  • This is how you actually can get to C2 level German. German is a difficult language to learn, and to get around native German speakers, you need to be at C-level (C1 / C2 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) = Europäischer Referenzrahmen).
    This is how I learned English (and how you can learn German fast)
    0:00 Intro
    0:41 Proficiency level required for understanding advanced German media
    1.28 How to get to B2 (which you have to master first, yes you do!)

    2:48 Why I prefer "compact books" to study languages
    3:46 An app is not enough
    4:21 Find the right "studying style"
    5:11 Language learning can be boring but this helps
    6:18 How I study languages
    6:53 "Learner types" in language studies??
    Learn German super fast with these no BS language learning tips. These come from my heart, and I would not tell you something that didn't work for me, as I learn my languages (Swedish, French, Chinese). I managed to get to C level English basically effortless though, because I guess I am just a language nerd. I am however also super lazy and I hate actively studying a language. So as a lazy language learner, these are the things I do to stay lazy and not work night shifts just to acquire a language. I do think that it doesn't have to be that way. But you just have to get to B2 somehow. That indeed is the magic trick. And it requires routine and discipline. Maybe that sounds basic, I don't know... but that's the truth. Everyone else telling you otherwise, I recommend you pay close attention to whether they are trying to sell you something. Cause if they tell you you can only learn a language through some course, then that may serve them more than it will you as an auto-didactic German learner. My channel is tailored towards autodidacts. I gain nothing from this. This channel is my pet project if you will (which is also the reason I don't post a lot). Do with that information what you will. Either way: happy studying!
    I make videos about German language, German grammar and German culture. So if you are looking for these kinds of things-hi! Welcome. Most of the upcoming videos are made for beginners like you. Advanced videos (slow German, conversational german) will follow soon.
    German language & grammar tips

    This is my German language project. I just always wanted to do something like this. My main channel (mostly about minimalism and hiking) and my socials can be found below ↓↓↓ I don't really have a page for this project like a learning platform or anything, but if you have questions, you can contact me on Instagram, on TikTok (also German language & culture content) or in the comment section of course.

    I found that once you crack into a foreign language and can hold a conversation, additional foreign languages come easier. I had a summer internship with a french company and left thinking in French. Later in life, I had a job with a german company which didn't require me to speak german, but german was unavoidable with people all around me speaking german. skills from french helped my direction in learning german. One technique thatnis fun is to learn foreign songs and understand their meaning. German weihnachtslieder are fun and present skill in timing, pronunciation and grammar. Not always perfectly due to having to fit a melody but it gets in your head. Most americans my age learned "Frere Jaques" and many learned "Schnitzelbank". There are the Oktoberfest songs. It is more fun to learn and sing them than to sit stupidly and listen. As for Christmas, my favorite is the kinderlied, "In der weihnachts Backerei".

    Language classes in school are so lifeless and boring, I think we develop this expectation that that's how learning a new language has to be. But it can be a really fun journey if you find resources that are exciting and interesting to you. And 100% agree that variety another key maintaining that motivation.

      I had both boring and enticing ones, can't really pick a side there... but that was in uni too... school, yes, you wrote school. Oh boy, language learning in school was 80% useless and 20% coincidental/accidental picking up of phrases, and then some studying to not fail XD ... To this day I can't understand how they got me, as a highly motivated autodidact who would spend her summer break studying for fun(!), to hate language classes and think I sucked at it... (But looking at my old books now, partially at least, I can feel why it didn't work for me, the medium, the teachers, just everything was so far away from life...)

    I am now going from A2 to B1 in German. I can probably understand about 70% or maybe more now reading and listening.
    When you were learning English did you ever try to understand the Australian or New Zealand accents?

    • @LearnGermanorcrytrying
      @LearnGermanorcrytrying  Місяць тому

      I tried understanding BE for the longest time and it was super hard. I watched "Black Books" with Dylan Moran and Harry Potter, it was undoable without subtitles. Then I took a break from English, as I literally thought it was a lost cause. That was about 2-3 years, from 19 to 21 or 22 y.o. I guess. Then I watched Grey's Anatomy, which is when I got from A2 to C1 basically in a few months. I did that in 2 months, but I don't want to give unrealistic expectations to my audience, since I am totally insane for doing this the way I did and don't recommend it. I refined my language to get to C2 then for about half a year (overall). My kid had New Zealandic nannies, and I do understand it, as it seems quite a clean dialect. I don't mind any dialects at this point. The only ones I have a hard time understanding is Frenglish and Denglish. And I find Irish people hard to understand when they talk in English, but it is doable with a bit of concentration. American English imo is by far the easiest. One key I had to understanding it was HD audio. I used to stream these series back then and I always thought I had shitty listening comprehension. But it turned out the quality of the audio was just very low. Eventually, I came across some HD server (totally legal...) and streamed that and it felt like putting on glasses for the first time... so, if you want to simulate a steep learning curve, fake shitty audio I guess XD

    How did you learn English like that in 6 months? Did you go to an English-speaking country? I understand your educational background and how you obtained the basics (same as me) but to speak as well as you do is amazing. I have studied Spanish, French, and German and cannot speak as well as you do in English. Hours per day? Listening to podcasts and movies? Conversation tutor? I’m going to do all that you suggest to improve in general. There is a huge difference between basic sentences and what you have accomplished with conventional skill level. Thx for a great video.

      The core vocabulary took me 2 months. It was basically just binge watching. I was a nurse at the time and so I had a looooot of time to waste. Like after work... 😅 And I just watched Grey's Anatomy and Black Books. I didn't understand shit for 3 seasons, then I found some better streaming server and suddenly it was possible to watch this stuff in HD. That made it much easier to understand. But I guess the secret kicker was talking to myself on English for fun... I never went to an English speaking country in my life and in my everyday life apart from work I only ever use it for UA-cam. Maybe I should do another video on this...

      There are many ways to learn english pretty fast. Although, learning something fast doesnt mean you have a good understanding of it. In fact, many people struggle quite a lot when they started advanced level since they take the language directly instead of taking it more poetically or ironic. Knowledge can be speed up but taking breaks might be better. In my case, I learned grammar first and then started with the vocabulary. Then after grasping the language, you could start thinking whether ur accent is British or American. I will say accents are pretty easy to learn but might take time to apply it everyday. Lastly, the biggest struggle in english. Pronunciation. Pronunciation might take many years, but many, I haven't seen people, who claim to have learned an advanced levek, to speak with the perfect Pronunciation. British people might struggle less but it is so pleasant when you can speak perfectly. It's so rewarding. Another tip would be talking to yourself and learning random words and guess their Pronunciation. You can learn the words, but the key is to have that muscle memory even if the word has an irregular pronunciation. Those cases need to be kept in mind.

    Bilingual books can be good. What do you think? Any advice?

    • @LearnGermanorcrytrying
      @LearnGermanorcrytrying  Місяць тому

      Maybe... I only did that with Latin books and actually found it useful. The German publisher Reclam has a series of those, but I am not sure how many are in English/German... and how interesting they are. E.g. amzn.to/3y5mQjs (Affiliate Link). Do you know any good ones? I really usually read the normal books or short story books for language learners, because it forces you to rely on your brain only to understand the text. But it also requires a good text that really allows you to understand what the words you are missing mean from the context alone...

      Is good somewhat.
      Still prefer graded readers and just lookup the word that I don’t know.
      I suggest you to take a look in tools like readlang, you can translate one word just by clicking it, and it will add automatically to your flashcards list for review, if you want to do them later.

    I've never come across a task so humungous as to learn German in a short amount of time, so that I can become a basic part of this society and finally feel like a normal human being, who could exchange a few words with the Kassierer and say hello to strangers without feeling awkward and write a job application in German that actually gets a reply.
    Man kann es nicht genug betonen, bedeutung auf deine Arbeit. Die Herausforderung fur Auslander ist wirklich gross. Ich stehe irgendwo zwischen A2-B1, aber mache ich zu viel Fehler und fuhle mich peinlich auf Deutsch zu kommunisieren. Hoffe es wird besser.
