a video on platinum eagles.......I think it could be a good time to buy.
A must view for all collectors.
Thanks for more great info
Great video and explanation of how to figure out what you pay per coin for the 18 coins in the middle. Luckily I've always avoided these rolls
Daniel, just wanted to say I appreciate your channel. You're doing a great job. These scams need to be exposed for what they are. Maybe you could share your thoughts on all of these UA-cam channels who just happen to find gold and silver all over the place. There are some pretty disgraceful videos out there regarding the subject. I'd be happy to name said scammers if you would like. Take care buddy!
Fantastic video...I sell antique items on eBay. So many scams
going on. Through this you are teaching people how to really
deal on eBay. Thank you.
Great Information Daniel and as you said Anyone can put any coin on the End of the rolls to get a sale.
I know to only buy morgans from you Daniel. Have a happy, healthy and blessed Thanksgiving to you and your family and everyone in the store!
If someone has a roll with a CC at the end there's a really good chance that is going to be the only CC in the roll so if you are going to buy something like that take that into consideration when bidding or buying one also if you're considering about trying to buy or win one in auction don't bid or pay really high because the more you get into a bidding war the more money you will most likely lose
The only coins I buy in rolls are pennies in $25 boxes. I do it every now and then because it’s fun. I go through every roll and keep all the pre 1982 pennies. It’s getting to where only about 1 in 10 pennies is a pre 82. All the other zinc pennies I take back and run it through my credit unions coin machine. I figure pre 82 pennies are the only place you can buy a precious metal for about half price.
Thanks Dan, I only bought 20 each rolls didn’t loose any money and would no make anything big. I bid on the coins.
Will never bid again.
Great video Dan,thank you. My gut feeling was that these were rip-offs, you proved it! Well done, Sir.
Totally agree, good points made here...
Agree, been collecting since 1956 and dealing since 1990.
I like your analogy to doctored lottery tickets.
0:39 woo hoo! Thanks for the great video Daniel ❤️
Never seen these rolls for sale at coin shops or coin shows. Ebay is the only place I have ever seen them for sell.
Great information. I try to stay away from Morgan’s, so much counterfeiting going on. Thanks for Sharing my friend
eBay legit sellers live/die by feedback. I recently purchased @25 Morgans, 6 were Carsons. I have checked with a scale, a loupe, magnet, and sound test. ALL ARE AUTHENTIC.
The counterfeiting is going to be confined to Key dates. Many have been graded, but they can counterfeit slabs now.
Yeah I bought one of these a mo th ago Good thing is I only paid $600 for 20 Morgan's Over half we're in good shape and about 4 of them were damaged. I won't ever buy any more though
Barry Chappel use to sell the rolled Morgans on his TV coin show.
All the rolled coins already searched through
Thanks for the video....
Another thing about Ebay, for the most part is coins are marked "Gem BU" I buy them if they are low enough expecting they will come back ms62 or 63, maybe 64 occasionally. However, I never buy rolls, I buy individual coins. With the NGC thing you spoke about a while back, you can send the listing to NGC and for a fee they will give you an idea of what it will grade out as, and if you actually send it for grading, they will subtract that amount from the total grading fees. Thanks for another great video. I saw some of these rolls a while back. The good thing for me is they are something that are out of my price range for something to buy at a single time. More people need to learn about this kind of thing.
For the feedback that say great stuff about them, they could just have an employee of their business buy the rolls with money they are given and just leave positive feed back and maybe get paid a little bit for doing it.
$20 dollar rolls were avaiable at banks until about 1963. I searched many of those when I was young. I never came across a crimped roll. These rolls did not come from the Mint. Never found a CC or seated or trade$. Most of the key and semi-key dates were long gone by the time I started to collect back in 1958.
I complain about that canyon City company and I was able to return my unopened rolls but it's all common date crap, then they blocked me from bidding on their PCGS graded coins. Now I only buy the expensive stuff like proof Morgan's that are over $5,000
Daniel i feel like such a fool i paided 1125 for a roll in 2017. There was one 1884 cc unc the rest where all common dates some au some unc. They did offer to refund my money but i felt since i opened the roll i was obligated to keep them. Because i have integrity. thanks joe
This is like buying one of those $1000 buckets of dirt that guarantees that if you sift it and pan it you'll find at least 15 grams of the shiny stuff, lol.
really interesting, I do love Morgan silver dollars
Awesome vid
Thank you
thank you very much
The seller's friends buy them to leave exceptional feedback....and then the seller pays back the friends money...and relists. Here's how much 20 morgan roll with CC and great date morgans ends are really worth in my opinion. ...$850. to 900. nominally.....all those rolls should be selling for $700. to $1,100. Nothing over $1,200. there.
Agreed. They look nice but, you are way better off going to your LCS and picking nice coins yourself.
Oh, now you tell me. CC's both ends rest were bu but all common dates each with a mark. After the silver market explodes I'll break even.
Thanks I was thinking of buying one
Bad idea
I've only bought 2 rolls & they were just "ok" but as you say not as "great" as was advertised. In fact the second roll I bought had what I consider to be AU grade coins & one of them was stamped into the coin "Standard Oil Co." which I'll assume literally destroyed any value to the coin. NEVER AGAIN! "They" clipped me twice but NEVER a third time!
Speaking of coins... A guy walked into my lcs and bought 50 Morgan's and peace dollars... For $18 a peice mostly "culled ones" but to me they were awesome looking. And people paying $7 a roll for wheaties on Ebay. I fell for it once. Then went to lcs and paid $2 a roll... lol
Any time you see this kind of stuff you know the rolls were put together to look good but you know it's garbage. How would it be that there's so many of the high end coins on the end of the roll? Everything is fake. They do it with Lincoln pennies. All the "unsearched" are salted. Would never even consider buying any of that unknown stuff.
Thanks Daniel I bought a Mcarthur ngc ms 65 peso instead👍
I’m gonna start selling “sealed” rolls to up my silver and gold holdings.
One thing I wonder is where are these guys getting all these Morgan’s? They sell 10-20 rolls every day. They must have hordes of them.
Buying rolled Morgan’s is the high priced equivalent of a mystery bag. Never worth what paid.
Ya I’ve never understood why someone would sell a roll of BU Morgans and not open it. Seems like if it was a legit bank wrapped roll from 100 years ago people would open them right away to see what was inside. No way someone is going to knowingly sell you a potential rare Morgan without even looking at all of them.
If it sounds to good to be true it is. I have one CC,$250, there are some Morgans I will just never own unless I trip over it. When I was a kid we went to Carson City and one of the old time casinos had a giant portrait of a woman in a dress all made from CC silver dollars, around 1974, atl least 10x5, what’s that picture worth, lol. I’d buy generic tubes before speculating on these Morgan rolls, the odds would be better for a win fall. Good advice.
As a commercial product the paper coin roll wrapper didn't exist until the 20th century, but paper existed before that time and it would not be impossible for someone to have wrapped rolls of coins in paper. Of course these paper rolls would not be marked in any particular way and would just be folded over at the ends, not rolled at the ends like the ones we see today. Matthew Boulton in England were shipping the coins and tokens that he produced wrapped in paper rolls back in the 1790s.
MERRY CHRISTMAS DANIEL.
Merry Christmas
Thank you Daniel I glad you brought this up you just helped me dodge this bullet. I was planning on buying one of those rolls I am not going to now. I was skeptical of them anyway I had it on the back burner I been having to take care of other priorities right now. But I do drop a lot of money on coins every month. Some people have drug and alcohol problems I have a Coin addiction. The great thing about coins I will get money back when I cash them in when I'm get close to my retirement years. Although I am planning on cashing in some soon to help buy a house but have to send of to get graded first.
Wait until you see my video tomorrow. I have 100% proof these rolls are made up.
Oh boy I been suspecting this. Those stinking Pirate's.
Yep watching your video right now.
I garrentee the CC ender is an 1881,82,or83!
Even IF there could be other key coins in the roll.. what is their condition? What is the condition of the coins on the ends: at least, the sides and edges that you can't see? Are there excessive marks and gouges? You can't tell. Even the enders could be problem coins.
I recognize the Ebay seller....shady....when I first started collecting I didnt really know much....that seller (if its initials are CCC) likes to sell polished and cleaned coins. Generic copy and paste responses when you message them.
You opened my eyes to how prevalent counterfeiting is Daniel, if I want Morgans I'll buy them from you or local reputable places where I live.
Morgan rolls have gotten a lot more expensive lately. I bought several “UNC” rolls a few years ago for 6-700 dollars and got many great coins for my Dansco set that I’m working on.
